Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of administering flunixin meglumine (FM) and meloxicam (M) on specific days post-mating on progesterone (P4), total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), oxidative stress index (OSI), pregnancy-specific protein B (PSPB), pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) concentrations and fertility parameters in Awassi sheep.

Methods: Seventy-five Awassi sheep were divided into three groups of 25: control, M and FM. On days 9 and 10 post-mating, the control group received saline, the M group received 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neurodevelopmental conditions marked by social skill deficits and abnormal sensory responses, with an imbalance of excitation and inhibition in the brain being a crucial factor.
  • This study examined the levels of key neurotransmitters (GABA, glutamate, and serotonin) in the thalamus of rats induced with ASD using valproic acid (VPA) during pregnancy.
  • Results showed that ASD rats had higher serotonin levels, altered thalamic volumes, and fewer thalamic neurons and glia compared to the control group, suggesting a disrupted neurotransmitter balance in the thalamus related to ASD.

Adipose tissue represents an organ that is highly dynamic and contributes toward vital survival events such as immune responses, lactation, metabolism fuel, and thermogenesis. Data emerging from recent studies support the notion of adipose tissue being organized into a complex system characterized by a discrete anatomy, elevated physiological plasticity, and specific vascular and nerve supplies. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), along with its receptors, type 1 (VPAC1) and type 2 (VPAC2), has been implicated in various physiological and pathophysiological processes.

Corrosive esophageal burn (CEB) is a disease with high mortality and morbidity rates. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of castor oil, in preventing stricture development at the experimental CEB model. In addition to studying standard histopathological damage data, neopterin, IL-33, and ST-2 proteins were also studied for the first time.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of two treatment methods, microfracture and retrograde subchondral drilling, for patients with osteochondral lesions of the medial talus during ankle arthroscopy.
  • A total of 28 patients were analyzed, with 16 undergoing microfracture and 12 receiving retrograde drilling, and both groups showed similar postoperative outcomes as measured by the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM).
  • The conclusions indicated that both treatment methods are effective for smaller osteochondral lesions (less than 1.5 cm²), with retrograde subchondral drilling being a viable alternative that yields reliable clinical results.

Introduction: The prevalence of sleep disorders in people living with HIV (PLWH) is higher than in the general population. Even if viral suppression is achieved with Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), the chronic immune activation and increased inflammation due to immune reconstitution persist. The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of poor quality of sleep (QoS) and associated risk factors in PLWH and to investigate the relationship between poor QoS and CD4 T lymphocyte count and CD4 reconstitution.

In recent years, various brain imaging techniques have been used as input signals for brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Electroencephalography (EEG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) are two prominent techniques in this field, each with its own advantages and limitations. As a result, there is a growing tendency to integrate these methods in a hybrid within BCI systems.

Background: The study addresses the growing number of hemodialysis (HD) patients undergoing joint arthroplasty, who are at higher risk of complications and mortality. Previous research has often overlooked deaths after discharge. This study aimed to examine early outcomes in a large nationwide cohort of patients who underwent arthroplasty for elective and fracture-related reasons.

Article Synopsis
  • Syndesmosis injuries are found in about 10% of ankle fractures, and the condition of the deltoid ligament influences surgical decisions for these injuries.
  • The study analyzed 38 patients with Weber B ankle fractures to see how tenderness around the medial malleolus relates to syndesmosis injuries, using scores for pain and functionality.
  • Results showed no significant difference in patient scores based on whether a syndesmosis screw was used, but there were notable differences in medial clear space values and tenderness between the groups, suggesting that tenderness does not definitively indicate a syndesmosis injury.

Background Increased posterior tibial slope (PTS) is an important risk factor for non-traumatic graft failure and revision surgery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. If a tibial posterior slope is an important factor for graft failure after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, does it affect clinical outcomes? This study aimed to evaluate the association between PTS and clinical outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Material and methods Patients undergoing arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with hamstring tendons in the clinic were evaluated retrospectively.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of carvacrol (CA), a widely used phytochemical having anti-oxidant and neuroprotective effects, on transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in an animal model of Parkinson's disease (PD). A total of 64 adult male Spraque-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: sham-operated, PD animal model (unilateral intrastriatal injections of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), 6 µg/µl), PD + vehicle (dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)) treatment, and PD + CA treatment (10 mg/kg, every other day, for 14 days). Half of the brain samples of substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and striatum (CPu) were collected for immunohistochemistry and the remaining half were used for molecular analyses.

Scope: The purpose of this study was to look into the antiviral activity of a plant extract derived from the roots of the Saussurea lappa as a food supplement against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Methods And Results: Vero E6 cells are employed in the study to test the neutralizing effect of Saussurea lappa extract against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. For anti-viral activity detection, a sensitive real-time cell analyzer (xCELLigence RTCA) with a high repetition rate is used.

Article Synopsis
  • Metacarpal bone fractures can cause significant shortening of the phalanges, affecting function and appearance, often due to various types of injuries or conditions.
  • A case involving a 22-year-old male with a traumatic fracture in the second metacarpal was treated using an external fixator to lengthen the bone and reconstruct the defect with an iliac crest graft.
  • Proper surgical techniques and early rehabilitation can lead to successful outcomes with minimal complications following metacarpal fractures.

Ganglion cysts are masses that we encounter frequently in our daily practice, usually in the upper extremity, less frequently in the lower extremities, and rarely cause compression symptoms. We present a case of a massive ganglion cyst of the lower limb causing peroneal nerve compression, managed with excision and proximal tibiofibular joint arthrodesis to prevent recurrence. Examination and radiological imaging of a 45-year-old female patient who was admitted to our clinic showed new-onset weakness in right foot movements and numbness on the dorsum of the foot and lateral cruris, a mass consistent with a ganglion cyst expanding the muscle was detected in the peroneus longus muscle.

Neurodegenerative diseases are chronic and progressive disease groups characterized by the decline of neural transmission because of the loss of structure and function of neurons. Although there is currently no effective treatment for neurodegenerative diseases, new treatment strategies need to be developed urgently. Among neurotrophins, BDNF has been extensively investigated, and it has emerged as an important regulator of synaptic plasticity, neuronal survival, and differentiation.

The event related P300 potentials, positive waveforms in electroencephalography (EEG) signals, are often utilized in brain computer interfaces (BCI). Many studies have been carried out to improve the performance of P300 speller systems either by developing signal processing algorithms and classifiers with different architectures or by designing new paradigms. In this study, a new paradigm is proposed for this purpose.
