Located in presynaptic cholinergic nerve terminals, the vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) represents a potential target for quantitative visualization of early degeneration of cholinergic neurons in Alzheimer's disease using PET. Benzovesamicol derivatives are proposed as radioligands for this purpose. We report QSAR studies of vesamicol and benzovesamicol derivatives taking into account the stereoselectivity of the VAChT binding site.

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome refers to the concomitant occurrence of connective tissue nevi, composed of elastic fibers in most cases, with osteopoikilosis. This autosomal dominant inherited disorder is caused by mutations in the gene LEMD3 on chromosome 12q14, which induces a rather heterogeneous clinical phenotype. Here, we report on the most proximal germline mutation found to date in the LEMD3 gene, p.

Recurrent fetal loss (RFL) is common health problem affecting up to 5% of women of reproductive age. It has been shown that plasma thrombin-activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI) concentrations increase during pregnancy and return to baseline levels soon after delivery. The +1040C/T single nucleotide polymorphism in coding region of TAFI gene is associated with TAFI blood levels.

Background/aims: Existing data regarding the prevalence of thrombophilia in women with pregnancy complications are conflicting.

Methods: To investigate the relationship between pregnancy-associated complications and the presence of thrombophilia, we studied the records of 453 women with pregnancy-associated complications. In 55 women, intrauterine fetal death (fetus mortus in utero, FMU) after 20 weeks of gestation was recorded, in 231 two or more consecutive recurrent fetal losses (RFL) were recorded, while 167 had a venous thromboembolism (VTE) during one of their pregnancies.

Introduction: Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is an acquired, prothrombotic disorder, caused by antibodies to a complex of heparin and platelet factor 4 (PF4) that activates platelets, resulting in the release of procoagulant microparticles, thrombocytopenia occurrence, generation of thrombin, and frequent thromboses.

Case Outline: We present a case of severe HIT in a 68-year-old female, which occurred after cardiosurgery of the left atrial myxoma with the aim to point out the importance of differential diagnosis of thrombocytopenia in patients recently exposed to heparin. Platelet count dropped on the eleventh postoperative day, six days after unfractioned heparin and enoxaparine threatment, to 4x10(9)/I.

Numerous investigations indicate a close link between violent behavior, homicide (murder) and alcohol intoxication. With increased frequency of drinking and the chronic consummation of alcohol, the risk of the fatal outcome or homicide and victimization caused by violence is more likely to occur. Studies conducted on convicted murderers suggested that about half of them were under the heavy influence of alcohol at the time of perpetration of murder.

We report here on a comparative developmental profile of plant hormone cytokinins in relation to cell size, cell number and endoreduplication in developing maize caryopsis of a cell wall invertase-deficient miniature1 (mn1) seed mutant and its wild type, Mn1, genotype. Both genotypes showed extremely high levels of total cytokinins during the very early stages of development, followed by a marked and genotype specific reduction. While the decrease of cytokinins in Mn1 was associated with their deactivation by 9-glucosylation, the absolute and the relative part of active cytokinin forms was higher in the mutant.

BCR-ABL fusion proteins show increased signaling through their ABL tyrosine kinase domain, which can be blocked by specific inhibitors, thereby providing effective treatment. This makes detection of BCR-ABL aberrations of utmost importance for diagnosis, classification and treatment of leukemia patients. BCR-ABL aberrations are currently detected by karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) or PCR techniques, which are time consuming and require specialized facilities.

The efficiencies of different solvents in the extraction of phenolics from bagged and loose leaves of white and green tea, after different extraction times, as well as the antioxidative capacity of the obtained extracts, were investigated. The developed HPLC method has the potential to separate and determinate 17 phenolics widely distributed in plants, but in investigated tea extracts only four catechins and traces of three flavonols and one flavone were separated and detected based on comparison with authentic standards. The extraction efficiency of phenolics depended strongly on the time of extraction and the solvents used.
