Purpose: The pathogenesis of pulmonary hypoplasia associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) remains unclear. Interactions between the epithelium and surrounding mesenchyme play an important role in normal lung morphogenesis. Epimorphin, a stromal protein, plays a role in epithelial morphogenesis and lung branching, both of which are involved in pulmonary hypoplasia.

In the present study, we measured the concentrations of reduced glutathione (GSH) and malonyldialdehyde (MDA) and the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione S-transferase (GSH-S-T), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) in erythrocytes obtained freshly from adult male donors which was preserved with CPDA-1 anticoagulant (citrate, phosphate, dextrose, adenine) on different days of storage. At the end of the study, storage-associated alterations in antioxidant activities were noted and discussed. GSH, GSH-Px, GSH-S-T, SOD, CAT and G-6-PD activities decreased, but erythrocyte MDA levels, as anindex of lipid peroxidation, increased during the storage period.

Objectives: Previous studies have revealed an increase in several forms of phospholipase A2 activity associated with cell injury, but the secretory form of phospholipase A2 has not previously been studied in neurological disorders. We investigated the influence of seizures on secretory phospholipase A2 and phospholipid breakdown in synaptosome fractions prepared from rat hippocampus, cortex and cerebellum in pentylenetetrazol-induced epilepsy.

Material And Methods: Secretory phospholipase A2 concentration was measured by a photometric enzyme immunoassay.

Antioxidant defenses within the lung are pivotal in preventing damage from oxidative toxicants. There have also been several reports with conflicting results on the antioxidant system during aging. In this study, we attempted to investigate age-related alterations in both antioxidant enzyme activities and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), a product of lipid peroxidation, in the whole lung of control and sulfur dioxide (SO2) exposed rats of different age groups (3-, 12-, and 24-months-old).

To examine the antioxidant effect of bilirubin (BR) on leukocyte, we treated leukocytes obtained from healthy subjects with an oxidant and various concentrations of BR. High concentrations of BR decreased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and catalase activities, increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, but had no effect on glutathione (GSH) concentration. Our results showed that under physiological conditions, BR has an antioxidant effect only in high concentrations.

The thyroid hormone profile was investigated in goitrous schoolchildren aged 6-11 years living in Antalya, an area with mild/ moderate iodine deficiency. With few exceptions, the serum levels of T4 and TSH were in the normal range in children with different grades of goiter. Compensatory elevated T3 levels were detected in 24% of the subjects.

The effect of sulfur dioxide on red blood cell antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation was investigated in young (3 mo), middle-age (12 mo), and old (24 mo) male albino rats. Ten ppm of sulfur dioxide was administered to the rats in the sulfur dioxide groups in an exposure chamber. Exposure occurred 1 hr/d, 7 d/wk, for 6 wk; control rats were exposed to filtered air during the same time periods.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency is the most common human enzymopathy. In this research, we studied two groups consisting of 30 male subjects who are G-6-PD deficient and 30 normal male subjects matched with the G-6-PD-deficient patients for age. All 30 assays were performed under normal conditions free of any oxidative attack that may result in haemolytic crisis in G-6-PD-deficient subjects.

Ageing is associated with changes in physical characteristics and decline of many physiological functions. It has been accepted that the oxidative stress or damage induced by free radicals is related to ageing. Three age groups, 3, 12 and 24 months, were used to investigate whether age-associated changes in some parameters (vitamin C and ceruloplasmin) in the plasma of male Swiss-Albino rats and to observe possible effects of sulfur dioxide (SO2) for 6 weeks on the same parameters.
