Membrane external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (MECSELs) represent a cutting-edge approach in pushing the performance boundaries of vertically emitting semiconductor lasers. The fundamental concept of employing an extremely thin gain membrane, spanning from hundreds of nanometers to a few micrometers in thickness and sandwiched between transparent heat spreaders, introduces novel opportunities through uniform double-sided optical pumping and enhanced heat dissipation from the active region. Additionally, these advantages of MECSELs facilitate more intricate band gap engineering possibilities for the active region by integrating multiple types of quantum wells (QWs) into a single laser gain structure.

To protect future high-tech metal demand, a selective and efficient recovery method for tantalum from a tantalum-rich e-waste component sample was developed. Ultrasound-assisted digestion of the component sample was optimized, and the highest dissolution rate was achieved using a mixture of 8 mol/L HSO and HF at a temperature of 60 °C. The determined amount of tantalum was as high as 11 000 ± 1000 mg/kg, which results in a high potential for recyclable tantalum.

Protein fouling is a critical issue in the development of electrochemical sensors for medical applications, as it can significantly impact their sensitivity, stability, and reliability. COVID-19 diagnostics was quickly ramped up worldwide early 2020 based on the detection of viral RNA. However, based on the scientific knowledge for pre-existing coronaviruses, it was expected that the SARS-CoV-2 RNA will be detected from symptomatic and at significant rates also from asymptomatic individuals due to persistence of non-infectious RNA. To increase the efficacy of diagnostics, surveillance, screening and pandemic control, rapid methods, such as antigen tests, are needed for decentralized testing and to assess infectiousness.

To associate specimens identified by molecular characters to other biological knowledge, we need reference sequences annotated by Linnaean taxonomy. In this study, we (1) report the creation of a comprehensive reference library of DNA barcodes for the arthropods of an entire country (Finland), (2) publish this library, and (3) deliver a new identification tool for insects and spiders, as based on this resource. The reference library contains mtDNA COI barcodes for 11,275 (43%) of 26,437 arthropod species known from Finland, including 10,811 (45%) of 23,956 insect species.
