Serological tests for syphilis require equipment unavailable in many health centers; however, point-of-care testing facilitates rapid screening using finger-prick whole blood samples. A further improvement could be oral fluid for ease of use. We evaluated the performance of treponemal antibody point-of-care testing for syphilis screening using oral fluid samples.

Loss of a sensory modality triggers global adaptation across brain areas, allowing the remaining senses to guide behavior more effectively. There are specific synaptic and circuit plasticity observed across many sensory areas, which suggests potential widespread changes in activity. Here we used a cFosTRAP2 mouse line to drive tdTomato (tdT) expression in active cells to spatially map the extent of activity changes in various sensory areas in adult mice of both sexes following two modes of visual deprivation.

Article Synopsis
  • HIV Impact on Couples
  • : HIV significantly affects sexual minority men (SMM) in Lima, Peru, with a large percentage of new infections occurring among male couples; existing research often overlooks the dynamics of couples in prevention efforts.
  • P3 Intervention Developed
  • : To address this gap, the Para Ti, Para Mí, Para Nosotros (P3) program was created as a digital intervention aimed at helping SMM couples improve communication, decision-making, and adherence to tailored HIV prevention plans based on their sexual agreements.
  • Research Goals
  • : The pilot randomized controlled trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of the P3 intervention over six months, assessing its impact on couples' adherence to prevention

Background: Hygiene-based practices of lubrication, genital cleansing, postcoital urination, and rectal douching are common behaviors among populations at higher risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/sexually transmitted infections (STI). Yet, the role these behaviors have on HIV/STI risk has not been well elucidated, especially among transgender women (TW) and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Additionally, advances in biomedical strategies have heralded a new era of HIV/AIDS prevention that may be accompanied by behavioral changes that lead to decreases in condom usage and subsequent changes to STI sequelae.

Background: The global burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) poses a challenge in the context of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programmes. We aimed to explore factors associated with prevalent, incident, and recurrent STIs in men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women on PrEP in Brazil, Mexico, and Peru.

Methods: ImPrEP was a prospective, single-arm, open-label, multicentre study that enrolled MSM and transgender women in the context of the public health systems of Brazil (14 sites), Mexico (four sites), and Peru (ten sites) between February, 2018, and June, 2021.

The New Pathways in Syphilis Vaccine Development meeting was held before the start of the STI & HIV 2023 World Congress as a pre-meeting symposium to highlight recent advances in the development of an effective syphilis vaccine and discuss the challenges still faced by investigators. Internationally renowned public health officials, clinical investigators, and basic researchers from academia, government, and community-based organizations met on July 24, 2023, in Chicago, Illinois. Four speakers discussed key research findings in syphilis vaccine development, which included antigen selection, identification of epitopes associated with protective immunity, and delivery platforms, with great emphasis on development of chimeric antigens.

The slogan Undetectable equals Untransmittable (U = U) communicates that people living with HIV (PLHIV) who are on antiretroviral therapy (ART) will not transmit HIV to their sexual partners. We describe awareness of U = U among sexual and gender minorities (SGM) living in Brazil, Mexico, and Peru by self-reported HIV status (PLHIV, negative, unknown) during 2021 using an online survey. We estimated two models using Poisson regression for each population group: Model A including socio-demographic factors (country, gender, age, race, education, and income), and then Model B including taking ART (for PLHIV) or risk behavior, ever-taking PrEP, and HIV risk perception (for HIV-negative or of unknown HIV status).

Article Synopsis
  • Most forcibly displaced persons live in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), with a significant portion residing in urban areas, highlighting the need to assess their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs.
  • The scoping review analyzed literature from 1998 to 2023, focusing on various dimensions of sexual and reproductive health, including sexual violence, HIV prevention, contraception, and maternal care, through both peer-reviewed and grey literature.
  • Findings from 92 studies across 100 countries revealed substantial barriers to accessing optimal SRH services, including economic hardships, lack of health insurance, and reduced social support in the community.

The functional significance and evolutionary relationships of BURP domain-containing genes unique to plants is of interest. Network analysis reveals different associations of BURP proteins with other proteins and functional terms, throwing light on their involvement in various biological processes and pathways. The gene expression data reveals that BURP genes are affected by salinity stress, reflecting diverse expression patterns in roots and shoots.

Backgrounds: Cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (CycleGAN) is a deep neural network model that performs image-to-image translations. We generated virtual indigo carmine (IC) chromoendoscopy images of gastric neoplasms using CycleGAN and compared their diagnostic performance with that of white light endoscopy (WLE).

Methods: WLE and IC images of 176 patients with gastric neoplasms who underwent endoscopic resection were obtained.

Background: HIV incidence estimation is critical for monitoring the HIV epidemic dynamics and the effectiveness of public health prevention interventions. We aimed to identify sexual and gender minorities (SGM) with recent HIV infections, factors associated with recent HIV infection, and to estimate annualised HIV incidence rates.

Methods: Cross-sectional multicentre study in HIV testing services in Brazil and Peru (15 cities).

Background: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) associated with genital ulcer disease due to herpes simplex virus-2 (HSV-2) are a prominent cause of morbidity and mortality. Serologic screening for HSV-2 is recommended only for individuals with genital herpes symptom history. However, no validated symptom screening tool currently exists.

Introduction: LNG-IUD although used extensively for its non-contraceptive indications like abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), dysmenorrhoea and fibroid uterus, one of the major drawbacks is the high expulsion rates, especially among adenomyotic and fibroid uterus.

Material And Methods: Altius Hospitals, Bangalore have developed a new technique of LNG-IUD fixation, which employs hystero-laparoscopy and usage of a long port closure needle with delayed absorbable sutures.

Conclusion: It ensures proper placement and fixation of the LNG-IUD to the uterine cavity, reduces the expulsion rates and has the advantages of being a day care procedure.

Background: Syphilis diagnosis relies on immunologic markers and clinical protocols. However, syphilitic lesions can be confused with other genital ulcer diseases.

Methods: Using a PlexPCR VHS assay, we analyzed lesion DNA samples from 87 individuals who were clinically diagnosed with early syphilis infection and had at least 1 positive serologic test result.

Aims: Immediate bleeding after cold snare polypectomy (CSP) for colorectal polyps might interfere with confirmation of residuals and prolong the time required for resection. We investigated whether submucosal epinephrine-added saline injection reduces the time required for the CSP procedure.

Methods: We conducted a single-center, prospective, randomized controlled trial (clinical trial registration number: UMIN000046770).
