Objectives: The aim of our study was to characterize the neurological symptoms in Bulgarian patients with Wilson disease (WD), to investigate genotype-phenotype correlations, and to test whether there are differences in phenotype between patients of different ethnic origin.

Patients And Methods: A total of 126 Bulgarian patients with WD were included in the study. Detailed history, physical and neurological examination, laboratory investigation of copper metabolism, slit-lamp examination, abdominal ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging/computed tomography of the brain, molecular genetic testing, and statistical analysis were performed.

The causes of gastrointestinal bleedings was assessed by fiber gastroscopy, rectoromanoscopy and fiber colonoscopy. The most frequent causes of bleedings from the upper gastrointestinal tract are gastric and duodenal ulcers, erosive hemorrhagic gastritis, gastric cancer, liver cirrhosis with bleeding from varicose veins, polyps, diverticuli, Mallory-Weiss syndrome, etc. The most frequent causes of bleedings from the lower gastrointestinal tract are hemorrhoids, anal fissures, colonic polyps, chronic ulcerohemorrhagic colitis, rectal carcinoma, etc.

The data available in the literature on the incidence of duodenogastric reflux and its relation with diseases of the stomach and duodenum are controversial. A study was performed based on the results of 4256 primary endoscopies of the stomach and duodenum: 3673 in nonoperated patients and 583 in patients having undergone vagotomy and resection. For a two year period 79 patients were examined by fiber colonoscopy and X-ray examination of the colon. The purpose of the study is to find out the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of the methods for the diagnosis of the most frequent diseases of the colon. The results allow the conclusion that fiber colonoscopy is the method of choice in the diagnosis of the neoplasms and the inflammatory diseases of the colon.
