The dust plume tracks from the Middle East and Eastern Africa to the Indian subcontinent have an impact on the atmospheric and ocean biogeochemistry of the Arabian Sea (AS). Here, we present the impact of dust on net primary productivity (NPP) over the AS using satellite-based observation and model simulation. Seasonal episodes and long-term trends in dust optical depth (DOD), dust mass flux (DMF) and dust deposition flux (DDF) from 2007 to 2020 are quantified.

A continuing increase in droughts/floods in Asian monsoon regions and worsening air quality due to aerosols are the two biggest threats to the health and well being of over 60% of the world's population. This study focuses on in-situ observations of atmospheric aerosols and their impact on shortwave direct aerosol radiative forcing (SDARF) during the southwest monsoon season (June-September) from 2015 to 2020 over a semi-arid station in Southern India. The Standardized precipitation index (SPI) is used to identify the droughts and normal monsoon years.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) as a pandemic due to its widespread global infection. This has resulted in lockdown under different phases in many nations, including India, around the globe. In the present study, we report the impact of aerosols on surface ozone in the context of pre-lockdown (01 - 24th March 2020 (PLD)), lockdown phase1 (25th March to 14th April 2020 (LDP1)), and lockdown phase 2 (15th April to 03 May 2020 (LDP2)) on clear days at a semi-arid site, Anantapur in southern India using both in situ observations and model simulations.

Surface ozone is mainly produced by photochemical reactions involving various anthropogenic pollutants, whose emissions are increasing rapidly in India due to fast-growing anthropogenic activities. This study estimates the losses of wheat and rice crop yields using surface ozone observations from a group of 17 sites, for the first time, covering different parts of India. We used the mean ozone for 7 h during the day (M7) and accumulated ozone over a threshold of 40 ppbv (AOT40) metrics for the calculation of crop losses for the northern, eastern, western and southern regions of India.
