A detailed understanding of craniofacial ontogenetic development is important in a variety of scientific disciplines dealing with facial reconstruction, forensic identification, ageing prediction, and monitoring of pathological growth, including the effect of therapy. The main goals of this study were (1) the construction of the facial aging model using local polynomial regression fitting separately for both sexes, (2) evaluation of the aging effect not only on facial form as a whole but also on dimensions important for clinical practice, and (3) monitoring of the development of shape facial sexual dimorphism. Our study was based on the form and shape analysis of three-dimensional facial surface models of 456 individuals aged 14-83 years.

Dealing with the increasing number of long-term missing children and juveniles requires more precise and objective age progression techniques for the prediction of their current appearance. Our contribution includes detailed and real facial growth information used for modelling age progression during adolescence. This study was based on an evaluation of the overall 180 three-dimensional (3D) facial scans of Czech children (23 boys, 22 girls), which were longitudinally studied from 12 to 15 years of age and thus revealed the real growth-related changes.

The authors present three case reports of primary pyomyositis, a severe but rare disorder involving the muscles around the hip. In three boys, with an average age of 16 years, the disease developed suddenly in association with strenuous sporting activities. The boys had fever, pain and restricted motion at hip joints, haemoculture tests positive for Staphylococcus aureus and the presence of inflammatory markers.

The authors present the results of total knee replacement in a 66-year-old woman with achondroplasia. The condition was diagnosed on the basis of clinical and radiographic findings; molecular genetic examination confirmed that the patient was heterozygous for the G1138A mutation responsible for substitution of an arginine for a glycine residue at position 380 (G380R). The patient presented with an unusual finding of severe fixed 20-degree valgus deformity, so far not published, which did not conform with the clinical features of achondroplasia.

The authors describe the concomitant presence of plantar fibromatosis and Dupuytren's disease in a 33-year-old man. A lesion located under the sesamoid bones of the first metatarsophalangeal joint on the right showed an aggressive tendency (rapid growth, pain, impossibility to put weight on the medial side of the foot). A fifty-year-old woman with developmental dysplasia of the hip underwent total hip arhtroplasty, and subsequently developed recurrent venous thrombophilia of the lower extremities. Hematological examination revealed an inherited disorder of blood coagulation (homozygous mutation of the 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase gene) and therefore longterm Warfarin anticoagulation therapy was started. A year later she was diagnosed with a large pelvic posthemorrhagic pseudocyst (hematoma) located below the musculus iliacus and adhering to bone in the region of posterior acetabulum.

In our previous studies we have found both an increase of lipid peroxidation damage (expressed as levels of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances) in brain and plasma lactate concentration in 21-day-old rats after a 30-min exposure to hypobaric hypoxia. Pretreatment of rats with L-carnitine decreased both parameters. The aim of our present study was to determine if the L-carnitine-dependent decrease of plasma lactate could be due to a modification of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity.

Background: The main objective of our work was to draw attention to the possible occurrence of a serious and life-threatening illness, primary pyomyositis of the obturator muscles in countries with a mild climate, and to establish basic diagnostic criteria for the illness, including differential diagnostics, and to propose a treatment method.

Methods: The authors describe two cases (a boy of 11 and a woman aged 47 years) with the occurrence of primary pyomyositis of the obturator muscles in the Czech Republic and they focus on the most important clinical symptoms and imaging methods necessary for the establishment of the diagnosis.

Results: Repeated clinical examinations are important for the establishment of the diagnosis, particularly the presence of the symptom triad (pain in the hip joint, limping, febrile state), positive inflammatory markers and, first and foremost, the demonstration of pyomyositis on CT or MR.
