Fetal immune cell functions during congenital infections are poorly understood. Zika virus (ZIKV) can vertically transmit from mother to fetus, causing nervous system infection and congenital ZIKV syndrome (CZS). We identified differential functional roles for fetal monocyte/macrophage cell types and microglia in ZIKV dissemination versus clearance using mouse models.

However, screw loosening is a prevalent complication, particularly in patients with osteoporosis. Various biomechanical studies have sought to address this issue, but the optimal depth and trajectory to increase the fixation strength of pedicle screws remain controversial.

This study aimed to assess the accuracy of ultrasonography as an alternative diagnostic tool for PSEH after microendoscopic laminotomy (MEL) for lumbar spinal stenosis, comparing it with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Methods: A total of 65 patients who underwent MEL were evaluated using both ultrasound- and MRI-based classifications for PSEH.

Bright light impacts the human circadian system such that exposure to bright light at night can suppress melatonin secretion, and exposure to bright light in the morning prevents light-induced melatonin suppression at night. The preventive effect of morning light may attenuate the prior history of light sensitivity of intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) that regulate the circadian system. In this study, we evaluated electroretinogram (ERG) responses to red and blue flickering lights following dim and bright daylight conditions.

Methods: The authors retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 274 patients who underwent spinal MEL for symptomatic LSS. The minimum postoperative follow-up duration was 5 years.
Visual motion signals can produce self-motion perception known as vection in observers. Vection can be generated by illusory motions in the form of global expantion in still images as well as by visual motion signals. The perception of vection can be enhanced by flickering images at a rate of 5 Hz.

Case Report: A 62-year-old man complained of increased pain and hypoesthesia and muscle weakness of the left lower limb that had started 1 month before. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor-like mass at the L2-3 level on the posterior side of the dura.
Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the long-term outcomes of microendoscopic foraminotomy in treating lumbar foraminal stenosis and identify the optimal extent of decompression that yields improved results and fewer complications.
Methods: A retrospective cohort study reviewed the medical records of 95 consecutive patients who underwent microendoscopic foraminotomy for lumbar foraminal stenosis. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association scoring system and visual analog scale for low back and leg pain.
Microglia are specialized brain-resident macrophages that arise from primitive macrophages colonizing the embryonic brain. Microglia contribute to multiple aspects of brain development, but their precise roles in the early human brain remain poorly understood owing to limited access to relevant tissues. The generation of brain organoids from human induced pluripotent stem cells recapitulates some key features of human embryonic brain development.

The LBC, which may increase stabilization and decrease nonunion rate in treated segments, has rarely been described. This study aimed to identify the incidence and associated factors of LBC following XLIF.

The incidence of neurological deficit associated with PJF has been poorly described in the literature. Here, we report a case in which numbness in the lower extremities was recognized as the first symptom, but the discrepancy in the imaging findings made PJF difficult to diagnose.

Objective: We believe that the number and placement of S2 alar iliac (AI) screws and whether the screws loosen likely influence hip joint stress in the FE model.
Summary Of Background Data: Spinopelvic fixation has been shown to increase the risk of progression for hip joint osteoarthritis.
Introduction: Mechanical complications, such as rod fracture (RF) and proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK), commonly occur after adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. A rigid construct is preferred to prevent RF, whereas it is a risk factor for PJK. This controversial issue urged us to conduct a biomechanical study for seeking the optimal construct to prevent mechanical complications.

Methods: We analyzed 50 VAs from 25 consecutive patients with cervical spine injury that had been admitted to our emergency room. Ultrasonography and CTA were performed to assess the VA in patients with cervical spine injury.
Background Context: Low back pain (LBP) is common in children and adolescents, carrying substantial risk for recurrence and continuation into adulthood. Studies have linked obesity to the development of pediatric LBP; however, its association with lumbar spine degeneration, alignment parameters, and opioid use remains debated.
Purpose: Considering the increasing prevalence of pediatric obesity and LBP and the inherent issues with opioid use, this study aimed to assess the association of obesity with lumbar spine degeneration, spinopelvic alignment, and opioid therapy among pediatric patients.
Isavuconazonium sulfate is the water-soluble prodrug of the novel, broad-spectrum, triazole antifungal agent isavuconazole. Its pharmacokinetics (PK) and exposure-response relationship have been well investigated, but not in a Japanese patient population. The objectives of this analysis were to (1) develop a population PK model for Japanese patients with deep-seated mycoses and healthy subjects, and to identify significant covariates; (2) determine the probability of PK-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) target attainment in Japanese patients by a clinical dosing regimen; and (3) evaluate the exposure-safety relationship of isavuconazole in Japanese patients.

Objective: To investigate whether the immediate and short-term effects of preoperative electrical peripheral nerve stimulation (ePNS) on performance of the 10-second test could predict the early postoperative outcomes of patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM).
Summary Of Background Data: Previous studies have shown that early clinical improvement in CSM patients may be because of reversal of spinal cord ischemia after spinal cord compression.
Rabies is caused by neurotropic rabies virus (RABV), contributing to 60,000 human deaths annually. Even though rabies leads to major public health concerns worldwide, we still do not fully understand factors determining RABV tropism and why glial cells are unable to clear RABV from the infected brain. Here, we compare susceptibilities and immune responses of CNS cell types to infection with two RABV strains, Tha and its attenuated variant Th2P-4M, mutated on phospho- (P-protein) and matrix protein (M-protein).

Adult spinal deformity surgery improves saggital balance not only lumbar lesion, but also at hip joint coverage. It was expected that hip joint coverage rate was improved and joint stress decreased.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: Spinal fusion surgery is often performed with pelvic fixation to prevent distal junctional kyphosis. The inclusion of spinopelvic fixation has been reported to induce progression of hip joint arthropathy in a radiographic follow-up study. However, its biomechanical mechanism has not yet been elucidated.

However, it is occasionally seen at the vertebral body level, below the level of compression. We aimed to investigate the clinical significance and the radiographic characteristics of ISI at the vertebral body level.
