Mass screening of hepatitis B and C in Burkina Faso: seroprevalence update and impact of hepatitis B vaccine.

Introduction: Updated data on the seroprevalences of hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV) are required to enable the adaptation of control strategies. In this study, we aimed to: (i) estimate the seroprevalences of HBsAg carriers and HCV exposure in the general population, and (ii) determine the impact of vaccination on HBV circulation since its introduction in 2006 in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI).

Methodology: From October 2020 to October 2022, a mass screening campaign was conducted in 10 cities across Burkina Faso.

Relationship between red blood cell polymorphisms and effectiveness of seasonal malaria chemoprevention in 2020 in Dangassa, Mali.

Treatment failure with amodiaquine was reported in Dangassa, where red blood cell (RBC) polymorphisms are found and seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) is underway. Here, we aimed at assessing the influence of RBC polymorphisms on SMC effectiveness. This was a secondary analysis of data from a study conducted in Dangassa.

Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 Antibodies and Associated Factors in Bamako, Mali: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study in September 2022.

Background: The sero-epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infections in Mali are not yet well understood. This study assessed SARS-CoV-2 antibody seroprevalence and factors associated with antibody responses in the general population of Bamako, the capital city and epicenter of COVID-19, to assess the magnitude of the pandemic and contribute to control strategy improvements in Mali.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in September 2022 to collect sociodemographic information, clinical characteristics, comorbid factors, and blood samples.

Diallel analysis, maternal effect and heritability in groundnut for yield components and oil content.

Background: Groundnut is one of the world's major food and oil crops. Being sources of nutrition and vegetable oil, rich in affordable and digestible protein, it is a strategic crop in Burkina Faso for food security, nutrition, and cash income. Understanding the nature of gene effect and genetic variation affecting yield and yield component traits will contribute to designing appropriate breeding methods for groundnut improvement and increase selection efficiency in Burkina Faso.

Dyslipidemia in Adults with Type 2 Diabetes in a Rural Community in Ganadougou, Mali: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Dyslipidemia is a disorder where abnormally lipid concentrations circulate in the bloodstream. The disorder is common in type 2 diabetics (T2D) and is linked with T2D comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular disease. Dyslipidemia in T2D is typically characterized by elevated plasma triglyceride and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels.

Safety and efficacy of peptide receptor radionuclide therapy in neuroendocrine tumors: A single center experience.

Peptide receptor radionucleotide therapy (PRRT) with 177Lu-dotatate is widely used for the treatment of patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). We analyzed data from 104 patients with NETs treated with 177Lu -dotatate at a US academic center between December 2017 and October 2020 to better understand patterns of long-term efficacy, safety, and toxicity in the real-world setting. 177Lu-dotatate (200 mCi) was administered every eight weeks for four doses.

Cross-reactivity of r48/45, a recombinant protein, with sera from endemic areas of Africa.

Background: 48/45, a gametocyte surface protein, is a promising candidate for malaria transmission-blocking (TB) vaccine. Due to its relevance for a multispecies vaccine, we explored the cross-reactivity and TB activity of a recombinant 48/45 protein (r48/45) with sera from -exposed African donors.

Methods: r48/45 was produced in Chinese hamster ovary cell lines and tested by ELISA for its cross-reactivity with sera from Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Mali, and Nigeria - In addition, BALB/c mice were immunized with the r48/45 protein formulated in Montanide ISA-51 and inoculated with a crude extract of NF-54 gametocytes to evaluate the parasite-boosting effect on r48/45 antibody titers.

Modeling clinical malaria episodes in different ecological settings in Mali, 2018-2022.

Resurgence of Malaria Transmission and Incidence after Withdrawal of Indoor Residual Spraying in the District of Koulikoro, Mali.

In Mali, malaria vector control relies mostly on long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor residual spraying (IRS). From 2008 to 2016, an IRS program was implemented in the district of Koulikoro. After a significant reduction in malaria indicators, IRS was stopped in 2016.

Clinical evaluation of commercial SARS-CoV-2 serological assays in a malaria endemic setting.

