Objective:  We examined the interaction of polymorphisms in the genes heme oxygenase-1 () and nitric oxide synthase () in patients with preeclampsia (PE) as well as the responsiveness to methyldopa and to total antihypertensive therapy.

Methods:  The genes (rs2071746, A/T) and (rs1799983, G/T) were genotyped using TaqMan allele discrimination assays (Applied Biosystems, Foster City, CA, USA ), and the levels of enzyme heme oxygenase-1 HO-1) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Results:  We found interactions between genotypes of the and genes and responsiveness to methyldopa and that PE genotyped as AT presents lower levels of protein HO-1 compared with AA.

Background: The current treatment of perforated peptic ulcers is primary closure, supported by the application of an omental patch. It is difficult and time consuming to perform this procedure by laparoscopic surgery, largely because of the required suturing. It was our aim to develop and test a new method of closure for gastric perforation that is similar in efficacy and safety to a traditional repair.

Degradable polyurethanes (PUs), based on aliphatic diisocyanates, can be very useful in tissue regeneration applications. Their long-term in vivo degradation has not been extensively investigated. In this study a biodegradable PU with copolyester soft segments of DL-lactide/epsilon-caprolactone and hard segments synthesized from 1,4-butanediisocyanate was evaluated with regard to tissue response during degradation and, ultimately, the resorption of the material.

The aim of this study was to evaluate short-term peripheral nerve regeneration across a 15-mm gap in the sciatic nerve of the rat, using a thin-walled biodegradable poly(DL-lactide-epsilon-caprolactone) nerve guide filled with modified denatured muscle tissue (MDMT). The evaluation was performed using transmission electron microscopy and morphometric analysis. Evaluation times ranged from 3 to 12 weeks after reconstruction.
