Positron emission tomography (PET) is a powerful tool because we can acquire functional information of tissue from the images with high sensitivity and relatively high spatial resolution. However, high-spatial-resolution PET imaging for high-energy positron emitters is difficult because the positrons have a long range and annihilation radiations are emitted at the endpoints of the positrons' trajectories. Along the trajectories, Cerenkov light (CL) is also emitted in advance of the emission of annihilation radiations.

Purpose: Astatine-211 (At-211) is a promising alpha emitter for radionuclide therapy. High-resolution in vivo imaging of At-211 in small animals is needed for the development of At-211 radiopharmaceuticals. For this purpose, we developed a low-energy x-ray camera using a thin YAlO :Ce (YAP(Ce)) plate to image the low-energy x rays (73-87 keV) from the daughter radionuclide of At-211 (Po-211).

For the imaging using low energy pure beta-emitting radionuclides, autoradiography is used by slicing the subjects because the range of beta particles is short and thought to be impossible to detect beta particles from outside the subjects. Contrary to this scientific consensus, we recently found that the distributions of C-14 could be measured by detecting the bremsstrahlung X-rays emitted from the solution of C-14 and may also be applicable to lower energy pure beta-emitting radionuclide, H-3. Although the detection of bremsstrahlung X-rays emitted from H-3 and C-14 may be a possible method for in-vivo imaging of small animals, the absorption of the bremsstrahlung X-rays in the subjects are significant because the energy of bremsstrahlung X-rays is relatively low.
