Human stapedius muscle (SM) can be directly and safely accessed via retrofacial approach, opening new approaches to directly measure the electrically evoked stapedius reflex threshold (eSRT). The measurement of the SM activity via direct surgical access represents a potential tool for objective eSRT fitting of cochlear implants (CI), increasing the benefit experienced by the CI users and leading to new perspectives in the development of smart implantable neurostimulators. 3D middle-ear reconstructions created after manual segmentation and related SM accessibility metrics were evaluated before the CI surgery for 16 candidates with assessed stapedius reflex.

Introduction: The determination of the tinnitus pitch-match (PM) frequency is not straightforward but an important audiological assessment recommended for clinical and research purposes. We evaluated repetitive recursive matching using an iPod-based matching procedure as a method to estimate a patient's PM frequency without audiometric equipment.

Previous neuroimaging studies have shown that sounds can be discriminated due to living-related or man-made-related characteristics and involve different brain regions. The hardware systems necessary to support exercise countermeasures to the deconditioning associated with microgravity exposure have evolved and improved significantly during the first decade of the International Space Station (ISS), resulting in both new types of hardware and enhanced performance capabilities for initial hardware items. The original suite of countermeasure hardware supported the first crews to arrive on the ISS and the improved countermeasure system delivered in later missions continues to serve the astronauts today with increased efficacy. Due to aggressive hardware development schedules and constrained budgets, the initial approach was to identify existing spaceflight-certified exercise countermeasure equipment, when available, and modify it for use on the ISS.

A treadmill with vibration isolation and stabilization designed for the International Space Station (ISS) was evaluated during Shuttle mission STS-81. Three crew members ran and walked on the device, which floats freely in zero gravity. For the majority of the more than 2 hours of locomotion studied, the treadmill showed peak to peak linear and angular displacements of less than 2.

In the present investigation we compared two different techniques of anaesthesia--total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) versus balanced anaesthesia--with and without antiemetic prophylaxis, with regard to postoperative nausea, strangling irritation and vomiting and their influence upon postoperative complications (intraocular bleedings) and postoperative intraocular pressure after pars plana vitrectomia. For this investigation four groups were formed. The anaesthesias were carried out as orotracheal intubational anaesthesia following two standard techniques, which only differ in the choice of the narcotics.
