Valence and arousal of words in visual and conceptual interference control efficiency.

Cognitive control efficiency is susceptible to the emotional state of an individual. The aim of the current experiment was to search for the role of valence and arousal of emotion-laden words in a performance efficiency of a modified emotional Stroop task (EST) combined with the flanker task. Both paradigms allow for the measurement of the interference control, but interference appears on different stages of stimulus processing.

Perinatal outcomes in gestational diabetes in relation to ethnicity in the Netherlands.

Background: The influence of ethnicity in women with gestational diabetes in relation to maternal, pregnancy and neonatal outcome is not well defined.

Aim: To compare the perinatal outcome in women with gestational diabetes between different ethnic groups reflecting the multi-ethnic population in the Netherlands.

Methods: Patients with gestational diabetes (n = 388) who visited the multidisciplinary outpatient clinic for Diabetes Care and Obstetrics of the Sint Franciscus Gasthuis in Rotterdam between 2010 and 2013 were included.

Eating habits of east Asian people and transmission of taeniasis.

In order to understand the role of raw meat and viscera eating habits in the transmission of taeniasis in Asian countries, 1502 infected aborigines in ten mountainous districts/towns of six counties in Taiwan, 58 infected persons in two villages on Cheju Island, Korea, and 97 cases in Ambarita District on Samosir Island, North Sumatra, Indonesia were studied during the field surveys. All infected Taiwan aborigines had the habit of eating raw meat and viscera of wild and/or domestic animals. Among these aborigines, 73% ate wild boar, 66% flying squirrel, 65% wild goat, 56% muntjac, 49% wild rats, 46% monkey, 38% hare, 20% civet-cats, 18% weasel, 17% pheasant, 14% squirrel, 4% grouse, 1% deer, 1% snake, less than 1% bamboo partridge, less than 1% frog, less than 1% bear, less than 1% dog, and less than 1% fox.

Taeniasis in Indonesia with special reference to Samosir Island, north Sumatra.

In Indonesia, taeniasis is endemic on the islands of Bali, Irian Jaya and Sumatra. The Balinese eat pork or beef raw in a dish called "lawar". Natives of Irian Jaya also have a custom of preparing and consuming raw pork.

Experimental infection of Indonesia Taenia (Samosir strain) in domestic animals.

Three 58-day old Small-Ear-Miniature (SEM) pigs, six 36-day old Landrace-Small-Ear-Miniature (L-SEM) pigs, and two 5-day old Holstein calves were each fed 3000 or 30,000 Indonesia Taenia (Samosir strain) eggs and sacrificed 27-195 days after inoculation. A total of 4922 cysticerci were recovered only from the livers of the three SEM pigs (1977 cysticerci) and six L-SEM pigs (2945 cysticerci). The infection rate in pigs was 100%.

First case of human Thelaziasis in Indonesia.

The thread-like worms removed from the right eye of a 10 month-old boy in North Sumatra were shown to be female Thelazia callipaeda, by the shape of the buccal capsule and the position of the vulva. This is the first report of human infection of Thelazia callipaeda in Indonesia.

Evaluation of a new antihypertensive agent. Minoxidil.

Minoxidil is a potent, long-acting, orally effective vasodilator that recently became available for general use in the United States. It is given with a diuretic and a beta-blocking drug to treat severe hypertension that cannot be controlled by conventional therapy. Fluid retention and hypertrichosis are the most common adverse reactions.

Evaluation of a new uricosuric diuretic--ticrynafen.

Ticrynafen is an orally administered diuretic that is similar to the thiazides in its therapeutic actions, but unlike the thiazides, it increases urate excretion and lowers serum uric acid levels. Ticrynafen is useful in the treatment of hypertension and in selected cases of chronic congestive heart failure. At present, it appears to be indicated primarily in patients with these disorders who have a history of gout.

Timolol in the treatment of open angle glaucoma.

Timolol maleate is the first beta-adrenergic-blocking drug available in the United States for topical therapy in open angle glaucoma. It may be used alone for initial therapy in selected patients or with other antiglaucoma drugs in patients requiring additional control. It should be tried, before resorting to surgery, when traditional maximal medical therapy has failed or is not tolerated.

Evaluation of a new antidiuretic agent, desmopressin acetate (DDAVP).

Desmopressin acetate is a synthetic vasopressin analogue administered by the intranasal route. It is long-acting and well tolerated and may be the agent of choice for treating central diabetes insipidus.

Evaluation of a new antihypertensive agent: prazosin hydrochloride (Minipress).

Prazosin hydrochloride is an orally administered vasodilator that recently became available for the treatment of hypertension. It causes less tachycardia than hydralazine but may produce orthostatic hypotension, particularly after the initial dose. The role of prazosin in therapy is limited because of the risk of a first-dose syncopal reaction, and it appears to be indicated primarily in patients who cannot tolerate hydralazine hydrochloride or sympathetic depressant drugs.

Lactulose (cephulac) in portosystemic encephalopathy.

Lactulose is a synthetic disaccharide that lowers elevated blood ammonia levels and improves symptoms in patients with portosystemic encephalopathy. It is generally well tolerated and appears to be a suitable alternative to neomycin sulfate for maintenance therapy to prevent recurrent attacks and to improve protein tolerance.

Evaluation of clonidine hydrochloride (Catapres). A new antihypertensive agent.

Clonidine hydrochloride is a new antihypertensive agent with a primary site of action in the central nervous system. When administered with a diuretic, it is effective for long-term therapy and may be particularly useful in patients with moderately severe hypertension. Clonidine is comparable to methyldopa in efficacy but may cause side-effects more frequently.
