Bacterial respiratory infections are a major global health concern, often leading to lung injury and triggering lung repair mechanisms. Endogenous epithelial progenitor cells are crucial in this repair, yet the mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates the response of lung epithelial progenitor cells to injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of gram-negative bacteria, focusing on their regulation during lung repair.

In idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), epithelial abnormalities are present including bronchiolization and alveolar cell dysfunction. We hypothesized that the IPF microenvironment disrupts normal epithelial growth and differentiation. We mimicked the soluble factors within an IPF microenvironment using an IPF cocktail (IPFc), composed of nine factors which are increased in IPF lungs (CCL2, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-8, IL-13, IL-33, TGF-β, TNFα, and TSLP).

Introduction: Exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) increase mortality risk and can lead to accelerated loss of lung function. The increased inflammatory response during exacerbations contributes to worsening of airflow limitation, but whether it also impacts epithelial repair is unclear. Therefore, we studied the effect of the soluble factor micro-environment during COPD exacerbations on epithelial repair using an exacerbation cocktail (EC), composed of four factors that are increased in COPD lungs during exacerbations (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α).

Background: Interleukin-11 (IL-11) is linked to the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), since IL-11 induces myofibroblast differentiation and stimulates their excessive collagen deposition in the lung. In IPF there is disrupted alveolar structural architecture, yet the effect of IL-11 on the dysregulated alveolar repair remains to be elucidated.

Guideline adherence of mediastinal staging of non-small cell lung cancer: A multicentre retrospective analysis.

Objectives: Mediastinal lymph node staging of NSCLC by initial endosonography and confirmatory mediastinoscopy is recommended by the European guideline. We assessed guideline adherence on mediastinal staging, whether staging procedures were performed systematically and unforeseen N2 rates following staging by endosonography with or without confirmatory mediastinoscopy.

Material And Methods: We performed a multicentre (n = 6) retrospective analysis of NSCLC patients without distant metastases, who were surgical candidates and had an indication for mediastinal staging in the year 2015.

TGF-β activation impairs fibroblast ability to support adult lung epithelial progenitor cell organoid formation.

Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)-induced fibroblast-to-myofibroblast differentiation contributes to remodeling in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, but whether this impacts the ability of fibroblasts to support lung epithelial repair remains little explored. We pretreated human lung fibroblasts [primary (phFB) or MRC5 cells] with recombinant human TGF-β to induce myofibroblast differentiation, then cocultured them with adult mouse lung epithelial cell adhesion molecule-positive cells (EpCAM) to investigate their capacity to support epithelial organoid formation in vitro. While control phFB and MRC5 lung fibroblasts supported organoid formation of mouse EpCAM cells, TGF-β pretreatment of both phFB and MRC5 impaired organoid-supporting ability.

Most TOMAX-treated SB patients initially experience penile stimulation as inguinal sensation, but eventually, the perception shifts to penis sensation with erotic feelings.

Background: Autochthonous populations of Dermacentor reticulatus ticks in the Netherlands were discovered after fatal cases of babesiosis occurred in resident dogs in 2004. The presence of D. reticulatus in the Netherlands has also linked with the emergence of piroplasmosis in the resident horse population.
