An unprecedented enantioselective protonation reaction enabled by photoredox catalytic radical coupling is developed. Under cooperative dicynopyrazine-derived chromophore (DPZ) as a photosensitizer and a chiral phosphoric acid catalyst, and Hantzsch ester as a sacrificial reductant, the transformations between α-substituted enones and cyanoazaarenes or 2-(chloromethyl)azaaren-1-iums can proceed a tandem reduction, radical coupling, and enantioselective protonation process efficiently. Two classes of pharmaceutically important enantioenriched azaarene variants, which contain a synthetically versatile ketone-substituted tertiary carbon stereocenter at the β- or γ-position of the azaarenes, are synthesized with high yields and ees.

Background: We hypothesized that tumor- and hospital-level factors, compared with surgeon characteristics, are associated with the majority of variation in the 12 or more lymph nodes (LNs) examined quality standard for resected colon cancer.

Study Design: A dataset containing an anonymized surgeon identifier was obtained from the National Cancer Database for stage I to III colon cancers from 2010 to 2017. Multilevel logistic regression models were built to assign a proportion of variance in achievement of the 12 LNs standard among the following: (1) tumor factors (demographic and pathologic characteristics), (2) surgeon factors (volume, approach, and margin status), and (3) facility factors (volume and facility type).

Background: Dysregulated cell death machinery and an excessive inflammatory response in Coxsackievirus B3(CVB3)-infected myocarditis are hallmarks of an abnormal host response. Complement C4 and C3 are considered the central components of the classical activation pathway and often participate in the response process in the early stages of virus infection.

Methods: In our study, we constructed a mouse model of CVB3-related viral myocarditis via intraperitoneal injection of Fer-1 and detected myocarditis and ferroptosis markers in the mouse myocardium.

Observational data, such as electronic clinical records and claims data, can prove invaluable for evaluating the Average Treatment Effect (ATE) and supporting decision-making, provided they are employed correctly. The Inverse Probability of Treatment Weighting (IPTW) method, based on propensity scores, has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in estimating ATE, assuming that the assumptions of exchangeability, consistency, and positivity are met. Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAGs) offer a practical approach to assess the exchangeability assumption, which asserts that treatment assignment and potential outcomes are independent given a set of confounding variables that block all backdoor paths from treatment assignment to potential outcomes.

Introduction: Limited water and soil phosphorus (P) availability often hampers lucerne productivity in semiarid regions. Plastic film mulch and P application typically enhance young lucerne (2-3 years) productivity by increasing soil water use and P availability. However, the prolonged impact of film mulch and P application on lucerne productivity as the stand ages remains unclear.

The prevalence and progression of cancer differ in males and females, and thus, sexual dimorphism in tumor development directly impacts clinical research and medicine. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as important players in gene expression and various cellular processes, including cancer development and progression. In recent years, lncRNAs have been implicated in the differences observed in cancer incidence, progression, and treatment responses between men and women.

Excessive fibrogenic response in the liver disrupts normal hepatic anatomy and function heralding such end-stage liver diseases as hepatocellular carcinoma and cirrhosis. Myofibroblasts, derived primarily from hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), are the effector of liver fibrosis. In the present study we investigated the mechanism by which Brahma-related gene 1 (BRG1, encoded by Smarca4) regulates HSC-myofibroblast transition and the implication in intervention against liver fibrosis.

In this study, we prepared porous Au-Ag alloy nanoparticle arrays with hydrophobic surfaces through the polystyrene colloidal crystal template combined with the chemical etching method to realize rapid SERS detection for biochemical molecules. In the preparation process, the pore size of Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles could be adjusted by changing the deposition time of the Ag element. Furthermore, after depositing the Au film on the surface of the porous nanoparticle arrays, their surface changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic.

Metastasis of hepatoblastoma (HB) is a key factor that impairs the prognosis and treatment of children. The suppressor of cytokine signaling 2 (SOCS2) is a classical negative feedback protein that regulates cytokine signal transduction and has been known to be downregulated in several tumor, but the molecular mechanisms of its involvement in HB metastasis are unknown. We found that SOCS2 was a gene down-regulated in hepatoblastoma and associated with HB metastasis through bioinformatics.

A tuning fork gyroscope (TFG) with orthogonal thin-walled round holes in the driving and sensing directions is proposed to improve sensitivity. The thin walls formed by through holes produce stress concentration, transforming the small displacement of tuning fork vibration into a large concentrated strain. When piezoelectric excitation or detection is carried out here, the driving vibration displacement and detection output voltage can be increased, thereby improving sensitivity.

Background: Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21 syndrome, is commonly associated with congenital heart disease, and can often result in early formation of pulmonary hypertension. The development of pulmonary hypertension can result from factors such as intracardiac and macrovascular shunts, and upper airway obstruction or hypoplasia of lung tissue. Individuals with Down syndrome and congenital heart disease have a significantly lower average life expectancy, with surgical intervention being the most viable treatment option to improve longevity.
