Purpose: To compare prospectively open vs. laparoscopic transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) inguinal hernia repair performed under different anesthetic methods.

Methods: A total of 175 patients scheduled for unilateral inguinal hernia repair were assigned to one of the following groups: (i) open repair under local anesthesia, (ii) open repair under regional anesthesia, (iii) open repair under general anesthesia, and (iv) TAPP under regional anesthesia.

Background: Regional anesthesia has not been used as the sole anesthetic procedure in laparoscopic ventral hernia repair due to the fear of potential adverse effects of the pneumoperitoneum. However, there are recent reports on the feasibility of performing laparoscopic procedures, such as cholecystectomy, in fit patients, under spinal anesthesia alone. The current study aimed to detect the feasibility of performing laparoscopic ventral hernia repair under spinal anesthesia.
