Recurrent uterine leiomyosarcoma: an atypical location.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a malignant tumor of smooth muscle cells and comprises 5-24% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Although the most frequent symptoms are vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain, the symptoms are generally associated with dimensions and localization of the tumor. The current study presents a case of uterine leiomyosarcoma that metastasized to the rectus abdominis muscle, which has only been previously reported in two cases in the literature.

Thoracic MRI evaluation of sarcoidosis in children.

Background: Childhood sarcoidosis is a very rare granulomatous disorder with an unknown etiology. Stage 1 disease is the most common whereas stages 2, 3, and 0 are rare in children.

Acquired FVIII and FIX Inhibitors after Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Acquired hemophilia is a relatively rare clinical presentation, and most cases present with acquired FVIII inhibitor. The co-occurrence of inhibitors to multiple coagulation factors is uncommon. These autoantibodies may induce spontaneous life-threatening bleeding in patients who have had no previous bleeding disorder.

Focused screening to identify new adenosine kinase inhibitors.

Adenosine kinase (AdK) is a key player in controlling intra- and extracellular concentrations of the signaling molecule adenosine. Extensive evidence points to an important role of AdK in several diseases, and suggests that AdK inhibition might be a promising therapeutic strategy. The development of a new AdK assay and subsequent screening of part of our focused compound library led to the identification of 12 hit compounds (hit rate of 6%) representing six new classes of non-nucleoside human AdK inhibitors.

Early severe anemia as the first sign of cystic fibrosis.

Unlabelled: Severe anemia is reported to occur rarely in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This study aimed to determine the factors associated with early severe anemia in infants with CF. This study included 231 infants with CF from 3 pediatric CF centers ten year period that were retrospectively reviewed in terms of severe anemia as the first sign of CF.

Similarities and differences in affinity and binding modes of tricyclic pyrimido- and pyrazinoxanthines at human and rat adenosine receptors.

A new series of 32 pyrimido- and 5 tetrahydropyrazino[2,1-f]purinediones was obtained and evaluated for their adenosine receptors (ARs) affinities. The 1,3-dibutyl derivative of 9-(4-(2-(dimethylamino)ethoxy)phenyl)-6,7,8,9-tetrahydropyrimido[1,2-f]purine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione was found to be the most potent A1 AR antagonist of the present series, showing selectivity over the other AR subtypes. The structure-activity for the obtained purinediones was established.

Objective: Acute pulmonary embolism (APE) is a very common disease that must be diagnosed and treated quickly and accurately to reduce significant morbidity and mortality rates. Acute pulmonary embolism is associated with numerous electrocardiographic (ECG) changes including prolonged QT interval with global T-wave inversion. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between the T-wave peak-to-end interval and diagnosis of APE, which has never been investigated in the literature.

Recent Declines in Infant and Neonatal Mortality in Turkey from 2007 to 2012: Impact of Improvements in Health Policies.

Background: Infant mortality rate (IMR) and neonatal mortality rate (NMR) are accepted as good indicators to measure the health status of a nation. This report describes recent declines in IMR and NMR in Turkey.

Methods: Data on infants who died before 12 months of life were obtained from the Infant Mortality Monitoring System of Ministry of Health of Turkey between 2007 and 2012.

Histopathology of ipsilateral and contralateral ovaries and plasma interleukin 6 levels after unilateral ovarian torsion.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the time-dependent histopathologic changes in both ovaries and to determine the time-dependent levels of plasma interleukin 6 (IL-6) after unilateral ovarian torsion.

Materials And Methods: An experimental animal study included 48 female Sprague-Dawley rats which were distributed to six groups: control group (Group 1), sham-operated control group (Group 2), and four unilateral ovarian torsion groups with torsion duration of three, six, 12, and 24 hours (Group 3, 4, 5, and 6, respectively). Histopathologic criteria (follicular degeneration, vascular congestion, hemorrhage, inflammatory cell infiltration, and total tissue damage score) were evaluated in both ovaries, and plasma IL-6 levels were measured.

Association of the BsmI, ApaI, TaqI, Tru9I and FokI Polymorphisms of the Vitamin D Receptor Gene with Nephrolithiasis in the Turkish Population.

Complementary Feeding Practices of Children Aged 12-23 Months in Turkey.

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the breastfeeding and complementary feeding attitudes and practices of women with children aged 12-23 months in three different regions in Turkey.

Methods: From 12 geographical regions (Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics - NUTS 1), 3 regions were selected depending on the Turkish Demographic Health Survey 2003 (TDHS) results of nutritional status of children. Then, a weighted, multistage, stratified cluster sampling was used.

Prognostic Factors in Adult Granulosa Cell Tumor: A Long Follow-Up at a Single Center.

Objective: In this study, we aimed to demonstrate characteristics, recurrence rates, survival numbers, and factors associated with survival of patients with adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT) from a single institution. Our secondary goal was to evaluate the necessity of staging surgery and the importance of a comprehensive lymphadenectomy in these patients.

Methods: The data of 158 patients in our institution who were diagnosed with AGCT between 1988 and 2013 were evaluated.

Expression profile of interferon tau-stimulated genes in ovine peripheral blood leukocytes during embryonic death.

Early and efficient detection of embryonic death (ED) has a valuable impact as important as early pregnancy diagnosis in ruminants. Among early pregnancy diagnosis methods, detection of the expression of interferon tau-stimulated genes (ISGs) in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs) is well documented in cows and ewes. Therefore, we hypothesized that the expression profile of ISGs in PBLs might also be useful for detecting ED in these animals.

Infections of Larval Stages of Dicrocoelium dendriticum and Brachylaima sp. in Brown Garden Snail, Helix aspersa, in Turkey.

The aim of this study was to determine the presence and prevalence of larval stages of Dicrocoelium dendriticum and Brachylaima sp. in the first intermediate host, a species of land snail, Helix aspersa, in Turkey. A total of 211 snails were collected in April-May 2014 from pastures in Mersin District.

Management of cervical cancer during pregnancy.

Cervical cancer (CC) is the most common gynaecological cancer during pregnancy. The rarity of the disease and lack of randomised control studies have prevented the establishment of treatment guidelines. The management of CC mainly follows the guidelines for the non-pregnant disease state, expert opinions and limited case reports.

Is Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Success Affected by the Testicular Histopathology in Nonobstructive Azoospermic Patients?

Objective: To investigate whether the histological changes observed in testicular tissue might be correlated with pregnancy outcome in intracytoplasmic sperm injection-testicular sperm extraction (TESE) cycles in nonobstructive azoospermic patients. Embryo quality was also tested in various types of histology.
