Background: The three-ringed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) phenanthrene (Phe) has been implicated in the cardiotoxicity of petroleum-based pollution in aquatic systems, where it disrupts the contractile and electrical function of the fish heart. Phe is also found adsorbed to particulate matter and in the gas phase of air pollution, but to date, no studies have investigated the impact of Phe on mammalian cardiac function.
Objectives: Our objectives were to determine the arrhythmogenic potential of acute Phe exposure on mammalian cardiac function and define the underlying mechanisms to provide insight into the toxicity risk to humans.
The prevalence of kinetically accessible states in supramolecular polymerization pathways has been exploited to control the growth of the polymer and thereby to obtain niche morphologies. Introduction: Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS) refers to visual hallucinations in visually impaired patients without psychiatric illness who are typically aware that their hallucinations are not real. Rare cases in the literature describe patients with atypical CBS, or CBS plus, who experience hallucinations in the context of sensory deficits but do not meet all of the criteria of a CBS diagnosis. Following the recent spill of approximately 17 500 tonnes of diesel fuel in Norilsk, Russia, May 2020, our study focussed on the effects of phenanthrene, a low molecular weight PAH found in diesel and crude oil, on the isolated atrial and ventricular myocytes from the heart of the polar teleost, the Navaga cod (Eleginus nawaga). This chapter will address the issue of risk for HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND), focusing on HIV-associated dementia (HAD), among persons living with HIV in relationship to the risk for other dementias. Advances in effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) have led to an increase in the prevalence of older persons surviving with HIV - in addition to older persons who become infected by HIV later in life. Hence, HIV is no longer a disease of younger persons, and additional attention has been brought to bear against the plight of older persons living with HIV - not only as it pertains to treatment but also to prevention.
