Determination of styrene monomer migrating in foodstuffs from polystyrene food contact articles using HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS: Results from the Greek market.

In this study, a sensitive, accurate and fast headspace - solid phase microextraction - gas chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry method (HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS) was developed and validated for the determination of styrene in various food matrices (mean recovery ranged from 90 to 116% with a relative standard deviation of ≤11%). The method was used for the determination of the concentration of styrene in 23 foodstuffs packed in polystyrene (PS) containers, as well as the levels of styrene migrating into various foods (water, milk, cheese or cream) from 14 tableware or kitchenware articles made of styrene plastics. All samples were collected from the Greek market in 2020.

Development and validation of a new analytical method for the determination of 1,4-dichlorobenzene in honey by gas chromatography-isotope dilution mass spectrometry after steam-distillation.

A simple, fast, sensitive and robust analytical method using gas chromatography (GC)-isotope dilution mass spectrometry (MS) was developed and validated for the identification and quantification of 1,4-dichlorobenzene (p-DCB) residues in honey samples. The proposed methodology is based on steam-distillation using a Clevenger-type apparatus followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in the selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode employing the isotopically labeled analogue d4-1,4-dichlorobenzene (d4-p-DCB) as internal standard (IS). Validation of the method was performed in two different GC-MS systems, using quadrupole MS (QMS) and ion-trap MS (ITMS) detectors, with no statistically significant differences between two.

Primary and metastatic ovarian cancer in patients with prior breast carcinoma. Pre-operative markers and treatment results.

Background: The pre-operative diagnosis of primary and metastatic malignant ovarian tumors in patients treated for breast cancer is difficult. The objective of this study was to analyze and compare the characteristics and outcome of women with a history of breast cancer in order to identify pre-operative markers useful in differential diagnosis and the role of surgery in their management.

Materials And Methods: The medical records of 36 patients with a history of breast cancer, who had been operated on either for primary or metastatic cancer between 1987 and 2003, were reviewed retrospectively.

Solitary parenchymal splenic recurrence of ovarian adenocarcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

We report a rare case of solitary parenchymal splenic recurrence of epithelial ovarian cancer which developed 27 months after the initial treatment. The patient, a 53-year-old woman, with a history of breast cancer, underwent total abdominal hysterectomy bilateral salpingo-ophorectomy (TAH & BSO), omentectomy and pelvic lymph node sampling for a serous carcinoma of the ovaries (stage IIIB). She subsequently received 6 cycles of cisplatinum chemotherapy.

Stability of the dithiocarbamate pesticide maneb in tomato homogenates during cold storage and thermal processing.

The effect of storage at 5 degrees C and of thermal processing by cooking at 100 degrees C and sterilization at 121 degrees C for 15 min on maneb residues in tomato homogenates was investigated. Remaining maneb and its toxic metabolite ethylenethiourea (ETU) were measured after each treatment by headspace gas chromatography with flame-photometric detection and by high-performance liquid chromatography with photo-diode array detection, respectively. No significant loss of maneb was observed during cold storage for up to 6 weeks, taking into account analytical variability.

Kinetics of maneb degradation during thermal treatment of tomatoes.

The kinetics of maneb degradation in tomato homogenates at high temperatures and at two pH values (4 and 9) and the rate of formation of the toxic metabolite, ethylenethiourea (ETU), were studied. Maneb was measured as carbon disulfide by headspace gas-chromatography and ETU by high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection. First-order kinetics adequately described the degradation of maneb in tomato homogenates.

Skeletal growth factor involvement in the regulation of fracture healing process.

Skeletal growth factors are peptides that serve as signalling agents for living cells, thereby participating in the autocrine, paracrine, intracrine and endocrine bioregulation of tissues and organs in human physiology. Growth factors elicit their cellular actions after binding to specific receptors, which are large transmembrane proteins located on target cells. These receptors relay signals via specific intracellular signal transduction pathways capable of regulating gene transcription, thereby modifying cell proliferation, cell function, cell differentiation and apoptosis.

VIM-1 Metallo-beta-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae strains in Greek hospitals.

Seventeen Klebsiella pneumoniae clinical isolates carrying the bla(VIM-1) metallo-beta-lactamase gene were collected in the intensive care units of three hospitals in Athens, Greece, in 2002. They exhibited various carbapenem resistance levels (Etest MICs of imipenem ranged from 4 to 32 microg/ml). All isolates gave positive results by the imipenem-EDTA synergy Etest.

Determination of ETU in tomatoes and tomato products by HPLC-PDA: evaluation of cleanup procedures.

An HPLC-PDA method for the determination of ethylenethiourea (ETU), the main degradation product of the organic fungicides ethylene bis(dithiocarbamate)s (EBDCs), in tomatoes and tomato products is reported. Solid-matrix liquid-liquid (l-l) partitioning and separatory funnel l-l partitioning for the cleanup were examined. The effect of salt addition, pH, and phase ratio on analyte recovery at the cleanup step was studied.
