Previously, we and others reported a rapid and dramatic increase in brain prostanoids (PG), including prostaglandins, prostacyclins, and thromboxanes, under ischemia that is traditionally explained through the activation of esterified arachidonic acid (20:4n6) release by phospholipases as a substrate for cyclooxygenases (COX). However, the availability of another required COX substrate, oxygen, has not been considered in this mechanism. To address this mechanism for PG upregulation through oxygen availability, we analyzed mouse brain PG, free 20:4n6, and oxygen levels at different time points after ischemic onset using head-focused microwave irradiation (MW) to inactivate enzymes in situ before craniotomy.

Background And Aim: We have previously reported that histamine H receptor antagonists facilitate electroacupuncture (EA) analgesia in experimental animals. In this pilot study, we sought to determine whether the histamine H receptor antagonist dexchlorpheniramine (DCPA) facilitates EA analgesia in healthy human subjects.

Experimental Procedure: Forty healthy subjects aged 20-30 years were randomly allocated to 1 of 4 groups: (1) sham EA at acupoints Zusanli (ST36) and Yanglingquan (GB34) (sham EA; n = 10); (2) EA at ST36 and GB34 (n = 10); (3) EA at ST36 and GB34 plus low-dose DCPA (2 mg, n = 10); (4) EA at ST36 and GB34 plus high-dose DCPA (4 mg, n = 10).

Background: Acupuncture or electroacupuncture (EA) appears to be a potential treatment in acute clinical traumatic brain injury (TBI); however, it remains uncertain whether acupuncture affects post-TBI histone deacetylase (HDAC) expression or impacts other biochemical/neurobiological events.

Materials And Methods: We used behavioral testing, Western blot, and immunohistochemistry analysis to evaluate the cellular and molecular effects of EA at LI4 and LI11 in both weight drop-impact acceleration (WD)- and controlled cortical impact (CCI)-induced TBI models.

Results: Both WD- and CCI-induced TBI caused behavioral dysfunction, increased cortical levels of HDAC1 and HDAC3 isoforms, activated microglia and astrocytes, and decreased cortical levels of BDNF as well as its downstream mediators phosphorylated-Akt and phosphorylated-GSK-3β.

Mcy protein, isolated from the fruits of Momordica cymbalaria, was shown to have antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic activities along with renal as well as hepatoprotective activities in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Mcy protein was shown to have insulin-like structure and/or function and/or insulin secretagogue activity. Hence, the present study was conducted to elucidate the molecular mechanism whereby Mcy protein elicits its therapeutic role and also to know whether the Mcy protein has any structural and functional similarity with insulin.

Prevention of viral-induced respiratory disease begins with an understanding of the factors that increase or decrease susceptibility to viral infection. The primary receptor for most adenoviruses is the coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR), a cell-cell adhesion protein normally localized at the basolateral surface of polarized epithelia and involved in neutrophil transepithelial migration. Recently, an alternate isoform of CAR, CAREx8, has been identified at the apical surface of polarized airway epithelia and is implicated in viral infection from the apical surface.

The Coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAR) is an essential cellular protein that is involved in cell-cell adhesion, protein trafficking, and viral infection. The major isoform of CAR is selectively sorted to the basolateral membrane of polarized epithelial cells where it co-localizes with the cellular scaffolding protein membrane-associated guanylate kinase with inverted domain structure-1 (MAGI-1). This paper describes a method for using commercial software Automate with a stream-selector valve capable of sampling container solutions from within an environmental chamber. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between changes in emulsion globule size distributions and container uptake of lipid emulsions in total nutrient admixtures.

Methods: A total nutrient admixture was prepared from a commercial lipid emulsion, 20% ClinOleic®, separated into glass (borosilicate) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) plastic containers, and then stored at ambient conditions for approximately 24 h. The large globule size distribution was monitored continuously for both containers, and the quantity of triglycerides associated with both containers was measured by liquid chromatography.

Background: Although studies of immigrant Asian Indians in other countries show high rates of diabetes (DM), metabolic syndrome (MetS), and cardiovascular disease (CVD), no randomized, population-based studies of this rapidly growing ethnic group exist in the US.

Methods: The sample comprised 1038 randomly selected Asian Indian immigrants, aged 18 years and older at seven US sites. Prevalence of diabetes and MetS (age-adjusted and sex-adjusted means) was estimated and ANOVA was used to calculate gender and group differences (normoglycemia/impaired fasting glucose/diabetes) for CVD risk factors.

Individuals of Asian Indian descent have significantly higher cardiovascular event rates as compared with other ethnic groups. The authors investigated the prevalence of metabolic disorders linked to coronary artery disease in an Asian Indian male population compared with non-Asian Indian males. Standard lipid measurements did not discriminate between groups, and the Asian Indian group exhibited less of the high coronary artery disease risk small low-density lipoprotein trait.

Intravenous thrombolytic therapy has become standard treatment for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We describe three patients with long-standing seropositive rheumatoid arthritis (RA) on chronic corticosteroid therapy who experienced very early (1-6 h) mortality after the use of intravenous thrombolytic therapy for the treatment of AMI. All three patients likely experienced electromechanical dissociation (EMD).
