Subdural hematoma (SDH) is bleeding between the dura mater and the brain surface, often visualized as a crescent-shaped lesion on computed tomography (CT). However, some SDHs can appear as a biconvex hyperdense lesion mimicking an acute epidural hematoma. Encapsulated acute SDH (EASDH), a rare subtype characterized by a fresh hematoma within the subdural fibrous capsule, presents with similar CT findings.

: As the newcomer population in Canada continues to grow, we aimed to collaborate with newcomer families arriving in an urban center in Alberta, Canada to identify strategies to overcome identified barriers newcomers face in obtaining routine childhood vaccines (RCVs). : We recruited newcomers living in Calgary, Alberta to participate in a workshop utilizing the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) to develop solutions addressing barriers to obtaining RCVs. Ranking exercises helped identify the top-proposed interventions based on perceived impact and feasibility for implementation.

Comparison of Single Antiplatelet Therapy and Dual Antiplatelet Therapy after Endovascular Therapy in Patients with Lower Extremity Artery Disease.

Evidence for antithrombotic therapy after endovascular therapy (EVT) is limited. This retrospective, multicenter, observational study enrolled 732 consecutive patients with lower extremity artery disease who underwent EVT between January 2018 and December 2019. Overall, 570 patients who received single antiplatelet therapy (SAPT) and dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) were selected and divided into the SAPT (n = 189) and DAPT (n = 381) groups.

Dual single‑nucleotide polymorphism biomarker combination for opioid selection to treat cancer pain.

We have been exploring biomarkers that could help physicians select the appropriate opioid for individualized treatment of cancer pain. Recently, we identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of (rs17809012) as one such biomarker that was significantly associated with the analgesic effect of morphine. The current study measured the plasma concentrations of chemokines/cytokines in pre-treatment plasma samples of a total of 138 patients who were randomized to receive morphine (n=70) or oxycodone (n=68).

Background: An increase in choroid plexus (CP) volume may be associated with cognitive decline in older individuals without dementia. In this study, we aimed to clarify whether CP volume can serve as an imaging marker of cognitive decline, determine how strongly CP volume is associated with cognitive decline, and explore factors associated with CP volume in older adults.

Methods: We measured CP volume, brain parenchyma, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces associated with disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid space hydrocephalus (DESH), an imaging feature of normal-pressure hydrocephalus, in community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 65 years without dementia.

Background: The copy number status (CNS) of the survival motor neuron (SMN) gene may influence the risk and prognosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and lower motor neuron diseases (LMND) other than spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). However, previous studies of this association, mainly from Europe, have yielded controversial results, suggesting possible regional differences. Here, we investigated the effect of the SMN gene in Japanese patients with ALS and LMND.

Introduction: Previous research suggests that rural-urban disparities in diabetes mortality, hospitalization, and incidence rates may manifest differently across US regions. However, no studies have examined disparities in diabetes prevalence by metropolitan residence and region.

Methods: We used data from the 2019-2022 National Health Interview Survey to compare diabetes status, socioeconomic characteristics, and weight status among adults in each census region (Northeast, Midwest, South, West) according to county metropolitan status of residence (large central metro, large fringe metro, small/medium metro, and nonmetro).

Twisted Amide-Mediated Peptide Synthesis.

A robust, practical, and sustainable isomerization-suppressed peptide bond formation via acyl sulfonamide, a twisted amide, is disclosed. Tosyl isocyanate and pentafluorobenzyl bromide were applied in combination to activate the peptide C-terminus, which then reacted with an amine to yield an elongated peptide with high stereochemical purity. Careful analysis of NMR spectra of the active intermediate revealed the presence of an intramolecular hydrogen bond, suggesting that the hydrogen bond suppressed Cα-epimerization during amidation.
