Purpose: To identify the minimally required number of distances of visual acuity (VA) measurements for the reliable estimation of the visual acuity curve (VAC) and area of the curve (AoC) in presbyopia correction.

Patients And Methods: The study was divided into a validation and a clinical phase with a total recruitment of 120 participants (120 eyes) who underwent uncomplicated pseudophakic presbyopia surgery with bilateral premium intraocular lenses (IOL) implantation. This study was conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology, University Hospital of Alexandroupolis, Alexandroupolis, Greece.

Background: Glucocorticoids have been associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes mellitus (DM) in dogs. Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) and serum fructosamine have been scarcely studied in dogs receiving glucocorticoid therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate HbA1c and fructosamine in non-diabetic dogs receiving oral prednisolone.

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, including 3D mortar printing (3DMP), 3D concrete printing (3DCP), and Liquid Deposition Modeling (LDM), offer significant advantages in construction. They reduce project time, costs, and resource requirements while enabling free design possibilities and automating construction processes, thereby reducing workplace accidents. However, AM faces challenges in achieving superior mechanical performance compared to traditional methods due to poor interlayer bonding and material anisotropies.

Objectives: To assess gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of inflammatory and bone remodelling related biomarkers following transplantation of a tissue-engineered biocomplex into intrabony defects at several time-points over 12-months.

Materials And Methods: Group-A (n = 9) received the Minimal Access Flap (MAF) surgical technique combined with a biocomplex of autologous clinical-grade alveolar bone-marrow mesenchymal stem cells in collagen scaffolds enriched with an autologous fibrin/platelet lysate (aFPL). Group-B (n = 10) received the MAF surgery, with collagen scaffolds enriched with aFPL and Group-C (n = 8) received the MAF surgery alone.

Prolonged SARS-CoV-2 T Cell Responses in a Vaccinated COVID-19-Naive Population.

Introduction: Exploring T cell response duration is pivotal for understanding immune protection evolution in natural SARS-CoV-2 infections. The objective of the present study was to analyze the T cell immune response over time in individuals who were both vaccinated and COVID-19-naive and had undetectable levels of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies at the time of testing.

Methods: We performed a retrospective descriptive analysis using data extracted from the electronic medical records of consecutive adult individuals who underwent COVID-19 immunity screening at a private healthcare center from September 2021 to September 2022.

Highly sensitive resistance spectroscopy technique for online monitoring of biofilm growth on metallic surfaces.

Online techniques for monitoring biofilm formation and evolution are limited, especially as regards its application in flowing water systems. This is chiefly due to the absence of efficient non-destructive and non-invasive sensing methods. In this study, a sensitive electrical resistance spectroscopy technique is developed to monitor non-invasively and in real time the growth of biofilms over metallic surfaces inside water flow systems.

Bilateral Stellate Nonhereditary Idiopathic Foveomacular Retinoschisis (SNIFR) Incidentally Identified in a Non-Myopic Female.

Stellate foveomacular retinoschisis is commonly associated with congenital X-linked retinoschisis, which is almost exclusively seen bilaterally in males. In the absence of a family history of retinoschisis and other related conditions, the term stellate nonhereditary idiopathic foveomacular retinoschisis (SNIFR) is used. SNIFR constitutes a rather rare diagnosis and is usually observed unilaterally in myopic females.

What is the real incidence of right ventricular affection in patients with acute pulmonary embolism?

Background: Echocardiographic markers of right ventricular dysfunction or pressure overload (RV) have been used in risk assessment of patients with acute pulmonary embolism (APE). Nevertheless, the role of echocardiography in these patients is incompletely determined. We evaluated the right ventricular function using 'non-conventional' markers of RV in patients with APE.

Congenital Portosystemic Shunts in Dogs and Cats: Treatment, Complications and Prognosis.

Congenital portosystemic shunts (CPSS) are a common vascular anomaly of the liver in dogs and cats. Clinical signs of CPSS are non-specific and may wax and wane, while laboratory findings can raise the clinical suspicion for CPSS, but they are also not specific. Definitive diagnosis will be established by evaluation of liver function tests and diagnostic imaging.

