Background/aim: Malignant lymphoma (ML) including Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is often treated with local radiation therapy (RT) in combination with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT) to prevent relapse; however, the efficacy and optimal timing of this approach is unclear. In this study, a national survey conducted by the Japanese Radiation Oncology Study Group reviewed ML cases from 2011 to 2019 to determine whether RT should be added to ASCT, focusing on the use of autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT), a predominant form of ASCT.

Patients And Methods: The survey encompassed 92 patients from 11 institutes, and assessed histological ML types, treatment regimens, timing of RT relative to auto-PBSCT, and associated adverse events.

Reduced-intensity stem cell transplantation (RIST) minimizes the adverse effects of traditional hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, and low-dose total-body irradiation (TBI) is administered over a short period prior to RIST (TBI-RIST). Different institutes adopt different approaches for the administration of TBI-RIST, and since no study had previously investigated this issue, a survey of the TBI schedules in Japan was conducted. Potentially lethal damage (PLD) and its repair were studied in confluent human fibroblasts by analyzing the kinetics of chromosome break rejoining and misrejoining in irradiated cells that were either held in noncycling G(0) phase or allowed to enter G(1) phase of the cell cycle immediately after 6 Gy irradiation. Virally mediated premature chromosome condensation (PCC) methods were combined with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to study chromosomal aberrations in interphase. Flow cytometry revealed that the vast majority of cells had not yet entered S phase 15 h after release from G(0).

The objective of this retrospective study was to report initial results of CyberKnife stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) boost for tumors in the head and neck area. Between March 2008 and August 2009, 10 patients were treated with SRT boost using CyberKnife system due mainly to unfavorable condition such as tumors in close proximity to serial organs or former radiotherapy fields. Treatment sites were the external auditory canal in two, the nasopharynx in one, the oropharynx in three, the nasal cavity in one, the maxillary sinus in two, and the oligometastatic cervical lymph node in one.

The honeybee product propolis and its extracts are known to have biological effects such as antibiotic, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor activities. This study was designed to investigate whether water-soluble propolis (WSP) inhibits tumor growth. Purpose: To evaluate long-term pulmonary toxicity of stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) by pulmonary function tests (PFTs) performed before and after SRT for small peripheral lung tumors.

Many physicians administer involved field radiation therapy (RT) following brief chemotherapy for localized aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The mechanisms underlying the hyper-radiosensitivity of AT cells were investigated by analyzing chromosome aberrations in the G(2) and M phases of the cell cycle using a combination of chemically induced premature chromosome condensation (PCC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with chromosome painting probes. Confluent cultures of normal fibroblast cells (AG1522) and fibroblast cells derived from an individual with AT (GM02052) were exposed to gamma rays and allowed to repair at 37 degrees C for 24 h. At doses that resulted in 10% survival, GM02052 cells were approximately five times more sensitive to gamma rays than AG1522 cells.

The authors report the high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) appearance of diffuse pulmonary involvement by mycosis fungoides in a 74-year-old woman whose clinical and radiographic manifestations simulated pneumonia. The HRCT showed multiple, dense, peribronchovascular nodules with surrounding ground-glass opacity and several wedge-shape peripheral opacities. The autopsy specimen revealed angiocentric and peribronchovascular involvement of mycosis fungoides and pulmonary infarctions distal to angiocentric infiltration of the tumor cells.

We analyzed the immunoglobulin heavy chain variable region (V(H)) gene in seven cases of sporadic Burkitt's lymphoma (sBL) to elucidate their cell of origin. In particular, we focused on the V(H) gene status of tumor cells involving adjacent germinal center (GC) by microdissecting histological sections. Among the seven V(H) genes V(H)1 family was found in two, V(H)3 in four, and V(H)4 in one.
