Intermittent claudication of the spinal cord due to ossification of the ligamentum flavum. A report of two cases.

Two patients are described who developed intermittent claudication of the spinal cord which caused spastic paraparesis during walking. The cause in both was multi-level ossification of the ligamentum flavum. Epidural spinal cord evoked potentials showed disappearance of the third negative component in one case, and positive-going waves in the most compressed area.

[Clinical results of treatment with the UFT fine granule preparation under cooperative study. Tokyo Cancer Chemotherapy Cooperative Study Group].

We have carried out Phase II study by single oral administration of UFT fine granule preparation consisting of 1-(2-tetrahydrofuryl)-5-fluorouracil(FT-207) and uracil in the molar ratio of 1 : 4. There were 40 evaluable cases out of 54 registered cases, and PR rate was 10.0%.

[Phase I study of 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5'-DFUR)].

A phase I study of a new fluorinated pyrimidine compound, 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine (5'-DFUR), was performed in 37 patients with various malignant cancers. Starting dose was 600 mg/m2/day (900 mg/body/day) and escalated up to 3900 mg/body/day. The dose given was divided into 3 administrations a day for 5 consecutive days.

[Clinical experiences with pepleomycin].

From experimental observations, Peplomycin was expected to be more active against a variety of tumors and to be less toxic for the lung than the parent compound. An intermittent dose(10mg. twice a week) of peplomycin was tested in patients with malignant lymphoma or squamous cell carcinoma who had failed conventional treatment.

[TAC-278. A new 5-FU derivative, by the oral route for its efficacy and safety in 36 patients with advanced cancers].

Tumor regression was observed in only one patient. Twelve (33%) of the 36 patients reported adverse effects: gastrointestinal symptoms in 8, CNS symptoms in 3, and others in 1. The antitumor efficacy of TAC-278 was insufficient while incidence of adverse effects was similar to other 5-FU derivatives in man and the clinical usefulness of the drug was hardly found.

Clinical aspects of adriamycin in Japan.

Adriamycin has not been as extensively evaluated in Japan as in some other countries. This is due both to the widespread use of mitomycin C and importantly to the alopecia caused by adriamycin being particularly disturbing to Japanese patients. Japanese studies have shown the drug to be highly active in tumors such as stomach cancer (31/92), lung cancer (27/84), and malignant lymphomas (15/46).
