Population at high-risk of indoor heatstroke: the usage of cooling appliances among urban elderlies in Japan.

Objectives: Heatstroke due to a heat wave during the summer is one of the commonly known health impacts of climate change in Japan. The elderly are particularly at high-risk of developing indoor heatstroke with poor prognosis. This study aims to describe the population among elderlies at high-risk of indoor heatstroke by focusing on the usage of cooling appliances.

[Use of argatroban as a substitute for heparin in a patient with suspected HIT type II undergoing carotid endarterectomy].

Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) type II is characterized by a decrease in platelet count and thrombosis following heparin administration. We anesthetized a 67-year-old woman with suspected HIT type II undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Preoperatively, the patient had received anticoagulation therapy with heparin for cerebral infarction due to thrombosis and she developed thrombocytopenia with deterioration of cerebral infarction.

[Reexpansion pulmonary edema after removal of a giant thoracic tumor associated with long-time lung collapse and mediastinal shift].

A 64-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for removal of a thoracic tumor. Chest X-ray and computed tomography demonstrated a giant thoracic tumor occupying the right thorax, with the right lung almost completely collapsed and the mediastinum shifted to the left. Her preoperative pulmonary function studies revealed %vital capacity of 30%, and her oxyhemoglobin saturation was 92% (room air).
