Fostering Conversation about Synthetic Biology Between Publics and Scientists: A Comparison of Approaches and Outcomes.

Public engagement with science (PES) is an emerging outreach method that builds trust between scientists and public audiences by encouraging two-way conversations and mutual learning about science content and societal values. Building with Biology, a PES initiative focused on synthetic biology, distributed 182 kits with two types of products to informal science education institutions across the United States: 1) hands-on activities for public events, and 2) materials to run public dialogue programs, called forums. This article compares the interest levels, perceived value, and learning of public participants at these events and forums.

Promoting evaluation capacity building in a complex adaptive system.

This study provides results from an NSF funded, four year, case study about evaluation capacity building in a complex adaptive system, the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net). The results of the Complex Adaptive Systems as a Model for Network Evaluations (CASNET) project indicate that complex adaptive system concepts help to explain evaluation capacity building in a network. The NISE Network was found to be a complex learning system that was supportive of evaluation capacity building through feedback loops that provided for information sharing and interaction.

Regression of Nevi After Candida Injection for the Treatment of Verruca Vulgaris.

The most common treatment methods for verruca vulgaris are destructive methods that are often painful and treat individual verruca. Thus immune modulators, including Candida immunotherapy, are used to treat persistent recalcitrant and multiple verrucas simultaneously. Very few side effects are reported with Candida immunotherapy; they include vitiligo and now halo nevi.

Negative predictive value of pigmented lesion evaluation by multispectral digital skin lesion analysis in a community practice setting.

Objective: To determine if the high negative predictive value of a multispectral digital skin lesion analysis that has been previously found in an academic-based trial would be similar in a community-based setting with its expected different distribution of pigmented lesions.

Design: Data were collected from patients undergoing routine skin examinations over a one-year period at a community-based practice in Florida. All lesions that were selected for biopsy to rule out melanoma were also imaged with multispectral digital skin lesion analysis prior to biopsy.

[Changes in body fluid compartments estimated by multifrequency bioelectric impedance analysis in patients treated by hemodialysis].

[Hyperprostaglandin E syndrome in a nine-year-old child].

The authors describe the history of a nine year old girl, with a disease that seemed to be hyperprostaglandin-E syndrome. They give a survey of the literature about the pathophysiological cause of the disease, the clinical and laboratory findings and the effect of indomethacin, which can inhibit the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prolonged treatment with indomethacin can decrease the urinary excretion of prostaglandine, polyuria and hypercalciuria and it can moderate the growth retardation.
