Article Synopsis
  • The study examined insecticide resistance in Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes in coastal Côte d'Ivoire, highlighting a concern for malaria control efforts due to insufficient resistance data.
  • Between 2018 and 2020, researchers analyzed mosquito populations in three health districts, finding that Anopheles coluzzii was the predominant species and demonstrating strong resistance to pyrethroids, with mortality rates below 98% even at high doses.
  • Additionally, specific genetic mutations related to resistance were identified, revealing high prevalence of kdr 995F and varying frequencies of Ace-1 280S, indicating a complex resistance profile that emphasizes the need for updated vector control strategies.

In Côte d'Ivoire, there is a high intensity of pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors which may threaten successful vector control. Molecular studies of the target site mutation in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) show that the gene frequencies of these mutations are high, widely spread across Côte d'Ivoire, and even fixed in some areas. To further characterize insecticide resistance in Côte d'Ivoire beyond target site mutations, the metabolic resistance mechanism was explored.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) during the first year of the pandemic, focusing on hospitals in Bangladesh, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Lebanon, Madagascar, and Mali.
  • Overall, 1,096 patients were studied, with a median age of 49 and a clinical severity rate of 12.3%, indicating significant variations in severity across countries, particularly higher in Guinea.
  • Key findings revealed that older age and chronic conditions like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes were major factors increasing the severity of COVID-19 in these populations, especially affecting younger individuals with underlying health issues.

Resistance to pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticides in the malaria vector () is conferred by a variety of genetic mutations, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and copy number variants (CNVs). Knowledge of the distribution of these mutations in mosquito populations is a prerequisite for establishing better strategies for their management. In this study, a total of 755 () from southern Côte d'Ivoire were exposed to deltamethrin or pirimiphos-methyl insecticides and were screened to assess the distribution of SNPs and CNVs known or believed to confer resistance to one or other of the insecticide classes.

Background: Entomological surveillance provides critical information on vectors for appropriate malaria vector control and strategic decision-making. The widely documented insecticide resistance of malaria vectors in Côte d'Ivoire requires that any vector control intervention deployment be driven by entomological data to optimize its effectiveness and appropriate resource allocations. To achieve this goal, this study documents the results of monthly vector surveillance and insecticide susceptibility tests conducted in 2019 and a review of all previous entomological monitoring data used to guide vector control decision making.

Introduction: Right ventricular dysfunction is a cause of morbidity and mortality after surgical correction of tetralogy of Fallot. The transatrial-transpulmonary approach allows preservation of right ventricular function.

Aim: To report the immediate and long-term results of surgical treatment of tetralogy of Fallot using the transatrial-transpulmonary approach.

Introduction: The detection of hypertension in African countries ranges from 15 to 40%, so more than half of hypertensive people are unaware of their condition. In Côte d’Ivoire, very little work on the detection of hypertension exists.

Purpose Of Research: The objective was to analyze the detection and control of hypertension in the Ivorian peri-urban environment.

Background: Hypertension is one of the major factors for high mortality of adults in Africa. However, complications occur at lower values than those previously classified as hypertension. Thus, prehypertension is considered as a new category of hypertension and a major risk factor for developing clinical hypertension relative to those with normotension, it has been linked with increased future risk of hypertension as well as cardiovascular diseases.

Introduction: Cessation of care for financial reasons is an indicator of the affordability of care.

Objective: The objective of this work was to identify the determinants of the renunciation of care for financial reasons among women in a peri-urban area of Abidjan.

Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2019 among women aged 18 years and over in Anonkoi 3 in the north of Abidjan.

Introduction: Prevalence of abdominal obesity dramatically increases both in developed countries and in developing countries. In several regions in Africa, obesity (especially abdominal) is seen as a sign of affluence, dignity and respect. The objective of this study was to determine prevalence of abdominal obesity and seek some factors associated in a peri-urban population of West Africa.

Background: Côte d'Ivoire's current health care financing system results from successive reforms undertaken with government funding and international support. The country is moving towards a national compulsory health insurance scheme. This context offered an opportunity to study additional features of health insurance's potential market in Sub-Sahara Africa developing economy.

Importance: Multiple techniques for a more secure and stable anchoring of the foot of a total ossicular replacement prosthesis (TORP) on the footplate have been proposed. To address this issue, a technique was developed that fits a cartilage shoe into the oval niche to guide the base of the prosthesis into a preformed central perforation.

Objective: To evaluate the long-term results of the cartilage shoe technique used to anchor a titanium TORP on the stapes footplate in patients after type III tympanoplasty.

The objective of the study is to evaluate the long term results of ossiculoplasty using the clip titanium partial ossicular replacement prosthesis. This study retrospectively reviews the partial ossiculoplasty conducted using clip titanium partial ossicular replacement prosthesis at a tertiary referral center. Audiometric outcomes and intraoperative findings were postoperatively measured from revision surgery of 47 ears (20 women, 27 men, mean age 43 years) averaging 6.

Background: Correct treatment of potentially life-threatening illnesses (PLTIs) in children under 5 years, such as malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea, can substantially reduce mortality. The Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) strategy has been shown to improve treatment of child illnesses, but multiple studies have shown that gaps in health worker performance remain after training. To better understand factors related to health worker performance, we analyzed 9,330 patient consultations in Benin from 2001-2002, after training one of the first cohorts of 32 health workers in IMCI.

Objective: Training health workers to use Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) guidelines can improve care for ill children in outpatient settings in developing countries. However, even after IMCI training, important performance gaps exist. One potential reason is that the effect of training can rapidly wane.
