Introduction: Veterinary clinical microbiology laboratories play a key role in antimicrobial stewardship, surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and prevention of healthcare associated-infections. However, there is a shortage of international harmonized guidelines covering all steps of veterinary bacterial culture from sample receipt to reporting.

Methods: In order to gain insights, the European Network for Optimization of Veterinary Antimicrobial Treatment (ENOVAT) designed an online survey focused on the practices and interpretive criteria used for bacterial culture and identification (C&ID), and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of animal bacterial pathogens.

Article Synopsis
  • An online survey of European thyroid specialists revealed that 28% believe thyroid hormone (TH) treatment may be appropriate for euthyroid patients with growing simple goiters, despite guidelines against this practice.
  • There were significant regional differences in support for TH treatment, with only 7% in The Netherlands compared to 78% in the Czech Republic.
  • Factors influencing the likelihood of recommending TH included the specialist's age and the historical iodine insufficiency of their region, while gender, country, and economic factors showed weak associations.

Background: Due to the high prevalence of hypertension in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and advanced chronic kidney disease, diagnosing secondary hypertension poses challenges. We present a rare case of pheochromocytoma in an ADPKD patient to highlight the diagnostic difficulties in identifying secondary hypertension due to pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PPGL) in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients.

Case Report: A 48-year-old female with ADPKD and ESRD experienced recurrent hypertensive crises (up to 220/135 mmHg) accompanied by palpitations and tremors that recurred over the past 2 years.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to assess how European thyroid specialists view levothyroxine (LT4) treatment for euthyroid women with positive thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) to improve fertility, as current evidence does not support this practice.
  • - An international survey (THESIS) revealed that 42.8% of over 2,316 respondents believe LT4 might be indicated for these patients, with significant variation across countries, highlighting a range from 22.9% to 83.7% of positive responses.
  • - Factors such as gender, age, and clinical experience influenced opinions; younger specialists and those who treat more thyroid patients were more likely to consider LT4, raising concerns about potential overtreatment risks in

Infections cause substantial morbidity and mortality among patients receiving care in outpatient hemodialysis facilities. We describe comprehensive infection prevention assessments by US public health departments using standardized interview and observation tools. Results demonstrated how facility layouts can undermine infection prevention and that clinical practices often fall short of policies.

Objective: Obesity exacerbates pain and functional limitation in persons with knee osteoarthritis (OA). In the Weight Loss and Exercise for Communities with Arthritis in North Carolina (WE-CAN) study, a community-based diet and exercise (D + E) intervention led to an additional 6 kg weight loss and 20% greater pain relief in persons with knee OA and body mass index (BMI) >27 kg/m relative to a group-based health education (HE) intervention. We sought to determine the incremental cost-effectiveness of the usual care (UC), UC + HE, and UC + (D + E) programs, comparing each strategy with the "next-best" strategy ranked by increasing lifetime cost.

Background: Because physical activity (PA) has many benefits for children's and adolescents' mental health, it has been suggested that PA may be an effective strategy to physically and mentally recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. This study tested the reciprocal relationship between PA and mental health during the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. It was hypothesized that mental health during the pandemic would determine how much children and adolescents re-engage in PA after easing the restrictions.

Importance: Identification and preservation of parathyroid glands (PGs) remain challenging despite advances in surgical techniques. Considerable morbidity and even mortality result from hypoparathyroidism caused by devascularization or inadvertent removal of PGs. Emerging imaging technologies hold promise to improve identification and preservation of PGs during thyroid surgery.

"Big data" refers to a growing field of large database research. Administrative data, a subset of big data, includes information from insurance claims, electronic medical records, and registries that can be useful for investigating novel research questions. While its use provides salient advantages, potential researchers relying on big data would benefit from knowing about how these databases are coded, common errors they may encounter, and how to best use large data to address various research questions.

Introduction: Consumptive hypothyroidism is a rare paraneoplastic condition most commonly associated with infantile hemangiomas. It is caused by overexpression of deiodinase type 3 (D3), which leads to preferential conversion of thyroxine to the metabolically inactive reverse triiodothyronine (rT3), paralleled by a decrease of the biologically active T3.

Case Presentation: A 46-year-old male patient with previously normal thyroid function was diagnosed with a renal carcinoma with rhabdoid differentiation.

Radioiodine (RAI) is selectively recommended for intermediate-risk differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC). The information gleaned from pretherapy stimulated thyroglobulin levels (sTg) and diagnostic 131I whole-body scans (DxWBS) to guide therapy remains controversial. The present study aimed at evaluating the impact of preablation sTg and DxWBS in the management of intermediate-risk DTC.

Article Synopsis
  • Refractory hypercalcemia is a serious issue often encountered in patients with parathyroid carcinoma, exemplified by an 84-year-old woman who initially underwent surgery for diagnosed primary hyperparathyroidism.
  • After her surgery, it was later discovered that the lesion was actually parathyroid carcinoma, leading to recurrent severe hypercalcemia despite various treatments like calcimimetic drugs and bisphosphonates.
  • Ultimately, the patient found success in managing her elevated calcium levels with repeated doses of denosumab, which has shown efficacy in treating hypercalcemia caused by malignancies and has resulted in her calcium levels stabilizing over the past three years without the need for further hospitalizations.

The noninvasive subtype of encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (eFVPTC) has been reclassified as noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) in 2016 to reflect the indolent behavior and favorable prognosis of this type of tumor. This terminology change has also de-escalated its management approach from cancer treatment to a more conservative treatment strategy befitting a benign thyroid neoplasm. To characterize the reduced health care costs and improved quality of life (QOL) from management of NIFTP as a nonmalignant tumor compared with the previous management as eFVPTC.

The current study examined the duration of stalking episodes among a nationally representative sample. Analyses of the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey estimated if the victim-perpetrator relationship and other types of victimization experienced were associated with (a) if the stalking episode lasted over a year ( = 1,509) and (b) the length of stalking episodes, in days, for episodes <1 year ( = 506). Findings indicate coercive control was associated with higher odds the stalking episode lasted over a year and increased the length of episodes lasting <1 year.
