Purpose: To evaluate the effects of a short web-based educational program on Japanese nurses' self-reported attitudes toward tobacco cessation and their use of interventions to help smokers to quit.

Design: Prospective, single-group design with a pre-educational survey, a short web-based educational program, and a follow-up survey at 3 months.

Methods: Clinical nurses were asked to view two prerecorded webcasts about helping smokers quit.

Cardiac Strangulation Due to Partial Pericardial Defect Presenting as Acute Myocardial Infarction.

A 79-year-old man with chest pain and dyspnea underwent emergency percutaneous coronary intervention for acute myocardial infarction. However, he died 17 days later due to refractory heart failure. An autopsy revealed cardiac strangulation caused by herniation of the apical heart through a pericardial defect due to partial absence of the pericardium.

Artificial pneumothorax suppresses postoperative inflammatory reaction in mediastinal tumor surgery.

Objective: The induction of artificial pneumothorax has many intraoperative advantages. However, few reports on the postoperative effects of artificial pneumothorax induction are available. Artificial intelligence-supported lung cancer detection by multi-institutional readers with multi-vendor chest radiographs: a retrospective clinical validation study.

Background: We investigated the performance improvement of physicians with varying levels of chest radiology experience when using a commercially available artificial intelligence (AI)-based computer-assisted detection (CAD) software to detect lung cancer nodules on chest radiographs from multiple vendors.

Methods: Chest radiographs and their corresponding chest CT were retrospectively collected from one institution between July 2017 and June 2018. Two author radiologists annotated pathologically proven lung cancer nodules on the chest radiographs while referencing CT.

Differential expression of estrogen receptor subtypes in ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma and clear cell carcinoma.

Purpose: To investigate the role of estrogen receptors (ERs) in high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) and clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the ovary and evaluate ERs as prognostic biomarkers for ovarian cancer.

Methods: This study included 79 patients with HGSC (n = 38) or CCC (n = 41) treated at our institution between 2005 and 2014. Immunohistochemistry examined protein expression of ERα, ERβ, and G protein-coupled estrogen receptor-1 (GPER-1); relationships between ERα, ERβ, and GPER-1 with patient survival were evaluated.

A Multiparametric Assessment of Human Islets Predicts Transplant Outcomes in Diabetic Mice.

Prior to transplantation into individuals with type 1 diabetes, in vitro assays are used to evaluate the quality, function and survival of isolated human islets. In addition to the assessments of these parameters in islet, they can be evaluated by multiparametric morphological scoring (0-10 points) and grading (A, B, C, D, and F) based on islet characteristics (shape, border, integrity, single cells, and diameter). However, correlation between the multiparametric assessment and transplantation outcome has not been fully elucidated.

Construction of Tricyclic Nitrogen Heterocycles by a Gold(I)-Catalyzed Cascade Cyclization of Allenynes and Application to Polycyclic π-Electron Systems.

A novel approach to the direct construction of tricyclic nitrogen heterocycles based on gold-catalyzed cascade cyclization of aminoallenynes is described. The expected biscyclization reaction of hydroxyisobutyryl-protected aminoallenynes was efficiently promoted by a catalytic amount of BrettPhosAuNTf in the presence of iPrOH to produce 1,2-dihydrobenzo[cd]indole derivatives in good yields. When the reaction was combined with Friedel-Crafts acylation or palladium-catalyzed N-arylation, the resulting tricyclic products were efficiently converted into nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic compounds (N-PACs) with highly conjugated π-electron systems.

Successful treatment of remnant gastric cancer with afferent loop syndrome managed by percutaneous transhepatic cholangial drainage followed by elective gastrectomy: a case report.

Background: There are only few reported cases of remnant gastric cancer with concomitant afferent loop syndrome. Emergency surgery is the standard treatment strategy for this disease. Successful Management of Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta for Hemorrhagic Shock Due to Ruptured Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

A 68-year-old man was transferred to our hospital because of sudden right costal pain with unmeasurable hypotension. Ultrasonography revealed possible hemorrhagic shock due to ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). As the patient was not hemodynamically stable after primary treatment, resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) was performed, and hemodynamic stability was then achieved.

Mediating effects of self-stigma and depression on the association between autistic symptoms and recovery in patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders: a cross-sectional study.

Background: Several studies have indicated that self-stigma is associated with depressive symptoms and could be a barrier to recovery in patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. More recently, an association between autistic symptoms and self-stigma was found in schizophrenia-spectrum patients. This study aimed to investigate the association between self-stigma, autistic and depressive symptoms, and recovery in patients with schizophrenia.

A 71-year-old woman presented to our hospital because of a 10 mm nodule with a cavity in right lower lobe on chest computed tomography. Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography showed slight accumulation in the nodule (maximum standard uptake value 2.08).

