A 66-year-old man was admitted to our department with anterograde amnesia. He was diagnosed with transient global amnesia (TGA) because of the symptom lasting for several hours and no abnormal findings on MRI and EEG. About a year after the episode, he recurred amnesia lasting only for 20 minutes.

Neurological examinations upon admission revealed cerebellar ataxia including dysarthria, ataxic gait and bilateral intention tremor. Brain FLAIR MRI on day 2 revealed abnormal hyperintense lesions in the bilateral insular cortex and temporal pole.

A 49-year-old man was transferred to our hospital with chief complaint of global aphasia and weakness of right upper and lower limbs. Brain MRI showed ultra-acute cerebral infarction in left anterior cerebral artery and middle cerebral artery territory and MRA showed occlusion of A2 and M2. Although t-PA was administrated intravenously, symptoms didn't improve and giant internal carotid thrombus (size 6 × 7 × 17 mm) was recognized at left internal carotid artery by carotid ultrasonography.

Objective: We have previously shown that Na(+)/H(+) exchanger isoform 1 (NHE1) plays an important role in Ca(2+) signaling and cell proliferation in human central nervous system (CNS) pericytes. The aims of the present study were to elucidate how NHE1-induced Ca(2+) signaling during acidosis is transformed into cellular responses in CNS pericytes.
Methods And Results: Human CNS pericytes were cultured, and the activation of cAMP responsive element-binding protein (CREB) was evaluated by Western blotting analysis, immunofluorescence, and luciferase assays.
Neurotrophins are crucial regulators of neuronal survival and death. Evidence suggests that cells comprising the neurovascular unit (NVU) cooperatively mediate neuronal development, survival and regeneration. The aim of this study was to test whether cerebrovascular cells, endothelial cells and pericytes, produce neurotrophins and play neuroprotective roles during hypoxic insults.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe report a 50-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed stroke-like symptoms, including disturbance of consciousness and severe left hemiparesis. Despite the stroke-like symptoms, MR imaging showed quite atypical findings for stroke; broad high-intensity areas in the right fronto-parietal lobes on diffusion-weighted images were shown mainly as iso-intensity areas on the ADC map, without any findings of stenosis of the cerebral large arteries. The cerebral blood flow in these areas was significantly decreased, as evaluated by single photon emission computed tomography.
