Feline obesity is a common and preventable disease, posing a myriad of health risks and detriments. Specially formulated diets and restricted feeding may serve as an intervention strategy to promote weight loss and improve feline health. In this study, our objective was to determine the effects of restricted feeding and weight loss on body composition, voluntary physical activity, blood hormones and metabolites, and fecal microbiota of overweight cats.

Background: Pulses are an attractive alternative protein source for all mammals; however, recent reports suggest that these ingredients may be related to developing dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs.

Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to quantify the effects of dietary pulse intake by adult dogs on cardiac function using echocardiographic measurements and cardiac biomarkers N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and cardiac troponin I (cTnI). Second, to investigate the effects of pulse consumption on plasma sulfur amino acid (SAA) concentrations as pulses are generally low in SAA and may limit taurine synthesis.

Canine obesity negatively influences health and well-being, but can be managed by altering diet composition and caloric intake. Restricted feeding, dietary intervention, and consequent weight loss may be used to improve health and modify gastrointestinal microbiota. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of restricted feeding of specially formulated foods on weight loss, body composition, voluntary physical activity, serum hormones and oxidative stress markers, and fecal metabolites and microbiota populations of obese dogs.

Introduction: Morel-Lavallée lesions (MLLs) are a post-traumatic degloving injury which the superficial fascia and skin are separated from the deep fascia through shearing forces. This process leads to the development of a potential space in which blood products and necrotic material can collect, potentially resulting in abscesses, cellulitis, or osteomyelitis. Most of these cases occur at the greater trochanter, gluteal musculature, proximal femur, and around the knee.

The scalability and stability of molecular qubits deposited on surfaces is a crucial step for incorporating them into upcoming electronic devices. Herein, we report on the preparation and characterisation of a molecular quantum bit, copper(ii)dibenzoylmethane [Cu(dbm)], deposited by a modified Langmuir-Schaefer (LS) technique onto a graphene-based substrate. A double LS deposition was used for the preparation of a few-layer-graphene (FLG) on a Si/SiO substrate with subsequent deposition of the molecules.

Few-layer MoS films stay at the forefront of current research of two-dimensional materials. At present, continuous MoS films are prepared by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques. Herein, we present a cost-effective fabrication of the large-area spatially uniform films of few-layer MoS flakes using a modified Langmuir-Schaefer technique.

Background: Investigations of rabid animals that cross provincial/territorial boundaries are resource intensive and complex because of their multi-jurisdictional and multi-sectoral nature.

Objective: To describe the multi-jurisdictional responses to two unrelated rabid puppies originating from Nunavut.

Methods: A descriptive summary of the investigations following the identification of a rabid puppy in Alberta (August 2013) and another in Saskatchewan (December 2014).

A 4-year-old Morgan stallion was presented with a 9-week history of diarrhea. Biopsy of nodules in the rectal mucosa yielded a diagnosis of eosinophilic enterocolitis. Treatment with steroids was instituted and the feces firmed within 2 days.

Monomeric DNA and RNA polymerases contain a number of conserved motifs. By means of random and oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis the point mutants of bacteriophage T7 RNA polymerase containing the amino acid substitutions in motif B which is the part of the active site were obtained. The kinetic properties of the mutants were studied.

Random mutagenesis of the bacteriophage T7 gene 1 was used to delineate the functionally important amino acids residues of its product--T7 RNA polymerase. A two-plasmid system has been constructed for the phenotypic selection of the mutants. Nine mutants were isolated; the RNA polymerase with Tyr-639----Asp substitution has been shown to be completely inactive.

To express HIV-1 reverse transcriptase in E. coli a number of genetic constructions containing reverse transcriptase and virus protease nucleotide sequences was obtained. The products of expression were characterized; monoclonal antibodies to reverse transcriptase were produced.

The monoclonal antibodies to DNA-dependent RNA-polymerase of bacteriophage T7 have been obtained. Twenty of the obtained 500 clones have inhibited the enzyme activity. Three specificity groups were identified for seven of the clones supporting their affinity for different antigenic determinants.

The present study on canine left ventricles showed that Emax which we previously proposed as a good index of both ventricular contractility and its pumping capability, decreased from 2.06 to 1.38 kPa/ml (15.

To quantitatively understand how the carotid sinus baroreceptor reflex modifies the Starling curve (i.e., the aortic flow (AF)-mean right atrial pressure (MRAP) relationship), experiments were performed in closed-chest, naturally breathing, and anesthetized dogs before and after vagotomy.
