Article Synopsis
  • A new method is introduced to reduce unwanted side reactions in gold-sensing systems that rely on alkyne activation.
  • By increasing steric strain in the area where the reaction occurs, the process involving gold ions is sped up, minimizing side reactions.
  • This leads to probes with great sensitivity and selectivity for gold, and it also enables live cell imaging of gold species using a FRET technique.

Amidothiourea linked acridinedione derivatives selectively detect Hg(2+) in unbuffered aqueous solution under broad pH range with both single- and two-photon excitation. The observed linear fluorescence intensity change allows the quantitative detection of Hg(2+) in the concentration range of 22 nM-0.33 μM with the lower detection limit of 2 nM.

A novel N-benzamidobisthiourea derivative (1) was synthesized. Tuning of its emission from the locally excited (LE) state to the charge transfer (CT) state was observed specifically for fluoride ion.