Effect of Whitening Toothpastes with Different Active Agents on the Abrasive Wear of Dentin Following Tooth Brushing Simulation.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the abrasive dentin wear that can be induced by three commercial whitening toothpastes following a tooth-brushing simulation (TBS) corresponding to a three-month period. Sixty human canines were selected, and the roots were separated from the crowns. Then the roots were randomly divided into six groups ( = 10) and were submitted to TBS using the following slurries: Group 1-deionized water (RDA = 5); Group 2-ISO dentifrice slurry (RDA = 100); Group 3-a regular toothpaste (RDA = 70); Group 4-a charcoal-containing whitening toothpaste; Group 5-a whitening toothpaste containing blue covasorb and hydrated silica; and Group 6-a whitening toothpaste containing microsilica.

Effect of tooth brushing simulation on the surface properties of various resin-matrix computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing ceramics.

Purpose: The purpose was to investigate the alterations in surface properties of different resin-matrix CAD/CAM ceramics following tooth brushing simulation (TBS) and compare them with a direct resin composite and a glass ceramic CAD/CAM material.

Materials And Methods: Four resin-based CAD/CAM restoratives (Brilliant Crios-BR, Lava™ Ultimate-LV, Grandio Blocs-GR and Shofu Block HC-SH), a leucite-reinforced glass ceramic (IPS Empress® CAD-EC) and a resin composite (Filtek™ Z250-FZ) for direct restorations were tested. In particular, surface loss, hardness, roughness and morphology were investigated utilizing confocal microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and nanoindentation tester.

Congenital Portosystemic Shunts in Dogs and Cats: Classification, Pathophysiology, Clinical Presentation and Diagnosis.

Congenital portosystemic shunts (CPSS) are abnormal vascular communications between the portal and the systemic circulation, bypassing the hepatic parenchyma and resulting in liver hypoplasia and hepatic insufficiency. Such connections develop in utero and persist postnatally. CPSS are among the two most common congenital vascular anomalies of the liver in small animals, along with primary hypoplasia of the portal vein without portal hypertension (PHPV without PH).

Diagnostic performance of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) for diabetes mellitus in dogs.

The objective of this study was to determine the diagnostic performance of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) for canine diabetes mellitus (DM) and compare it with that of serum fructosamine. Aliquots of blood samples collected for diagnostic purposes from adult dogs were used. HbA1c was measured using a previously validated capillary electrophoresis assay.

A systematic review of reading tests.

Adequate near and intermediate visual capacity is important in performing everyday tasks, especially after the introduction of smartphones and computers in our professional and recreational activities. Primary objective of this study was to review all available reading tests both conventional and digital and explore their integrated characteristics. A systematic review of the recent literature regarding reading charts was performed based on the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Springer databases between February and March 2021.

Effect of air-abrasion pretreatment with three bioactive materials on enamel susceptibility to erosion by artificial gastric juice.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to investigate the protective effect of three in-office preventive treatments with bioactive materials against enamel erosion induced by artificial gastric juice similar to that found in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) patients. The treatments included air-abrasion of enamel with a fluoride-containing bioactive glass (BioMinF®), Bioglass 45S5 (ProSylc) and nano-hydroxyapatite (MI Pearls) to test enamel susceptibility following an erosive challenge.

Methods: Enamel surface loss was evaluated using confocal microscopy, while changes in enamel surface roughness and morphology were also investigated after the treatments.

Pneumococcal serotypes in adults hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia in Greece using urinary antigen detection tests: the EGNATIA study, November 2017 - April 2019.

Greece introduced a 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) into the infant national immunization program in 2010 (3 + 1 schedule until June 2019). Since 2015, PCV13 has been recommended for adults aged 19-64 years with comorbidities and adults ≥65 years sequentially with 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). We examined pneumococcal serotype distribution among Greek adults aged ≥19 years hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) during November 2017-April 2019.

Evaluation of Monomer Elution and Surface Roughness of a Polymer-Infiltrated Ceramic Network CAD-CAM Material After Er,Cr:YSGG Laser-assisted Tooth Bleaching.

Purpose: The aim of this in vitro study was to examine the effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser-assisted tooth bleaching treatment on the elution of monomers and surface roughness of a hybrid computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) material, and to compare it with a resin composite for direct restorations.

Methods And Materials: Forty specimens of a hybrid CAD-CAM material (Enamic) and forty of a conventional resin composite (Tetric) were fabricated and randomly divided into four groups (n=10). Half of the specimens of each material were stored in distilled water and the other half in artificial saliva for 7 days.
