Objectives: To analyse changes in the use of paediatric (≤16 years) CT over the past decade and to evaluate the appropriateness of CT examinations at a tertiary teaching hospital.
Methods: Data from 290 paediatric CTs were prospectively collected in 2022 and compared with data from 2017 (358 cases) and 2012 (538 cases). The justification of CTs was evaluated with regard to medical imaging referral guidelines and appropriateness rates were calculated.
Objective: Epilepsy develops in one third of the patients after perinatal stroke. It is still unclear which vascular syndrome of ischemic stroke carries higher risk of epilepsy. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the risk of epilepsy according to the vascular syndrome of perinatal stroke.

Background: To find the obstetrical and delivery associated risk factors of antenatal and postnatal grade III intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) or periventricular hemorrhagic infarction (PVHI) in preterm neonates.
Methods: A retrospective study of obstetric and delivery associated risk factors included neonates (<35 gestational weeks) with severe IVH/PVHI (n = 120) and a prospectively collected control group (n = 50). The children were divided into: (1) antenatal onset group (n = 27) with insult visible on cerebral ultrasonography within the first 12 hours of birth or periventricular cystic changes visible in PVHI within the first 3 days; (2) neonatal onset group (n = 70) with insult diagnosed after initial normal findings or I-II grade IVH, and (3) unknown time-onset group (n = 23) with insult visible at > 12 h of age.

Genetic testing was performed using exome or large gene panel (n = 6700 genes) sequencing.

Purpose: To investigate the differences in the pattern of changes in serum inflammatory cytokines measured annually over a 24-month period, between less active and more active overweight boys.
Participants/methods: In total, 25 pubertal overweight boys were divided by their moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels into 2 groups: less active group (LAG; n = 10; MVPA < 60 min/d) and more active group (MAG; n = 15; MVPA > 60 min/d). Aims/hypothesis: An association between increased length/height and weight gain and risk of type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been reported in children. We set out to investigate the potential contribution of T1D human leukocyte antigen (HLA) risk genotypes to this association in two countries with a contrasting disease incidence.
Methods: In Estonia and Finland, length and weight were monitored up to the age of 24 months in 688 subjects.
Background: Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotypes associated with increased risk for type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) have been reported to be associated with increased birth weight. We set out to investigate the association between HLA haplotypes conferring risk for T1D and birth weight and search for possible differences in the strength of these associations among populations with contrasting incidence of T1D.
Methods: As a part of the EU-funded DIABIMMUNE study, genotyping for the HLA haplotypes associated with T1D was performed in 8369 newborn infants from Estonia, Finland and Russian Karelia.