Purpose: Pericardial fat is appropriate tissue to cover the bronchial anastomotic site because its harvesting is minimally invasive. We investigated the changes in pericardial fat tissue around the anastomotic site after pulmonary resection with tracheobronchoplasty.

Methods: The subjects of this study were 43 lung cancer patients who underwent pulmonary resection with tracheobronchoplasty.

Currently, the lack of reliable biomarkers for liver fibrosis in CH often precludes the clinical management of patients with CH. To explore fibrosis biomarkers, we performed proteome analysis on serum exosomes isolated from patients with CH after the Fontan procedure.

Relaxation process of magnetic friction under sudden changes in velocity.

Although there have been many studies of statistical mechanical models of magnetic friction, most of these have focused on the behavior in the steady state. In this study, we prepare a system composed of a chain and a lattice of Ising spins that interact with each other, and we investigate the relaxation of the system when the relative velocity v changes suddenly. The situation where v is given is realized by attaching the chain to a spring, the other end of which moves with a constant velocity v.

Surgical Outcomes in Patients With Centrally Located Non-small Cell Lung Cancer.

Background/aim: Identification of prognostic factors is helpful in selecting optimal treatment for centrally-located non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This study aimed to detect prognostic factors in patients with centrally-located NSCLC.

Patients And Methods: NSCLCs in the hilar area requiring pneumonectomy or sleeve lobectomy for complete removal are defined as centrally-located NSCLCs.

Effect of Molecular Crowding on Complexation of Metal Ions and 8-Quinolinol-5-Sulfonic Acid.

The effect of molecular crowding on macromolecular reactions has been revealed by many researchers. In this study, we investigate the complexation of metal ions (Zn, Co, and Cd) with 8-quinolinol-5-sulfonic acid as a model of small-molecular reactions in molecular crowding. The complexation constants for 1:1, 1:2, and total complexation in the presence of polyethylene glycol (PEG, a molecular crowding reagent) are evaluated based on the increase in the reactant activity by volume exclusion and the decrease in the water activity due to the change in osmotic pressure.

Discovery of novel Li SSE and anode coatings using interpretable machine learning and high-throughput multi-property screening.

All-solid-state batteries with Li metal anode can address the safety issues surrounding traditional Li-ion batteries as well as the demand for higher energy densities. However, the development of solid electrolytes and protective anode coatings possessing high ionic conductivity and good stability with Li metal has proven to be a challenge. Here, we present our informatics approach to explore the Li compound space for promising electrolytes and anode coatings using high-throughput multi-property screening and interpretable machine learning.

Characteristics of discharge prescriptions for patients with schizophrenia or major depressive disorder: Real-world evidence from the Effectiveness of Guidelines for Dissemination and Education (EGUIDE) psychiatric treatment project.

Background: Monopharmacy with antipsychotics and antidepressants is the first-line treatment for schizophrenia and major depressive disorder (MDD) in most clinical guidelines, while polypharmacy with psychotropic agents in the treatment of schizophrenia is common in clinical practice. There are no detailed data on the prescription patterns for inpatients with mental illness with reliable diagnoses made by treating psychiatrists.

Methods: We gathered prescription data at discharge from 2177 patients with schizophrenia and 1238 patients with MDD from October 2016 to March 2018.

Clinico-epidemiological analysis of 1000 cases of orbital tumors.

Purpose: To clarify the incidence, demography and clinical features of orbital tumors diagnosed in a single institute in Japan.

Study Design: Retrospective, observational case series.

Methods: Patients with primary orbital tumors including tumor-like lesions diagnosed clinically or histopathologically at Tokyo Medical University Hospital between 1995 and 2019 were analyzed.

Biodistribution studies for cell therapy products: Current status and issues.

Information on the biodistribution (BD) of cell therapy products (CTPs) is essential for prediction and assessment of their efficacy and toxicity profiles in non-clinical and clinical studies. To conduct BD studies, it is necessary to understand regulatory requirements, implementation status, and analytical methods. This review aimed at surveying international and Japanese trends concerning the BD study for CTPs and the following subjects were investigated, which were considered particularly important: 1) comparison of guidelines to understand the regulatory status of BD studies in a global setting; 2) case studies of the BD study using databases to understand its current status in cell therapy; 3) case studies on quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) used primarily in non-clinical BD studies for CTPs; and 4) survey of imaging methods used for non-clinical and clinical BD studies.

Intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis successfully resected using laparoscopic fluorescence imaging with indocyanine green after intersphincteric resection for rectal cancer.

Successful resection of intra-abdominal tumors using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging has not been reported. Here, we report a rare case of an intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis successfully resected using this technique after intersphincteric resection (ISR) for rectal cancer. One year after ISR for rectal cancer in a 47-year-old man, computed tomography showed a 50-mm intra-abdominal tumor near the left common iliac vein.
