Surgical treatment of large and complicated hiatal hernias with the new resorbable mesh with hydrogel barrier (Phasix™ ST): a preliminary study.

Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of the new monofilament fully resorbable mesh with hydrogel barrier (Phasix™ ST), for large and complex hiatal hernia repair. Between December 2017 and December 2020, 60 patients with large or complicated hiatal hernia were treated (40 robotic and 20 laparoscopic procedures). The mesh was placed after primary closure of the hiatal defect, in an onlay fashion around the esophagus, followed by 360 fundoplication.

Robotic Strong's procedure for the treatment of superior mesenteric artery syndrome. Description of surgical technique on occasion of the first reported case in the literature.

Backround: Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) is a rare disorder caused by compression of the third portion of the duodenum by the SMA. Once a conservative approach fails, usual surgical strategies include Duodenojejunostomy and Strong's procedure. The latter avoids potential anastomotic risks and complications.

Effect of Stress Level on Different Forms of Self-Touch in Pre- and Postadolescent Girls.

Self-touch serves for regulation of both hyper- and hypoarousal. It remains unclear if different forms of self-touch occur in different contexts, and if the regulatory mechanisms are learned or innate. The authors describe forms and context of self-touch, and explore age differences in stress processing.

Acute afferent loop syndrome: a true emergency. A case report.

Afferent loop syndrome is a relatively rare complication after subtotal gastrectomy. We present a late onset of afferent loop obstruction, in a patient who underwent Billroth II gastrectomy with Roux-Y reconstruction for a gastric ulcer 27 years ago. A 60-year-old male was admitted to the hospital with an 8-hour history of acute epigastric pain, associated with vomiting, fever and signs of sepsis.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is a highly promising treatment modality for colorectal cancer. One of the basic side effects of this method is the possible impact on anastomotic healing. Capecitabine is a tumor selective pro-drug of 5-fluorouracil, indicated for the therapy of colorectal cancer.

Laparoscopic placement of ventriculoperitoneal shunts: an innovative simplification of the existing techniques.

Ventriculoperitoneal shunting (VPS) remains one of the alternative choices for the surgical treatment of hydrocephalus. During the last two decades laparoscopy has been utilized to facilitate the placement of the abdominal portion of the shunt. We describe a minimally invasive laparoscopic technique, which facilitates the rapid, safe and direct placement of the peritoneal component of the VPS.

The effect of capecitabine on the healing of colonic anastomoses in rats.

Purpose: Capecitabine is a fluoropyrimidine carbamate with antineoplasmatic activity, recommended for the treatment of colorectal cancer. This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of the perioperative administration of capecitabine on the healing process of colonic anastomosis.

Methods: Sixty Wistar rats were used, which were randomized in 2 groups of 30 each.

An unusual cause of haemoptysis in a young male.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours are reported to occur in a variety of sites, including the head and neck, abdominal organs, central nervous system and urinary tract. They only rarely occur in the lung. We report a case of a 25-year-old male admitted with haemoptysis.

Interdigital pilonidal sinus in a hairdresser.

Pilonidal sinus of the interdigital web space of the hand is a rare occupational disease which occurs in hairdressers and professionals working with animals. This paper reports such a sinus in the hand of a male hairdresser and reviews the treatment of this condition.
