Introduction: Urine cytology using the Paris system (TPS) classification is useful for the detection and monitoring of bladder urothelial carcinoma (UC). However, the categories "atypical urothelial cells" (AUCs) and "suspicious for high-grade urothelial carcinoma" (SHGUC) do not establish a clear diagnosis. This pilot study aimed to investigate whether the presence of mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 (FGFR3) and telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) genes, in urine processed with liquid-based cytology (LBC) could enhance the diagnostic performance of cytology, particularly in defining the indeterminate categories of AUC and SHGUC.

Background: In males with end stage renal disease biochemical hypogonadism is a frequent finding. Testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) have been associated with insulin resistance, a well-known condition in uremia. The aim of the present study was to investigate in males on chronic hemodialysis the relationship of testosterone and SHBG serum levels with insulin resistance.

Background: The risk of recurrence after nephrectomy for primary clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is estimated in daily practice solely based on clinical criteria. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic relevance of common somatic mutations with respect to tumor aggressiveness and outcomes of ccRCC patients after definitive treatment.

Methods: Primary tumors from 37 patients with ccRCC who underwent radical nephrectomy were analyzed for presence of somatic mutations using a 15-gene targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel.

Nutritional Considerations in Colorectal Surgery in Diverting Ileostomy Patients: A Review.

Colorectal surgery often results in a temporary or permanent ileostomy construction. The general nutritional status and intake of patients with an ileostomy have not received much attention and scientific evidence is lacking. Nutritional complications associated with ileostomy formation and colonic exclusion include fluid (dehydration) and electrolyte abnormalities (mainly hyponatremia), impaired renal function occurring from plasma volume depletion, and reduced energy absorption due to the role of the large bowel in energy assimilation.

Background: FibroMeter and FibroMeter vibration-controlled transient elastography (FibroMeter VCTE) were assessed in a Greek cohort of patients with chronic viral hepatitis (CVH) B and C or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) to evaluate their accuracy in predicting advanced liver fibrosis against other well-validated noninvasive markers.

Methods: Group 1: n=83 CVH and group 2: n=38 MASLD patients underwent liver biopsy and transient elastography (TE) on the same day as sera collection. FibroMeter scores APRI and FIB-4 were calculated in all 121 patients, while MASLD fibrosis score (MFS) was also calculated in group 2.

It is well known that various human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes are present in semen specimens. Also, it has been demonstrated that sperm parameters are negatively affected when HPV infection is present in the sperm sample. Besides all these, the effect of cryopreservation on HPV sensitivity and resistance is not known.

Background: Severe complicated intra-abdominal sepsis (SCIAS) has an increasing incidence with mortality rates over 80% in some settings. Background And Aims: Little is known about the impact of DNA methylation modifications on autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) pathogenesis and therapeutic response. We investigated the potential alterations of DNA methylation in AIH peripheral lymphocytes at diagnosis and remission.
