Background: Large prostate size, median lobes, and prior benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) surgery may pose technical challenges during robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP).

Objective: To describe technical modifications to overcome BPH sequelae and associated outcomes.

Design, Settings, And Participants: A retrospective study of prospective data on 951 RALP procedures performed from September 2005 to November 2010 was conducted.

Background: Apical dissection and control of the dorsal vein complex (DVC) affects blood loss, apical positive margins, and urinary control during robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (RALP).

Objective: To describe technique and outcomes for athermal DVC division followed by selective suture ligation (DVC-SSL) compared with DVC suture ligation followed by athermal division (SL-DVC).

Design, Settings, And Participants: Retrospective study of prospectively collected data from February 2008 to July 2010 for 303 SL-DVC and 240 DVC-SSL procedures.

PURPOSE We have shown that ultrasound (US) -guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) can accurately identify the sentinel node (SN). Moreover, US-guided FNAC before the surgical SN procedure could identify up to 65% of all SN metastases. Herein we analyzed in detail the different US morphologic patterns of SN metastases.

Objective: To determine the degree of association, if any, between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and osteoporosis, both of which are disorders of impaired calcium carbonate homeostasis.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was undertaken in two otology clinics to assess the prevalence of treated osteoporosis in 260 women with and without benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, between the ages of 51 and 80 years.

Results: There was a statistically significant, negative association between benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and treated osteoporosis in women aged 51 to 60 years.

Purpose: Development of new renal tumors or recurrence after radio frequency ablation not amendable for repeat ablation presents a difficult therapeutic dilemma. We report on the outcomes of partial nephrectomy on kidneys previously treated with radio frequency ablation.

Materials And Methods: We performed a chart review of 13 patients who underwent 16 attempted partial nephrectomies following radio frequency ablation.

ADAM17 (a disintegrin and metalloprotease)-deficient murine fibroblasts stably transfected with proTNF cDNA release significant amounts of biologically active soluble TNF. The enzyme responsible for this activity is a membrane protein that hydrolyzes the peptide bond Ala(76):Val(77) within proTNF. Its activity is inhibited by 1,10-phenantroline and GM6001, insusceptible to TIMP-2 (tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2), and stimulated by ionomycin.

Twelve Polish spring wheat cultivars and 18 spring wheat accessions from CIMMYT, Mexico, were examined for resistance to a highly pathogenic Fusarium culmorum strain KF846 and powdery mildew in 5-year field experiments. Resistant wheat cultivars (Sumai 3 and Frontana) served as controls. The mean percentage of Fusarium-damaged kernels (% FDK) for 5 years was lower in CIMMYT accessions (16.

Five accessions of Aegilops speltoides and 67 European wheat cultivars (winter and spring) originating from the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, United Kingdom, and 4 non-European wheat cultivars from Brazil and the USA were examined with molecular Sequence Tagged Site (STS) markers for resistance genes to powdery mildew: Pm 1, Pm 2, Pm 3 and Pm 13. All markers gave clear, repeatable results, although three of them (Pm 1, Pm 2 and Pm 3) appeared as not specific for resistance genes. Comparison of STS analysis results with Pm genes, postulated as the reaction type after inoculation with differential isolates of Erysiphe graminis f.

Spring wheat nursery accessions, including 18 spring wheat lines derived in CIMMYT, Mexico, and 12 spring wheat cultivars bred in Poland, along with cultivars Frontana and Sumai 3 as resistant controls, were examined for resistance to leaf rust under field conditions. Multipathotype tests with 16 different pathogen isolates were performed for postulation of Lr genes in Polish cultivars. Besides, STS markers for resistance genes Lr1, Lr9, Lr10, Lr24, Lr28, Lr37 were analysed in the studied cultivars and lines with Thatcher near-isogenic lines as positive controls.

Gel filtration of human thyroid extract with Sephadex G-200 revealed two molecular forms of adenosine deaminase differing in their molecular sizes. The smaller form of adenosine deaminase was purified over 120-fold by precipitation of the protein impurities at pH5.6 and chromatography on DEAE-Sephadex A-50, Sephadex G-100 and adenosine-Sepharose.

The effect of combination of imipramine or amitriptyline acute or chronic treatment with ethanol on EEG was studied in rabbits with electrodes chronically implanted into the frontal cortex, dorsal hippocampus and midbrain reticular formation. In addition, to study the effect of the treatment on development of tolerance to ethanol, a group of rabbits receiving ethanol with antidepressants was additionally injected iv with ethanol once a week. Single doses of both the antidepressants did not alter the effect of acute administration of ethanol on EEG, but imipramine and amitriptyline potentiated the ethanol-induced changes in the EEG recorded from the midbrain reticular formation in rabbits receiving ethanol chronically and in the period of abstinene.

The effect of a combined treatment with ethanol and imipramine or amitriptyline was tested in mice and rats. The antidepressants were given in one or, in some experiments, in 21 daily doses of 10 mg/kg each. In mice the effect of antidepressants was tested on acute toxicity, disturbances of rota-rod performance, hypothermia and sleeping induced by ethanol, in rats the effect of the antidepressants on the development of tolerance to sleep-inducing and hypothermic action of ethanol was investigated.

A case of mitochondrial enzymopathy, called also ophthalmoplegia plus, was observed in a 31-year-old man. Histoenzymatic investigations demonstrated in the myocytes decreased and irregularity of reactions for succinic dehydrogenase, tetrazole reductase and mitochondrial ATPase. In electron microscopy paracrystalline structures, lamellar bodies and concentrically condensed cristae were seen in the mitochondria, and increased glycogen stores outside the mitochondria.

Quantitative and temporal features of maternal-fetal transport of IgG in the chicken have been determined by means of a sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay. The first step in this two-step process is the transport of maternal IgG from the hen plasma across the oolemma into the maturing oocyte in the ovarian follicle. Oocytes sequester IgG throughout most of their maturation from 10 mg pre-vitellogenic oocytes to fully mature 20 g oocytes ready to be shed into the oviduct.

Structural juxtaposition of the 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl group in the same molecule with a piperazine or homopiperazine ring has been realized in a series of mescaline analogues (I-IV) as part of an investigation into the pharmacological properties of the seven-membered perhydro-1,4-diazepines (homopiperazines). The analogous six-membered piperazines were synthesized and tested as reference substances to determine whether the seven-membered ring conveyed special properties. A variety of pharmacological tests of action on the CNS showed that replacement of the amino group in mescaline by the heterocycles significantly alters the biological activity.

The authors present their observations on treatment with Noveril of nocturnal enuresis in 49 children aged from 6 to 16 years. The drug is a derivative of dibenzodiazepine belonging to the group of thymoleptic agents with an action similar to that of imipramine. Noveril was given in doses from 20 to 100 mg daily during 3 to 9 weeks.
