Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are cell surface glycoproteins mediating interactions of cells with other cells and the extracellular matrix. By mediating the adhesion and modulating activity of other plasma membrane proteins, CAMs are involved in regulating a multitude of cellular processes, including growth, proliferation, migration, and survival of cells. In this review, we present evidence showing that various CAMs interact with the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a receptor tyrosine kinase inducing pro-proliferative and anti-apoptotic intracellular signaling in response to binding to several soluble ligands, including the epidermal growth factor.

Purpose: This study assesses the impact of preoperative administration of Oku-Oku eye drops on the severity of conjunctival hyperemia and the risk of hemorrhagic complications in the early postoperative period following glaucoma surgery.

Material And Methods: The study included a group of 30 patients (30 eyes) with uncontrolled primary open-angle glaucoma who underwent non-penetrating deep sclerectomy. The main group included 15 eyes, in which Oku-Oku drops were administered twice - on the day before surgery (upon hospital admission) and immediately before the operation.

Article Synopsis
  • Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a serious global infection that can be fatal to horses, with this study focusing on its presence in Siberia, Russia, where data was previously lacking.
  • Blood samples from 750 horses across three regions in Siberia revealed that Theileria equi was present in 60.4% and Babesia caballi in 7.2% of the samples, indicating a significant prevalence of these pathogens.
  • Genetic analysis showed T. equi was mainly of two genotypes, while B. caballi exhibited high genetic diversity with seven variants found, leading to the identification of new genetic clusters that have broadened existing knowledge about this pathogen's diversity.

Tricalcium silicate (CS) as a binder material has a decisive influence on the processes of hardening and strength gain of cements and concretes. One of the promising directions is the introduction of dispersed additives into cement mixtures, which allow micro-level control of the composition of hydration products and change the dynamics of the structure formation of cement stone. In this paper, the effect of a microdisperse ettringite additive on the kinetics of the hydration and hardening process of tricalcium silicate was studied.

The development of modern building materials science involves the process of designing innovative materials that exhibit unique characteristics, such as energy efficiency, environmental friendliness, self-healing ability, and photocatalytic properties. This can be achieved by modifying cement with nano- and fine-dispersed additives that can give the material new properties. Such additives include a number of compounds based on the TiO-BiO system.

, formerly tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), belongs to the genus. TBEV is transmitted by tick bites and infection with TBEV can lead to serious disorders of the central nervous system. In this study, a new protective monoclonal mouse antibody (mAb) FVN-32, with high binding activity to glycoprotein E of TBEV, was selected and examined in post exposure prophylaxis in a mouse model of TBEV infection.

Glaucoma is one of the most difficult and significant ocular conditions. The chronic asymptomatic course of glaucoma progression leads to irreversible deterioration of visual functions. Many aspects of its pathogenesis, the features of its clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment have been identified in recent years.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a flavivirus which causes an acute or sometimes chronic infection that frequently has severe neurological consequences, and is a major public health threat in Eurasia. TBEV is genetically classified into three distinct subtypes; however, at least one group of isolates, the Baikal subtype, also referred to as "886-84-like", challenges this classification. Baikal TBEV is a persistent group which has been repeatedly isolated from ticks and small mammals in the Buryat Republic, Irkutsk and Trans-Baikal regions of Russia for several decades.

In the present study, we show that the inhibitor of the apoptosis-stimulating protein of p53 (iASPP) physically interacts with the hyaluronan receptor CD44 in normal and transformed cells. We noticed that the CD44 standard isoform (CD44s), but not the variant isoform (CD44v), bound to iASPP via the ankyrin-binding domain in CD44s. The formation of iASPP-CD44s complexes was promoted by hyaluronan stimulation in fibroblasts but not in epithelial cells.

Purpose: Comparison of the hypotensive effects of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and drug therapy in patients with newly diagnosed primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and ocular hypertension.

Material And Methods: Thirty patients (30 eyes) with newly diagnosed ophthalmic hypertension or POAG were observed. Patients of the 1st group (15 eyes) underwent standard SLT as a starting treatment, patients of the 2nd group (15 eyes) were prescribed monotherapy with a prostaglandin analog.

Beta-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1), also known as β-secretase, is an aspartic protease. The sorting of this enzyme into Rab11-positive recycling endosomes regulates the BACE1-mediated cleavage of its substrates, however, the mechanisms underlying this targeting remain poorly understood. The neural cell adhesion molecule 2 (NCAM2) is a substrate of BACE1.

The tick-borne flavivirus (TBFV) group contains at least 12 members where five of them are important pathogens of humans inducing diseases with varying severity (from mild fever forms to acute encephalitis). The taxonomy structure of TBFV is not fully clarified at present. In particular, there is a number of paraphyletic issues of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and louping-ill virus (LIV).

Unlabelled: Intraocular pressure is the one modifiable factor, which correct assessment and normalization initiates the treatment of glaucoma. The accuracy of its measurement by traditional methods depends on biomechanical properties of the fibrous tunic of the eye, which in modern clinical practice are most successfully studied by the method of bidirectional applanation of the cornea using the Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA). Mathematical integration of the parameters it measures makes it possible to calculate the coefficient of biomechanical stress (K) that characterizes changes in the fibrous tunic of the eye induced by intraocular pressure, and serves as a criterion for intraocular pressure compensation.

Background & Aims: Golexanolone is a novel small molecule GABA-A receptor-modulating steroid antagonist under development for the treatment of cognitive and vigilance disorders caused by allosteric over-activation of GABA-A receptors by neurosteroids. It restored spatial learning and motor coordination in animal models of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and mitigated the effects of intravenous allopregnanolone in healthy adults in a dose-dependent fashion. Herein, we report data on the safety, pharmacokinetics (PK) and efficacy of golexanolone in adult patients with cirrhosis.

Cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) mediate interactions of neurons with the extracellular environment by forming adhesive bonds with CAMs on adjacent membranes or binding to proteins of the extracellular matrix. Binding of CAMs to their extracellular ligands results in the activation of intracellular signaling cascades, leading to changes in neuronal structure and the molecular composition and function of neuronal contacts. Ultimately, many of these changes depend on the synthesis of new proteins.

The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), a member of the Flaviviridae family, is currently subdivided into three main subtypes-the European (TBEV-Eu), the Far-Eastern (TBEV-FE), and the Siberian (TBEV-Sib). The TBEV-Sib is the most common subtype and found in all regions where TBEV was detected, except for Central and Western Europe. Currently, four genetic lineages have been described within TBEV-Sib.

Cataract is one of the common causes of reversible vision loss in people older than 50 years. Currently, the only way to treat it effectively is phacoemulsification with simultaneous implantation of an intraocular lens - a method that minimizes the amount of surgical trauma and the number of intra- and postoperative complications. Nevertheless, the problem of prevention and timely diagnosis of pathological changes in the retina, which may develop after extraction of cataracts, and in particular - macular edema, remains relevant.
