The application of psychedelics in psychiatry and psychotherapy is increasingly the subject of scientific evaluation and discussion in national and international professional and general society, and, internationally, has already been partly applied in the clinical setting. The manuscript provides a basic description of the state of the art regarding evidence and clinical issues; law, ethics and economics are addressed; therapeutic qualification of potential users and a potentially clinical embedding in psychiatry are discussed, taking into consideration current challenges. Thus, the discussion will cover the circumstances under which the application of psychedelics might have a potential to broaden the spectrum of treatments in certain psychiatric conditions, particularly in the context of chronicity and treatment resistance to current methods.

The partial legalization of cannabis in Germany in 2024 will affect both medical and recreational use of cannabis. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component of the cannabis plant, influences heart rate and blood pressure through the endocannabinoid system. Acute and chronic use can pose cardiovascular risks.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the composition of salivary proteins relates to the onset and severity of oral mucositis (OM) in patients undergoing intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for head and neck cancer.
  • A longitudinal analysis was conducted on 40 patients, comparing saliva samples and clinical data before and after treatment, revealing that a significant majority experienced OM, and several salivary proteins were linked to OM outcomes.
  • The findings suggest a potential for using specific salivary proteins as biomarkers for OM, paving the way for personalized medicine approaches to enhance patients' quality of life.

Pediatric traumatic brain injury (pTBI) is a major risk factor associated with adulthood incarceration. Most research into the link between pTBI and adulthood incarceration has focused on incarcerated males, who comprise the vast majority of incarcerated adults, particularly in industrialized nations. In this review, we sought to identify sex-related differences in the incidence and pathophysiology of pTBI and subsequent risk of adulthood incarceration.

Feline chronic enteropathies (FCE) are challenging to diagnose and monitor for progression and response to treatment. Fecal calprotectin might be a useful non-invasive marker to evaluate clinical endpoints of therapeutic monitoring in FCE. We evaluated fecal calprotectin concentrations in cats with FCE before and after initiation of treatment comprised of immunomodulation and/or dietary intervention.

Objective: Compared with postnatal repair, prenatal myelomeningocele (MMC) repair is associated with improved motor function and decreased need for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion. It is unknown how prenatal surgery alters neuroanatomical structures identifiable on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The purpose of this study was to use MRI to compare neurodevelopmental anatomy in patients undergoing fetal MMC repair compared with those undergoing postnatal repair.

Background: CSF has long been accepted to circulate throughout the subarachnoid space, which lies between the arachnoid and pia maters of the meninges. How the CSF interacts with the cellular components of the developing postnatal meninges including the dura, arachnoid, and pia of both the meninges at the surface of the brain and the intracranial meninges, prior to its eventual efflux from the cranium and spine, is less understood. Here, we characterize small and large CSF solute distribution patterns along the intracranial and surface meninges in neonatal rodents and compare our findings to meningeal CSF solute distribution in a rodent model of intraventricular hemorrhage-posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus.

Blood vessels in different vascular beds vary in size, which is essential for their function and fluid flow along the vascular network. Molecular mechanisms involved in the formation of a vascular lumen of appropriate size, or tubulogenesis, are still only partially understood. Src homology 2 domain containing E (She) protein was previously identified in a screen for proteins that interact with Abelson (Abl)-kinase.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-invasive brain stimulation methods, particularly transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), are being studied as potential treatments for addictive disorders, such as tobacco addiction.
  • A randomized, double-blind study with 36 participants tested the efficacy of active vs. sham tDCS combined with a smoking cessation intervention, tracking abstinence and craving levels over time.
  • Results indicated no significant difference in abstinence rates between the groups, but the active tDCS group experienced a notable reduction in craving by the end of the treatment, suggesting potential benefits for smoking cessation that warrant further research.

Five growth factors [ie, insulin, fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2), stem cell factor, IL-3, and stromal-derived factor 1α] in combination are necessary for human endothelial cells (ECs) to undergo tube morphogenesis, a process requiring both lumen formation and sprouting behavior. This study investigated why these factors are required by subdividing the factors into 4 separate groups: insulin-only, insulin and FGF-2, no FGF-2 (all factors but without FGF-2), and all factors. The study found that the insulin-only condition failed to support EC morphogenesis or survival, the insulin and FGF-2 condition supported primarily EC lumen formation, and the no FGF-2 condition supported EC sprouting behavior.

Background: The recent characterization of the glymphatic system and meningeal lymphatics has re-emphasized the role of the meninges in facilitating CSF transport and clearance. Here, we characterize small and large CSF solute distribution patterns along the intracranial and surface meninges in neonatal rodents and compare our findings to a rodent model of intraventricular hemorrhage-posthemorrhagic hydrocephalus. We also examine CSF interactions with the tela choroidea and its pial invaginations into the choroid plexuses of the lateral, third, and fourth ventricles.

Diagnosis of feline chronic inflammatory enteropathies (CIE) and the differentiation from small cell intestinal lymphoma (SCL) can be challenging. Intestinally expressed calprotectin (S100A8/A9 protein complex) appears to be part of the complex pathogenesis of feline chronic enteropathies (FCE). Fecal calprotectin is a non-invasive biomarker for intestinal inflammation in humans and dogs but has not yet been evaluated in cats.
