The present study investigated the association between the mode of tumor recurrence and prognosis in 123 patients with clinical stage II/III rectal cancer. In the past 10 years, patients received systemic chemotherapy following radical (R0, with no macroscopic residual tumor lesions) resection using total or tumor-specific mesorectal excision. Patients with rectosigmoid cancer and T4 + chemoradiation therapy were excluded from the present study.

Mannitol and alginate are the major carbohydrates found in the microalga Laminaria japonica (Konbu). To convert mannitol to fructose for its utilization as a carbon source in mannitol non-assimilating bacteria, a psychrophile-based simple biocatalyst (PSCat) was constructed using a psychrophile as a host by expressing mesophilic enzymes, including mannitol 2-dehydrogenase for mannitol oxidation, and NADH oxidase and alkyl hydroxyperoxide reductase for NAD regeneration.
