Targeting P-selectin and interleukin-1β in mice with sickle cell disease: effects on vaso-occlusion, liver injury and organ iron deposition.

Continuous vaso-occlusive and inflammatory processes cause extensive end-organ damage in adults with sickle cell disease (SCD), and there is little evidence that longterm hydroxyurea therapy prevents this. In initial trials, P-selectin blockade with crizanlizumab reduced SCD vaso-occlusive crisis frequency, and interleukin (IL)-1β inhibition in SCD patients, using canakinumab, lowered inflammatory markers. We used murine SCD models to examine the effects of acute and chronic blockade of Pselectin and of IL-1β on vaso-occlusive events, their inflammatory profile and organ health.

Timing of development of osteoradionecrosis post head and neck radiotherapy: does a safe time interval exist for dental extraction?

Introduction: Risk factors for developing osteoradionecrosis (ORN) are well known, but less is known about factors influencing the interval between radiotherapy and the onset of ORN. Also, it is unknown whether there is any specific period post-radiotherapy with a reduced probability of ORN when irradiated teeth require extraction.

Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to identify factors influencing the interval in developing ORN in the following subgroups of patients: (1) patients who spontaneously developed ORN, (2) surgical-intervention-related ORN with a particular focus on patients after mandibulectomy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe women's experiences seeking treatment for opioid use disorder during pregnancy.

Study Design And Methods: This was an exploratory multi-method study to understand women's experiences seeking treatment for opioid use disorder during pregnancy using surveys and interviews. Women pregnant within the past 5 years while using opioids were recruited from a private Facebook group for mothers on medication for opioid use disorder.

Role of Adjuvant Radiotherapy in Acinic Cell Carcinoma of the Salivary Glands: A Systematic Review.

A systematic review was carried out to evaluate if adjuvant radiotherapy for acinic cell carcinomas (ACCs) of salivary glands improves survival. Twelve retrospective studies published between 2000 and 2020 that analysed the effect of radiotherapy on salivary gland neoplasms and ACCs of salivary glands and met the inclusion criteria were included in the review. The overall quality of the studies was moderate to low.

Risk factors predicting cervical spine fracture on CT in craniocervical trauma - retrospective study.

Introduction: The study identifies risk factors predicting cervical spine fracture on CT based on information in the referral form.

Methods: All patients aged over 18 years with a CT scan of the head and cervical spine completed at the University Hospital Brno in the year 2019 to exclude any fresh trauma were included in the retrospective study. The analyzed potential risk factors included gender, age over 65 years, unconsciousness or impaired consciousness, mechanism of injury, paresthesia or plegia suspected to be associated with trauma, cervical spine pain, other neurological symptomatology, presence of cervical collar, presence of intracranial hemorrhage on head CT, and presence of skull fracture on head CT.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Detection in Bioelectrical Impedance Cardiovascular Screenings-A Pilot Study.

Screening and diagnosing abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are currently dependent on imaging studies such as ultrasound or computed tomography angiography. All imaging studies offer distinct advantages but also suffer from inherent limitations such as examiner dependency or ionizing radiation. Bioelectrical impedance analysis has previously been investigated with respect to its use in the detection of several cardiovascular and renal pathologies.

Hypofractionated (2.75 Gy per fraction) versus Conventionally Fractionated Primary Radiotherapy for T2N0M0 Carcinoma of the Glottis.

 Radiotherapy provides excellent outcome in early stage glottic cancer; however, the optimal radiotherapy dose fractionation remains unknown.  To investigate the outcome of patients with T2N0M0 treated with either hypofractionated (HypoFxn) or conventionally fractionated radical (ConFxn) radiotherapy.  According to our institutional protocol, patients with T2N0M0 glottic cancer can be treated either with ConfFxn or HypoFxn radiotherapy, as per clinician's and patient's choice, following shared decision making discussing the advantages and disadvantages of both modalities.

A multi-omics based anti-inflammatory immune signature characterizes long COVID-19 syndrome.

To investigate long COVID-19 syndrome (LCS) pathophysiology, we performed an exploratory study with blood plasma derived from three groups: 1) healthy vaccinated individuals without SARS-CoV-2 exposure; 2) asymptomatic recovered patients at least three months after SARS-CoV-2 infection and; 3) symptomatic patients at least 3 months after SARS-CoV-2 infection with chronic fatigue syndrome or similar symptoms, here designated as patients with long COVID-19 syndrome (LCS). Multiplex cytokine profiling indicated slightly elevated pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in recovered individuals in contrast to patients with LCS. Plasma proteomics demonstrated low levels of acute phase proteins and macrophage-derived secreted proteins in LCS.

Shrinkage of the non-malignant prostate gland volume after receiving incidental radiotherapy for rectal cancer.

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of coincidental radiotherapy on the volume of the non-malignant prostate gland in rectal cancer patients treated with neo-adjuvant radiotherapy.

Materials And Methods: In this retrospective analysis, thirty male patients with rectal cancer who had neoadjuvant radiotherapy met the inclusion criteria. These patients had pre-treatment magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and at least one post-treatment MRI of the pelvis and the whole of their prostate volume received the full prescribed radiotherapy dose; 45 Gy in 25 fractions (n = 22), 45 Gy in 20 fractions (n = 4) and 25 Gy in 5 fractions (n = 4).

Survival outcomes for patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in non-endemic region in the UK treated with intensity modulated based radiotherapy 65 Gy in 30 fractions ± weekly cisplatin chemotherapy.

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is rare in the UK. The aim of the current study was to investigate survival outcomes for patients with NPC treated with (chemo)radiotherapy using 65 Gy in 30 fractions in a non-endemic region.

Materials And Methods: All consecutive 62 patients with histology proven non-metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma diagnosed between January 2009 to June 2019 were included in this retrospective analysis.

The Short-Term Antibacterial Activity of Three Selected Endodontic Sealers against Bacterial Culture.

(1) Background: Microorganisms originating from the microflora of the oral cavity are the main cause of the inflammatory diseases of the dental pulp and periapical periodontium, as well as the failure of endodontic treatment. The subsequent root canal treatment is not able to remove all the pathogens, and a small number of viable bacteria remain in the dentine tubules, which must be sealed by endodontic sealers. These sealers should have at least a bacteriostatic effect to prevent the remaining bacteria from reproducing.

Exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic environment and generosity.

We report data from an online experiment which allows us to study how generosity changed over a 6-day period during the initial explosive growth of the COVID-19 pandemic in Andalusia, Spain, while the country was under a strict lockdown. Participants ( = 969) could donate a fraction of a €100 prize to an unknown charity. Our data are particularly rich in the age distribution and we complement them with daily public information about COVID-19-related deaths, infections and hospital admissions.

Combined sodium glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitor and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition upregulates the renin-angiotensin system in chronic kidney disease with type 2 diabetes: Results of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled exploratory trial.

Aim: Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2i) improve cardiorenal outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), with and without type 2 diabetes. The molecular mechanisms underlying these pleiotropic effects remain unclear, yet it is speculated that SGLT-2i elicit a neurohormonal modulation resulting in renin-angiotensin system (RAS) activation. We hypothesized that combined SGLT-2 and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition (ACEi) favours RAS regulation towards the beneficial angiotensin-(1-7)-driven axis.

Osteoradionecrosis after treatment of head and neck cancer: a comprehensive analysis of risk factors with a particular focus on role of dental extractions.

In head and neck cancer (HNC), osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is one of the most significant complications of radiotherapy (RT). With an absence of effective non-surgical treatment, prevention of the development of ORN is the best approach. The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors for the development of ORN in HNC.

Dental loss after radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.
