Background/aim: At the moment there are few scoring systems for malignant astrocytoma but they are not widely accepted. The aim of this study was to evaluate malignant astrocytoma score (MAS) on a new group of patients with malignant astrocytoma, to compare MAS with other prognostic tools and to describe the use of MAS in everyday practice in neurooncology.

Methods: The study was performed on 124 patients with supratentorial malignant astrocytoma grade III or IV.

Chronic subdural hematoma is usually caused by minor head trauma and occurs frequently with older people. Predisposing factors include alcohol abuse, epilepsy and coagulopathy. This report presents a 65-year old woman who had a large, mixed density, left sided compressive chronic subdural hematoma diagnosed by computed tomography.

Background: Numerous studies with conflicting results have tried to prove the influence of seasonal variations or different meteorological factors on the occurrence of aneurysmal subarachnoidal hemorrhage (SAH). The aim of this study was to establish a mathematical model of a series of aneurysmal rupture dates in different patients and verify a temporal pattern in the occurrence of SAH.

Methods: We analyzed a group of 563 patients with the exact aneurysm rupture dates, hospitalized at the Clinic of Neurosurgery, Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia, between January 1, 1998 and December 31, 2009.

Introduction: A gunshot head injury, characterized by a huge intensity of mechanical force, in addition to the direct tissue damage at the location of direct impact, may cause a skull and skull base fracture, distant from the the point of direct impact, which could be further complicated by creating a communication between endocranium and nasal/paranasal cavities. Such cases pose a great diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for every clinician.

Case Report: The patient is presented with the history of a perforating gunshot head injury six years ago, with recurrent attacks of meningoencephalitis subsequently, without rhinorrhea.

We report a patient with combined thrombophilia--protein C deficiency and mild hyperhomocysteinemia with total spontaneous thrombosis of a basilar tip aneurysm after subarachnoid hemorrhage, without neurological deficit. At admission, the patient had headache, drowsiness, and nausea, with no neurological deficit. Computed tomography (CT) did not show the presence of subarachnoid blood, and magnetic resonance examination revealed discrete remains of a subarachnoid hemorrhage in projections of temporal, frontal and occipital lobes, with no vascular abnormalities.

Introduction: Arachnoid cysts are congenital fluid-filled compartments within the cerebrospinal fluid cisterns and major cerebral fissure, between two layers of the arachnoid membrane. They can develop anywhere within the subarachnoid space, most frequently located within the Sylvian fissure in the middle fossa. In young patients with the arachnoid cyst and history of head trauma chronic subdural hematoma is present up to 4.

Introduction: Traumatic brain injuries have major socio-economic importance due to their frequency, high mortality and serious consequences. According to their nature the consequences of these injuries may be classified as neurological, psychiatric and esthetic. Various lesions of brain structures cause neurological consequences such as disturbance of motor functions, sensibility, coordination or involuntary movements, speech disturbances and other deviations, as well as epilepsy.

Unlabelled: To establish the possibilities of functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) in the assesment of preservation of the motor and speech brain functions in the primary brain tumour patients planed for neurosurgery.

Methods And Material: fMRI of motor and/or speech areas was performed on 3T MRI unit in 17 patients with primary brain tumours and dominant focal epileptic symptomatology.

Results: None of the patients demonstrated motor neurologic deficit before the operation, while in one patient a moderate speech disorder was noted.

Introduction: Brain concussion is a brain dysfunction without any macroscopic structural damage, caused by mechanical force. This research paper presents the occurrence and basic characteristics of patients with brain concussion without skull fracture. The second aim of this paper is to answer questions, related to this problem, neurosurgeons are most often asked by doctors of other specialties.

The paper reviews the results of a prospective study on external morphologic characteristics of communicating testicular hydrocele in boys, which might help the prognosis of future events in the peritoneal testicular covering. We examined 216 cases of communicating hydrocele and controlled their size and consistency every 3 months throughout the period of 15 months. It has been found that bigger hydroceles of about 3 x 3 cm which are always followed by the development of strained walls, remain in higher percentage unobliterated up to the 15th month of life, because of which an indication for surgical treatment is necessary (34.
