The structure of the personality of mentally deficient law violators of sound mind can be differentiated into two types of aberrations, namely pathological (clinical disturbances) and nonpathological (social and psychologic deformations). These properties in different combinations were detected in all law violators examined. The role of these deviations in the genesis of law violation is discussed.

Histological, electron microscopic, and physiological studies on the myocardium of rats and dogs in severe forms of compression syndrome (6-9 hours of compression and 2-4-7 hours after decompression) revealed three groups of morphological changes underlying cardiac insufficiency: (1) predominantly microcirculatory disorders with mild changes in cardiomyocytes detectable in bradycardia. Under these conditions the development of cardiac weakness may be based on both calcium overloading and reflectory weakening of the heart activity; (2) combination of microcirculatory disorders with marked hypoxic damage of the cardiomyocytes structure detectable under conditions of tachycardia may be an independent cause of the cardiac muscle weakness; (3) changes in the structures of cardiomyocytes responsible for nervous impulses conduction: sarcolemma and its derivatives. Under this condition, the probable cause of cardiac disorders may be electrolyte imbalance accompanying postcompression toxemia.

The ultrastructure of blood capillaries and muscle fibers was examined in the I, II, III, and IV stages of obliterating endarteritis (OE) of the lower extremities. A number of morphological parameters were analysed quantitatively. The pathogenetic importance of changes in the fine structure of capillaries and muscle fibers for each stage of the disease was demonstrated.

We have studied in lethal and mutagenic effects and the nature of mutations induced by 3H decays in the 5-th position of cytosine (5-3H-C). The lethal efficiency was determined as alpha 1 = (10.3 +/- 6.

A ribosomal mutant Bacillus subtilis IG1 resistant to 100 mkg/ml of streptomycin was isolated. The strA mutation is cotransduced with the cysA gene and, consequently, maps in the ribosomal cluster. The mutation does not influence cell division but does reduce a level of sporulation as well as its antibiotic and proteolytic activity.

The authors analyzed ultrastructural changes in hepatocytes of weanling rats, induced by allyl alcohol (0.03 ml/kg). The most severe lesions developed in mitochondria of the periportal field of liver lobules during the first 24 hours following alcohol administration.

Electron microscopic studies have been made on the development of the blue spot in 18-day foetuses as well as in 1-, 5-, and 12-day Wistar rats. Cellular bodies of the neurones in the blue spot are not distinguished by the intensive maturation, which is typical for the axons, the latter with respect to their length and spatial distribution being similar in 12--15-day foetuses and adult rats. During prenatal and early postnatal periods, ultrastructural indices were found which indicate the existence of the intensive transport of substances across the hemato-encephalic barrier.

[Ophthalmoplegic myopathy].

Zh Nevropatol Psikhiatr Im S S Korsakova

March 1981

Data of a clinico-morphological examination of 4 patients with the ophthalmoplegic form of myopathy are presented. An electronmicroscopic examination has made it possible to disclose the primary morphological defect in the mitochondria of the patients' muscles. The mitochondrial pathology manifested itself in an increase of the number of these organelles, changes of their shape and size, structural abnormalities and presence of inclusions.

The time course of quantitative changes in the ultrastructure of capillaries and muscle fibrers was studied by the totality of morphological signs in 33 patients with obliterating endarteritis of the lower extremities. As the disease develops, the area of luminal surface and the volume of basal membrane of the capillaries and mitochondria of muscle fibers increase progressively; the volume and number of micropinocytotic vesicles, the volume of myofibrills and the ratio of myofibrill to the mitochondria volume decrease. In early stages of the disease the size of capillary lumen decreases and subsequently increases along with a decrease in the volume of endothelial cells.

The article presents a review and analysis of publications dealing with laser use in endoscopy. Construction of light guides and laser-endoscope models are discussed intended for bleeding coagulation, neoplasm destruction and stimulation of regenerative processes in pathologically changed tissues.

The lethal effect of 35S and 32P decays on cells of yeast radiation-sensitive mutant xrs2 was studied. The mutant is 7 times more sensitive than the wild type to transmutation of both isotopes. The survival curve for xrs2 was exponential.

The alterations of hydrocortisone concentration in the blood serum have been studied in 29 gynecological patients. Epidural anesthesia combined with sodium hydroxybutyrate surface anesthesia prevents an unnecessary activation of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal system. A sedative effect of sodium hydroxybutyrate favours the elimination of emotional stress in patients.

Study of the ultrastructure of the microcirculation tract in patients suffering from chronic pneumonia with bronchiectasis and abscess formation revealed involvement of all parts of the pulmonary and pleural microcirculation system, including intra-and extravascular disorders and changes in the vascular wall. Combination of rheological disorders and dyscoagulation in the microvessels with stable increase in vascular permeability and changes in the components of the aerohematic barrier leads to disturbances of metabolic and hemodynamic homeostasis in the lungs, advancement of the suppurative process, and increase of pulmonary hypertension.
