In this work, the chemical equilibrium between enol and keto tautomers occurring in phenol, naphthols and selected 29 hydroxy substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons classified into 4 structural types was investigated. The reaction Gibbs energies were computed using the density functional theory combined with the solvent continuum model. We have demonstrated how the consecutive condensation of benzene rings together with two-dimensional molecular arrangement and the position of the hydroxyl group modifies this equilibrium.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to stratify the immunological risk based on the presence of risk factors using different induction immunosuppressive protocols.

Background: The path to successful kidney transplantation reflects the accuracy of immunological risk assessment and choice of correct induction and maintenance of immunosuppression to avoid acute kidney rejection.

Methods: We performed a multicentre prospective analysis consisting of patients after kidney transplantation with a 12-month follow-up.

Recurrence of the primary disease is one of the most common causes of graft failure in the first decade after kidney transplantation. We present a case of a patient with an unusually rapid recurrence of focal segmental glomerulonephritis in the graft, the recognition of its occurrence was hampered by the primary graft affection and oligoanuria and by insignificant histological changes in the first two biopsy samples in the early post-transplant period, as well as by unawareness of the disease leading to terminal renal failure, as no renal biopsy was performed due to grade 3 obesity. Only worsening of hypoalbuminemia and finding of massive proteinuria despite oligoanuria were crucial for further management.

Purpose: To investigate computed tomography (CT) features which predict lung resection in children with complicated community-acquired pneumonia.

Methods: A retrospective study of CT findings of patients with complicated pneumonia treated between January 2010 and December 2019. Fisher's exact test and ROC curves were used for statistical analysis.

The treatment of children with posterior fossa brain tumours (PFBT) impacts their long term functional and imaging outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate academic achievement correlated with long-term sequelae after different PFBT treatment modalities. The study cohort consisted of 110 survivors (median age at diagnosis 10.

Epidemiological reports strongly indicate that pterygium is an ophthalmoheliosis: a sun-related eye disease. Familial occurrence of pterygium is rare but supports the concept that heredity may predispose the conjunctiva to react abnormally to atmospheric-environmental stimuli. We describe a two generation Caucasian family of five members from the United Kingdom, four of whom developed pterygia in early adulthood with autosomal dominant inheritance.

Roma constitute the largest ethnic minority in Europe and the second largest minority in Slovakia. Their health problems originate mainly from their low socioeconomic status, certain cultural aspects and their health-threatening lifestyle as well as the psycho-social burden arising from poverty and frequent migration. Evaluation of glucose, albumin, triacylglycerol (TAG) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations did not reveal any clue about the presumed deteriorated health of the Roma population.

Ball milling of easy glass forming Ti(25)Zr(17)Ni(29)Cu(29) alloys lead to the formation of an amorphous structure accompanied by a substantial increase of powder microhardness. The powders show clear glass transition effect and a few stage crystallization starting above 500 degrees C. High-resolution transmission electron microscope technique allowed identifying nanocrystalline inclusions as Cu(12)NiTi(7) within the amorphous powder.

Amorphous powder of composition corresponding to Ni60Ti20Zr20 (in at%) was obtained by ball milling in a high-energy mills starting from pure elements. Formation of the amorphous structure was observed already after 20 h of milling, although complete amorphization occurred after 40 h. The microhardness of powders increased from about 30 HV for pure elements to above 400 HV (1290 MPa) after 40 h of milling.

Amorphous structure of Ti(25)Zr(17)Ni(29)Cu(29) composition was studied. Alloys were prepared either by rapid solidification using melt spinning or by high-energy ball milling. The composition of multi-component eutectic in slowly cooled samples of ZrNiTiCu alloy was determined using EDS measurements in scanning microscope of slowly cooled cast samples.

This study brings the analysis of amino acid sequences of hemagglutinin (HA) from the influenza virus A that can infect a wide variety of birds and mammals. 191 sequences belonging to all known 15 HA subtypes were compared. The emphasis was given on functional sites (receptor-binding cavity with its right and left edges) and degree of their conservation in each subtype.

The authors investigated the relationship between the activity of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and serum lipid levels in patients with essential hypertension (EH). They examined 72 patients with EH stage I and II WHO classification (group A, n = 72, age bracket 16-70 years). They investigated the plasma renin activity (PRA), plasma aldosterone (PA) and total cholesterol (TCH), HDL, LDL cholesterol and triglycerides (TG).

12 healthy women (age 18-38 years) were examined using the 2-hour's method of passive leg rising (PLR) in follicular (FP) and luteal (LP) phases of normal ovulatory cycle. Renal and hormonal response to PLR was investigated. There was a significant increase of diuresis (from 53 +/- 9 ml/h to 298 +/- 27 ml/h in FP, from 69 +/- 12 to 324 +/- 28 ml/h in LP) and natriuresis (from 4.

A case of hereditary nephritis with mild reduction of renal function associated with renal tubular acidosis type IV is described. The patient was admitted with life-threatening hyperkalaemia. To our knowledge, type IV renal tubular acidosis has not been reported previously in association with Alport's syndrome in an adult patient.
