NPJ Biofilms Microbiomes
January 2025
Biofilms are critical for understanding environmental processes, developing biotechnology applications, and progressing in medical treatments of various infections. Nowadays, a key limiting factor for biofilm analysis is the difficulty in obtaining large datasets with fully annotated images. This study introduces a versatile approach for creating synthetic datasets of annotated biofilm images with employing deep generative modeling techniques, including VAEs, GANs, diffusion models, and CycleGAN.

The chickpea plays a significant role in global agriculture and occupies an increasing share in the human diet. The main aim of the research was to develop a model for the prediction of two chickpea productivity traits in the available dataset. Genomic data for accessions were encoded in Artificial Image Objects, and a model for the thousand-seed weight (TSW) and number of seeds per plant (SNpP) prediction was constructed using a Convolutional Neural Network, dictionary learning and sparse coding for feature extraction, and extreme gradient boosting for regression.

Due to the similarity of the symptoms of cerebral malperfusion in TAAD and the signs of ischemic stroke, a differential diagnosis of these diseases is not always available. Patients with TAAD after cerebral malperfusion can have a neurological deficit.

Aim: To study the clinical features of the new COVID-19 in patients with mild and moderate severity at the stage of hospitalization, to determine the role of hepatobiliary injury, intestinal permeability disorders, and changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of the microbiota in the development of systemic inflammation in patients with COVID-19.
Methods: The study was performed in 80 patients with COVID-19, with an average age of 45 years, 19 of whom had mild disease, and 61 had moderate disease severity.
Earlier studies aimed at investigating the metabolism of endogenous nucleoside triphosphates in synchronous cultures of cells revealed an auto-oscillatory mode of functioning of the pyrimidine and purine nucleotide biosynthesis system, which the authors associated with the dynamics of cell division. Theoretically, this system has an intrinsic oscillatory potential, since the dynamics of its functioning are controlled through feedback mechanisms. The question of whether the nucleotide biosynthesis system has its own oscillatory circuit is still open.

Their maintenance in culture requires the deep control of their pluripotent and clonal status. A non-invasive method for such control involves day-to-day observation of the morphological changes, along with imaging colonies, with the subsequent automatic assessment of colony phenotype using image analysis by machine learning methods.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) and a mild inflammatory response characteristic of senescent cells (inflammaging) form the conditions for the development of cardiovascular diseases: atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and myocardial infarction. The purpose of the review is to analyze the pool of signaling molecules that form SASP and inflammaging in cells of the cardiovascular system and to search for targets for the action of vasoprotective peptides. The SASP of cells of the cardiovascular system is characterized by a change in the synthesis of anti-proliferative proteins (p16, p19, p21, p38, p53), cytokines characteristic of inflammaging (IL-1α,β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-18, TNFα, TGFβ1, NF-κB, MCP), matrix metalloproteinases, adhesion molecules, and sirtuins.

In this work, a new approach is proposed in which the SNP markers influencing time to flowering in mung bean are selected as important features in a random forest model. The genotypic and weather data are encoded in artificial image objects, and a model for flowering time prediction is constructed as a convolutional neural network.

A regulation possibility of the concentration heterogeneity and austenite thermal expansion coefficient resulted from the polymorphous transformation α→γ was shown.

The aging-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) is a heterogeneous phenotype of cells secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines, growth factors, apoptosis' regulatory molecules, and proteases. SASP is one of the three main hallmarks of senescent cells. Dysregulation of the synthesis of SASP-forming molecules leads to the development of age-associated diseases, including cardiovascular pathology.

Identification of the causes, as well as the development of a methodology for predicting survival by minimally invasive methods, is relevant. The aim of the study was to study the markers of tight junctions in the buccal epithelium (BE) in people of different ages.

The traditional method of treating severe aortic valve stenosis is open surgery to replace aortic valve. At the same time, a more modern, minimally invasive method of correcting aortic stenosis is transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).

Although it is one of the most powerful methods for individual compound detection, complete signal assignment in complex mixtures is still a great challenge. The unconstrained formula-generating algorithm, covering the entire spectra and revealing components, is a "dream tool" for researchers.

For mechanical alloying, mixtures of iron alloys doped with transition metals (Ni, Cr, Mn, and Ti) and nitrides with low stability to deformation (CrN and MnN) were used. The correlation between the phase-concentration composition of the mechanically synthesized samples and the heat of formation of transition metal nitrides, which are part of the initial metal mixtures, is investigated.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) represents a real revolution in the field of interventional cardiology for the treatment of elderly or high-risk patients with severe symptomatic AV stenosis. TAVI allows for the correction of aortic defect in the most severe group of patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) with severe comorbidity, who are contraindicated for open surgery to replace AV, in order to interrupt the vicious circle in the progression of CHF, stimulate reverse myocardial remodeling, alleviate symptoms, improve the quality of life, and prognosis of patients, and also as a «bridge» to heart transplantation.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA narrow temperature range of changes in the mechanism and kinetics of structural-phase transformations during mechanical alloying under deformation in rotating Bridgman anvils was determined by the methods of Mössbauer spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and mechanical tests in the high-nitrogen chromium-manganese steel FeMnCrN. The experimentally established temperature region is characterized by a change in the direction of nitrogen redistribution-from an increase in the N content in the metal matrix during cold deformation to a decrease with an increase in the temperature and degree of severe plastic deformation. The change in the direction of nitrogen redistribution is due to the acceleration of the decomposition of a nitrogen-supersaturated solid solution of austenite with the formation of secondary nanocrystalline nitrides.