The levels of immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection or vaccination are poorly understood in African populations and is complicated by cross-reactivity to endemic pathogens as well as differences in host responsiveness. To begin to determine the best approach to minimize false positive antibody levels to SARS-CoV-2 in an African population, we evaluated three commercial assays, namely Bio-Rad Platelia SARS-CoV-2 Total Antibody (Platelia), Quanterix Simoa Semi-Quantitative SARS-CoV-2 IgG Antibody Test (anti-Spike), and the GenScript cPass™ SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization Antibody Detection Kit (cPass) using samples collected in Mali in West Africa prior to the emergence of SARS-CoV-2. A total of one hundred samples were assayed.

Pf7: an open dataset of genome variation in 20,000 worldwide samples.

We describe the MalariaGEN Pf7 data resource, the seventh release of genome variation data from the MalariaGEN network.  It comprises over 20,000 samples from 82 partner studies in 33 countries, including several malaria endemic regions that were previously underrepresented.  For the first time we include dried blood spot samples that were sequenced after selective whole genome amplification, necessitating new methods to genotype copy number variations.

Effect of a fifth round of seasonal malaria chemoprevention in children aged 5-14 years in Dangassa, an area of long transmission in Mali.

Despite a significant reduction in the burden of malaria in children under five years-old, the efficient implementation of seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) at large scale remains a major concern in areas with long malaria transmission. Low coverage rate in the unattainable areas during the rainy season, a shift in the risk of malaria to older children and the rebound in malaria incidence after stopping drug administration are mainly reported in these areas. These gaps represent a major challenge in the efficient implementation of SMC measures.

[Nutritional Status Of Children Under Five During Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention In 2018 At Kita, Mali: Household Survey].

Introduction: Malaria and malnutrition are among the major causes of morbidity and mortality in children under five in Mali. This study is part of the analysis of the association between both in children under five after a seasonal malaria chemoprevention distribution campaign.

Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional household survey in rural areas after a seasonal malaria chemoprevention distribution campaign to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and parasitaemia in children under five who had passed the season of high transmission of malaria in the health district of Kita.

Aims: To describe the clinical and evolutionary aspects of the primary closure of exstrophy at the CHU Gabriel Touré.

Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective and prospective study carried out from January 2014 to December 2019 in all the children admitted and operated on for bladder exstrophy at the CHU Gabriel Touré.

Results: We collected 35 cases of exstrophy, ie25 boys and 10 girls.

A Decade of Progress Accelerating Malaria Control in Mali: Evidence from the West Africa International Center of Excellence for Malaria Research.

This article highlights over a decade of signature achievements by the West Africa International Centers for Excellence in Malaria Research (WA-ICEMR) and its partners toward guiding malaria prevention and control strategies. Since 2010, the WA-ICEMR has performed longitudinal studies to monitor and assess malaria control interventions with respect to space-time patterns, vector transmission indicators, and drug resistance markers. These activities were facilitated and supported by the Mali National Malaria Control Program.

The West Africa ICEMR Partnerships for Guiding Policy to Improve the Malaria Prevention and Control.

The Mali National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) recently established a phased set of goals for eliminating malaria in Mali by 2030. Over the past decade, the scale-up of NMCP-led malaria control interventions has led to considerable progress, as evidenced by multiple malariometric indicators. The West Africa International Center of Excellence in Malaria Research (WA-ICEMR) is a multidisciplinary research program that works closely with the NMCP and its partners to address critical research needs for malaria control.

Excision in girls: Life-threatening acute complications in girls within 7 days of excision: Experience of the Pediatric Department of the University Hospital Gabriel Toure in Bamako, Mali.

Unlabelled: The practice of excision in girls poses a significant risk to their health. The objective of this study was to determine the immediate acute complications associated with this practice.

Patients And Methods: This was a retrospective descriptive study over a period of 15 months including all girls aged 0-15 years hospitalized for acute complications related to excision within 7 days of the practice in the pediatric department of the University Hospital Gabriel Toure.

Effect of seasonal malaria chemoprevention in children between 5 and 9 years old in Kita and Bafoulabe districts, Mali.

Background: Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) has been widely expanded in Mali since its recommendation by the the World Health Organization in 2012. SMC guidelines currently target children between three months and five years of age. The SMC initiative has been largely successful.
