The hydrocortisone-type corticosteroid (HTC) group includes valuable active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) such as hydrocortisone, hydrocortisone acetate, cortisone acetate, tixocortol pivalate, prednisolone, methylprednisolone, and prednisone. Unfortunately, those APIs are characterized by low solubility, which hampers their application and reduces their therapeutic efficacy. The low polarity of HTC molecules allows them to form inclusion complexes with various cyclodextrins (CDs); however, as shown in this review, the type of applied CDs has a major impact on the final properties of the formed complex.

Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are a promising target for research due to their small size and the resulting plasmonic properties, which depend, among other things, on the chosen reducer. This is important because removing excess substrate from the reaction mixture is problematic. However, Au NPs are an excellent component of various materials, enriching them with their unique features.

Folic acid (FA) and its structural analog, anticancer medicine methotrexate (MTX), are known to form host/guest complexes with native cyclodextrins, of which the most stable are formed with the medium-sized β-cyclodextrin. Based on our research, proving that simple sugars (D-glucose, D-galactose, and D-mannose) can form adducts with folic acid, we envisioned that combining these two types of molecular receptors (cyclodextrin and simple carbohydrates) into one may be beneficial for the complexation of FA and MTX. We designed and obtained host/guest inclusion complexes of FA and MTX with two monoderivatives of β-cyclodextrin-substituted at position 6 with monosaccharide (glucose, G-β-CD) and disaccharide (maltose, Ma-β-CD).

Cell-based therapeutic strategies have been proposed as an alternative for brain and blood vessels repair after stroke, but their clinical application is hampered by potential adverse effects. We therefore tested the hypothesis that secretome of these cells might be used instead to still focus on cell-based therapeutic strategies. We therefore characterized the composition and the effect of the secretome of brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) on primary in vitro human models of angiogenesis and vascular barrier.

The chiroptical activity of various semiconductor inorganic nanocrystalline materials has typically been tested using circular dichroism or circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, we report on a high-throughput screening method for identifying and differentiating chiroptically active quantum-sized ZnO crystals using Raman spectroscopy combined with principal component analysis. ZnO quantum dots (QDs) coated by structurally diverse homo- and heterochiral aminoalcoholate ligands (- and -1-amino-2-indanolate, 2-amino-1-phenylethanolate, and diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinemethanolate) were prepared using the one-pot self-supporting organometallic procedure and then extensively studied toward the identification of specific Raman fingerprints and spectral variations.

This work describes the optimization of the one-pot synthesis of fine nanostructures based on nanogold (Au NPs) and silica (SiO). The obtained nanomaterials were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM and by the method of spectroscopes such as UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). In addition, the measurement of the zeta potential and size of the obtained particles helped present a full characterization of Au@SiO nanostructures.

Forest soils harbor hyper-diverse microbial communities which fundamentally regulate carbon and nutrient cycling across the globe. Directly testing hypotheses on how microbiome diversity is linked to forest carbon storage has been difficult, due to a lack of paired data on microbiome diversity and in situ observations of forest carbon accumulation and storage. Here, we investigated the relationship between soil microbiomes and forest carbon across 238 forest inventory plots spanning 15 European countries.

Nanoparticles (NPs) of noble metals such as silver (Ag NPs) or gold (Au NPs) draw the attention of scientists looking for new compounds to use in medical applications. Scientists have used metal NPs because of their easy preparation, biocompatibility, ability to influence the shape and size or modification, and surface functionalization. However, to fully use their capabilities, both the benefits and their potential threats should be considered.

Introduction: Sphingolipids regulate proinsulin folding, insulin secretion and control beta cells apoptosis. Recent evidence has demonstrated that, among other factors, reduced amounts of sulfatide may be relevant in the development of type 1 diabetes (T1D). Thus, fenofibrate, which activates sulfatide biosynthesis, may prolong remission in subjects with T1D.

In the human body, tumor cell occurrence can be indirectly monitored using the L-selectin concentration in the blood, since selectin ligands are present on the surface of tumor cells, and with tumor progression, a decrease in L-selectin levels can be expected and observed. In this study, we present a selective DNA-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) assay for the detection and determination of L-selectin in biological samples. Two calibration curves (linear in the 40-190 ng mL region and exponential in the 40-500 ng mL region) are fitted to the obtained SERS experimental data, i.

Low-energy nuclear reactions are known to be extremely dependent on the local crystal structure and crystal defects of the deuterated samples. This has a strong influence on both hydrogen diffusion and the effective electron mass. The latter determines the strength of the local electron-screening effect and can change the deuteron-deuteron reaction rates at very low energies by many orders of magnitude.
