Effect of LLLT on endothelial cells culture.

Growth factors as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), produced by the endothelial cells, take an essential part in pathological and physiological angiogenesis. The possibility of angiogenesis modulation by application of laser radiation may contribute to the improvement of its use in this process. Thus, the aim of the study was to investigate the influence of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the proliferation of endothelial cells, secretion of VEGF-A and presence of soluble VEGF receptors (sVEGFR-1 and sVEGFR-2) in the medium after in vitro culture.

Life satisfaction and social support received by women in the perinatal period.

Background: Birth of a baby has a big impact on women's lives. The presence and help of loved ones favours wellbeing, health, coping with difficult situations. The aim of this study was to determine whether women's satisfaction with life changes during pregnancy and after delivery, and to identify correlates of life satisfaction.

Comparison of oxidative stress/DNA damage in semen and blood of fertile and infertile men.

Abnormal spermatozoa frequently display typical features of oxidative stress, i.e. excessive level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and depleted antioxidant capacity.

Protein C, protein S, and thrombomodulin in amniotic fluid. A preliminary study.

Objectives: The main components of protein C anticoagulant system are protein C (PC), protein S (PS) and thrombomodulin (TM); the system plays a protective role in pregnancy, mainly because it prevents the utero-placental circulation from local thrombosis. It is unknown whether the protein C anticoagulant pathway exists in amniotic fluid. The aim of the present study is to find out whether these three components are present in amniotic fluid.

[Ectopic cervical pregnancy terminating in the birth of a live 1800 g infant].

We present here a case of ectopic cervical pregnancy terminated in the birth of a live 1800 g infant, whose further development takes normal course. Wrong evaluation of the place of the developing pregnancy resulted in its growth up to 34th week. Finally, the placement of pregnancy was established after delivering the woman with a caesarean section, on the basis of macro and microscopic evaluation of the removed uterus.

High levels of mitochondrial DNA heteroplasmy in single hair roots: reanalysis and revision.

The present study demonstrates a reinvestigation of the mitochondrial DNA sequence heteroplasmy, which was previously found by the use of nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique in single hairs of 13 individuals. The direct PCR approach was used for the amplification of mitochondrial DNA and a phylogenetic analysis was applied to both data sets for the verification of the authenticity of sequences. The comparative analysis of the sequencing results obtained from the same hair DNA extracts - but using two different techniques - shows that direct mitochondrial DNA amplification results in a considerably lower number of mixed positions.

[Evaluation of the coexistence of chlamydia trachomatis symptoms and antispermatozoonal antibodies in sperm of men treated for infertility].

Introduction: Marital infertility has become an increasing problem of contemporary medicine. It is acknowledged that the responsibility for this fact is placed in half with the male factor. To a great degree it is caused by existence of male genitals inflammatory processes.

[Effectiveness of immunoprophylaxis in negative Rhesus factor].

In the research an evaluation was made of the effectiveness of immunoprophylaxis applied in fetomaternal incompatibility in the range of antigen D. Material was based on patients who were delivered in the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz in the years 1981-1999. In that period of time there were 46,398 deliveries.

The level of typical biomarker of oxidative stress 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine is higher in uterine myomas than in control tissues and correlates with the size of the tumor.

The results of this work show a higher level of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG), a typical biomarker of oxidative stress, in uterine myoma tissues than in their respective tumor-free tissues. The level of this modified base was elevated in uterine tissues of premenopausal women when compared with postmenopausal ones. We have also found the correlation between the size of the tumor and the amount of 8-OH-dG.

[The evaluation of efficiency of PGE 1 (alprostadil) during intracavernous injection in the treatment of erectile dysfunctions].

We have investigated the influence of PGE1 (alprostandil--"Prostavasin"--Schwarz Pharma company) on the erection in the group of 34 men with erectile disfunction (28 with and 6 without diabetes mellitus) treated in period from 1996 to 1998. Other diseases were excluded in all patients. The concentrations of FSH, LH, T, PRL, T3 and T4 were in normal range.

[Relationship between erythropoietin activity in fetal blood and Liley's curve and bilirubin concentration in amniotic fluid in serologic conflict].

Authors analysed concentration of erythropoietin (EPO) in fetal blood from pregnancies complicated by serologic conflict. There was conducted the trial of settle correlation between EPO activity in fetal blood and bilirubin concentration in amniotic fluid and its optical density ratio obtained by amniopuncture in the same pregnancies.

[A simple method for management and treatment results of pregnant women with isthmo-cervical insufficiency].

A simple way of management of patients treated for isthmo-cervical insufficiency in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz in the years 1980-1990 was subjected to own assessment. During this period the treatment was given to 684 pregnant patients with diagnosed isthmo-cervical insufficiency, laying a circumferential suture onto the cervix after Hervet, between 17 and 33 weeks of pregnancy. The accepted management after the procedure was limited to bed rest and administration of analgesic and spasmolytic drugs.

[Fertility of women after surgical intervention on organs of reproduction].

The research included 114 female patients treated at the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the years 1986-1991. Information was based on a questionnaire, with 40 (35%) answers. Basic parameters of fertility were evaluated in women, who underwent surgical intervention on reproductive organs and they were discussed in connection with other conditioning.

[Pharmacokinetic investigations of verapamil used as a concomitant drug in treatment of premature labor].

The study carried out on 35 pregnant women, who were threatened with fenoterol and verapamil by premature delivery. The pharmacokinetics of verapamil have been examined after single dose and in steady state using drug in a dose of 2 x 80 mg/day (15 women) and 3 x 40 mg/day (8 women). Verapamil in a dose of 2 x 80 mg/day induced average steady state concentration in range of 40.

[Epiphysiolysis of the femur head in hypogonadism of pituitary origin].

A case of a twenty years old male patient with unilateral slipped upper femoral epiphysis has been presented. An accompanying pituitary hypogonadism was revealed on physical examination and laboratory tests. Reports from literature of hormone-related epiphyseolysis have been discussed.
