Magnesium (Mg)-based implants have evolved as a promising innovation in orthopedic trauma surgery, with the potential to revolutionize the treatment of bone diseases, including osteoporotic fractures and bone defects. Available clinical studies mostly show excellent patient outcomes of resorbable Mg-based implants, without the need for subsequent implant removal. However, the occurrence of radiolucent zones around Mg-based implants seems to be a noticeable drawback for a more widespread clinical use.

This study presents a multi-domain computational framework to investigate the long-term performance of permanent and bioabsorbable magnesium fixation devices in orthopaedic fracture applications. The framework integrates a coupled model for bone fracture healing and remodeling, with an enhanced surface-based corrosion model to predict the performance of bioabsorbable magnesium devices. It was found that plated fracture fixation enabled fracture healing outcomes compare to non-plated models by facilitating direct fracture healing.

Wesselsbron virus (WSLV) is a neglected mosquito-borne virus within the yellow fever subgroup in the genus of the family. Despite being primarily a veterinary pathogen able to cause stillbirths, congenital malformations, and mortality in ruminants, WSLV also infects humans, causing a usually self-limiting febrile illness, or may lead to neurological complications in rare cases. WSLV causes sporadic outbreaks in Southern Africa, but findings in mosquitoes from other African countries suggest a wider distribution.

Long-read sequencing is driving rapid progress in genome assembly across all major groups of life, including species of the family Drosophilidae, a longtime model system for genetics, genomics, and evolution. We previously developed a cost-effective hybrid Oxford Nanopore (ONT) long-read and Illumina short-read sequencing approach and used it to assemble 101 drosophilid genomes from laboratory cultures, greatly increasing the number of genome assemblies for this taxonomic group. The next major challenge is to address the laboratory culture bias in taxon sampling by sequencing genomes of species that cannot easily be reared in the lab.

Bioabsorbable Mg wire-reinforced poly-lactic acid (PLA) matrix composites are potential candidate for load-bearing orthopedic implants offering tailorable mechanical and degradation properties by stacking sequence, volume fraction and surface modification of Mg wires. In this study, we investigated the cytocompatibility, cell-material interaction, and bone differentiation behavior of MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast cells for medical-grade PLA, Mg/PLA, and PEO-Mg/PLA (having PEO surface modification on Mg wires) composites. MTT and live/dead assay showed excellent biocompatibility of both composites while cell-material interaction analysis revealed that cells were able to adhere and proliferate on the surface of composites.

Bispecific and multispecific agents have become increasingly utilized in cancer treatment and immunotherapy, yet their complex design parameters present a challenge in developing successful therapeutics. Bispecifics that crosslink receptors on two opposing cells can provide specific activation of a receptor only when these cells are in close spatial proximity, such as an immune cell and cancer cell in a tumor. These agents, including T cell activating bispecifics, can avoid off-tumor toxicity through activation only in the tumor microenvironment by utilizing a tumor target to cluster T-cell receptors for a selective costimulatory signal.

Herein, we report on a manganese(I)-catalyzed peptide C-H alkenylation under exceedingly mild conditions with natural fluorophores as coumarin- and chromone-derivatives. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) have experienced a surge in clinical approvals in the past five years. Despite this success, a major limitation to ADC efficacy in solid tumors is poor tumor penetration, which leaves many cancer cells untargeted. Yin Yang 1 (YY1) and structural maintenance of chromosomes 3 (SMC3) are 2 critical chromatin structural factors that mediate long-distance enhancer-promoter interactions and promote developmentally regulated changes in chromatin architecture in hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). Although YY1 has critical functions in promoting hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) self-renewal and maintaining HSC quiescence, SMC3 is required for proper myeloid lineage differentiation.
