The peritoneal cavity has been extensively used as a laboratory model of inflammation in many species, including the teleost fish. Although, the peritoneal cavity of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) was previously shown to contain a resident population of leukocytes, closer information about their exact composition and their functional response to pathogens is still missing. In the presented work, flow cytometric analysis using monoclonal antibodies was performed to characterize this cell population and evaluate its traffic during the first 72 h after antigenic stimulation and infection with Aeromonas salmonicida.

The proline-rich protein 13 (PRR13) is reported to be a key regulator of the resistance to cytostatica by decreasing the copy number of the proapoptotic gene thrombospondin-1. We isolated and characterized the complete PRR13 gene sequence of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The gene comprises four exons and three introns, the latter of comparatively short lengths (100-811 bp).

Impairment of immune function in aquatic animals has been proposed as a possible consequence of low-level contamination of surface waters with anthropogenic substances such as through the discharge of wastewater into rivers, lakes, and oceans. The study at hand investigated the effects of chronic (32 weeks) exposure to sewage treatment plant (STP) effluent on the prevalence and distribution of different leucocyte populations in spleen samples of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). To simulate an infection, fish were injected intraperitoneally (ip) with inactivated Aeromonas salmonicida salmonicida, 6 weeks prior to the termination of the experiment.

The characterisation of a monoclonal antibody (mab 45) reacting with phagocytic leucocytes isolated from blood and spleen of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) is described. The surface marker labelled by this mab is expressed at relative low levels on the membrane of large, nearly nongranulated trout leucocytes, and having the typical morphology of monocytes in flow cytometry (Kfoury et al., 1999, Fish Pathology, 34, 1-6).
