Article Synopsis
  • A collaboration of clinicians, researchers, and family groups worked from March 2021 to March 2024 to improve tools for assessing brain involvement in Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophies.
  • They reached a consensus on which screening questionnaires and clinical assessments are most effective for understanding neurocognitive and neurobehavioral issues in these conditions.
  • The gathered data will also help study connections between brain comorbidities, dystrophin isoforms, brain imaging, and animal models lacking these isoforms.

Relevance: Nasal congestion is one of the most common complaints in otolaryngology practice and can significantly impact the quality of life for patients. Objective and subjective assessments provide different information, but objective assessment of nasal obstruction is crucial for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. This review demonstrates that peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) is a reproducible and reliable measure of objective nasal patency.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatic artery complications (HACs) after pediatric liver transplantation can lead to significant health issues, and this study aims to understand how common they are, how they are managed, and what outcomes arise from these complications.
  • The research utilizes the international HEPATIC Registry, collecting data on pediatric patients under 18 who experienced HAC within the last 20 years, focusing on survival rates and treatment success.
  • Ethical approval will be obtained from all participating sites, and findings will be shared at conferences and in academic journals, with the study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05818644).

Objective: Aim: To determine the current prevalence of postpartum infections and antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial resistance of responsible pathogens in Ukraine.

Patients And Methods: Materials and Methods: Multicenter prospective cohort study was conducted from January 2020 to December 2022 in fifteen hospitals from twelve regions of Ukraine. Definitions of healthcare- associated postpartum infection were adapted from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Healthcare Safety Network.

Background: The Occlutech Atrial Flow Regulator (AFR) is a self-expandable double-disc nitinol device with a central fenestration. Its use has been approved in the adult population with heart failure and described for pulmonary hypertension (PH). Only case reports and small series have been published about its use in the paediatric population and for congenital heart disease (CHD).

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates portal vein obstruction (PVO) in pediatric liver transplant patients, focusing on its prevalence, treatment practices, and outcomes through a global collaboration of 25 medical centers.
  • - It utilizes a registry to gather data from patients diagnosed with PVO between 2001 and 2021, aiming to measure factors like treatment success and complications following interventions.
  • - Approved by an ethics board, the study plans to share findings in academic journals and conferences, contributing to the understanding of PVO management post-liver transplantation.

Chronic sleep loss profoundly impacts metabolic health and shortens lifespan, but studies of the mechanisms involved have focused largely on acute sleep deprivation. To identify metabolic consequences of chronically reduced sleep, we conducted unbiased metabolomics on heads of three adult Drosophila short-sleeping mutants with very different mechanisms of sleep loss: fumin (fmn), redeye (rye), and sleepless (sss). Common features included elevated ornithine and polyamines, with lipid, acyl-carnitine, and TCA cycle changes suggesting mitochondrial dysfunction.

Introduction: A number of studies on using both three-dimensional printing and virtual models in assessment of aortic coarctation have been published, yet none of them uses virtual modelling as a planning tool in a blind retrospective analysis.

Aim: Assessment of virtual modelling and virtual reality in planning interventional treatment of aortic coarctation.

Material And Methods: The study involved computed tomography scans of 20 patients performed prior to interventional treatment of aortic coarctation, which were used to create a virtual three-dimensional model of the aorta in Materialise Mimics.

Biallelic variants in CACNA1A have previously been reported in nine individuals (four families) presenting with epilepsy and cognitive impairments of variable severity and age-of-onset. Here, we describe a child who presented at 6 months of age with drug-resistant epilepsy and developmental delay. At 10 years of age, she has profound impairments in motor function and communication.

The interest in clinical anatomy of the thoracic duct (TD) has recently grown, owing to discoveries linking its morphology to pathologies such as heart failure or liver cirrhosis. In the light of this knowledge, a cost-efficient and reliable in-vivo imaging method of TD should be devised. Ultrasonography satisfies these criteria and hence is a promising tool for assessment of TD's anatomy and function.

Background: Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a common congenital heart disease but very heterogeneous in terms of detailed cardiac anatomy, associated malformations, and genetic anomalies, especially when assessed prenatally.

Aims: We aimed to analyze the clinical spectrum of TOF in the prenatal period, including detailed cardiac morphology, coexisting anomalies, and their impact on short-term neonatal outcome. We also assessed changing trends in the prenatal diagnostic workup of TOF.

Sleep is a conserved and essential behavior, but its mechanistic and functional underpinnings remain poorly defined. Through unbiased genetic screening in , we discovered a novel short-sleep mutant we named . Positional cloning and subsequent complementation, CRISPR/Cas9 knock-out, and RNAi studies identified Argus as a transmembrane protein that acts in adult peptidergic neurons to regulate sleep.

The aim of fetal cardiac interventions (FCI), as other prenatal therapeutic procedures, is to bring benefit to the fetus. However, the safety of the mother is of utmost importance. The objective of our study was to evaluate the impact of FCI on maternal condition, course of pregnancy, and delivery.

Regulation of circadian behavior and physiology by the brain clock requires communication from central clock neurons to downstream output regions, but the mechanism by which clock cells regulate downstream targets is not known. We show here that the pars intercerebralis (PI), previously identified as a target of the morning cells in the clock network, also receives input from evening cells. We determined that morning and evening clock neurons have time-of-day-dependent connectivity to the PI, which is regulated by specific peptides as well as by fast neurotransmitters.

This article presents the technical aspects of the Polish fetal cardiac interventions (FCI) program, including preparation of the team and modifications in the technique of the procedure that aim to increase its safety for the mother and the fetus. Over 9 years, 128 FCI in 113 fetuses have been performed: 94 balloon aortic valvuloplasties (fBAV), 14 balloon atrioseptoplasties (fBAS) with stent (BAS+), 5 balloon atrioseptoplasties without stent placement (BAS-), and 15 fetal pulmonary valvuloplasties (fBPS). The technical success rate ranged from 80% (BAS-) to 89% (fBAV), while the procedure-related death rate (defined as death within 72 hours following the procedure) ranged from 7% (fBAV and fBPV) to 20% (BAS).

Prenatal restriction of the ductus arteriosus can manifest as persistent pulmonary hypertension in the newborn, especially dangerous with the transposition of the great arteries. Its aetiology has long been related to maternal intake of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs; however, some other substances, including polyphenols, may have similar properties. We describe a case of complete prenatal closure of the ductus arteriosus in the foetus with transposition of the great arteries.

Objective: To present the preliminary outcomes of fetal urethroplasty using a coronary angioplasty balloon catheter in lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO).

Methods: We included 10 consecutive male fetuses diagnosed with LUTO caused by presumed isolated posterior urethral valves (PUVs), who underwent urethroplasty with a balloon catheter in our center between 2015 and 2018. During urethroplasty, the fetal urethra was dilated using a balloon catheter (diameter, 0.
